I cap from both ends toward the middle with the shingles turned away from the gables. That way water sheds away from the roof ends of the roof vent. At the gables, I lay a half starter with the sticky strip toward the outside and then nail the cut off aggregate half on top of it, dabbing the nail heads neatly with some roof cement sprinkled with loose aggregate to hide them. This eliminates the need to decide which is the windward gable. The middle gets another half shingle nailed, dabbed and sprinkled. It's a little extra work but it functions better so I put up with it.

Great question! wish i would have covered it in the vid. On the last shingle, after its nailed down. Trim so theres about a half to 3/4 of and inch hanging past the ridge vent. you can dab just a little roofing tar over the nail heads and call it finished or what I like to do is cut another shingle tab to fit over the exposed nail heads and then use the tar generously to attach that last shingle. It looks better and there are no exposed nail heads. Hope this helps. take care!

Starter cap is missing. This system of capping is a 4-ply system. The first cap on the house is only two ply. There should be a double half-cap(two caps together with their exposures cut off, leaving the adhesive intact, facing rakeside) installed first before you install your first course of cap. And, you should make sure that your final cap also has 4 plys as well.

I'm in Illinois and just had my roof replaced due to hail damage along with removal of the standard vents in favor of this ridge vent upgrade system and after looking at the design on a few you tube videos, I can honestly say I am regretting it now. With enough wind, rain and snow, this system appears to be able to allow for a high probability of moisture to enter the attic. Something I never seemed to have to worry about with tradional metal vents.

@kyleburgess15394 жыл бұрын
Great video. Do you lay the shingles the same way on the other end? As in the same direction with a starter cap on the gable end and lay them in towards the ridge vent? I would assume so, but would it give the roof an odd look with the shingles running in different directions? Maybe I am overthinking this. Are architectural ridge cap shingles installed essentially the same way? And can ridge vent be installed on the dimensional part of the shingle or do you have to ensure the ridge vent be installed on the flat upper side of the shingle? Thanks in advance.

I have a video just on that topic but I should be able to explain. You want to run your shingles up both sides of the roof all the way. place your ridgevent over the top. If your not covering the nail heads on the last shingle you nailed on then you will have to run another row of shingles.At the peak you will have unnecessary shingle material hanging over. you will need to trim all this back with a hook knife in the areas in which your gonna install ridgevent.

I had a roofer install a complete roof replacement with vented roof cap but the cap shingles didn't cover the vented cap. About 1 " of plastic vent is longer on both sides than the cap shingles. Is that going to be a issues as it ages, such as UV rays destroying the vent or linking?
@Josh-ww5kz3 жыл бұрын
The caps arent supposed to cover the entire ridge venting, should have about an inch or so from the edge all the way across the ridge. Just gives it more airflow. unless you can see nails or into your attic space when looking straight up and down through the venting, it shouldnt be a problem

I have a question/concern. Would water leak inside in a windy rainy day? Thanks in advance..
@minthillbilly6 жыл бұрын
Its possible under a severe rain storm but the modern ridgevent is designed to prevent that problem. The old aluminum vent they use to sell sometimes would get a little water past it. I've removed that style vent before and noticed some water damage at the peak.

Materials shouldn't be to much if your gonna do it yourself. 4 ft sections of ridgevent are approx. $7 each. A bundle of 3 tabs will cap about 33 ft. There are about $25 each. A capping shingle is a better choice and they run about $50 a bundle and usually cap about 20 ft depending on the brand. Yes you will have to cut the plywood back on each side of the ridgepoll to allow proper ventilation. The ridgevent should have info on it as to how far to cut out the ridge. Take care

just a comment on these plastic ridge vents. Some come lined with a plastic scrub pad looking thing. Which is GOOD if you live in an area like the northeast where stink bugs like to find a way to get into your hours. Without the plastic as a little barrier to keep the bugs out, but lets the air escape from your attic. I've seen the grills on some ridge vents with out the plastic scrub pad inside is filled with stink bugs that die there and no air can get out.

Never use Cobra Rolled Ridge Vent is doesn't ventilate properly and let's the rain come in. Use a externally baffled ridge vent always. Always run the ridge vent material to the end of the house even though you don't cut to the end. This makes it look like a chicken coop. Congrats though--he is the only roofer besides us to hand nail with LONG ROOFING NAILS. The longest gun roofing nails just do not cut the mustard.

Charles is telling you to use the product in the video, not the ineffective rolled venting. He is offering solid advice that is in line with what the video is saying. He is also clearly a roofer so these comments of him being a "Hater" or hiring "Inexperienced Roofers" make little sense. All up votes and no down votes attest to this. Jorge and Annunaki, you should delete your comments, they make you look like idiots.
@Hypercube96 жыл бұрын
100% agree Charles! The product he's nailing through in an inch thick, plus he's nailing through two top shingles, plus (in the case of my roof) I had another inch of shingles before I even got to the roof actual decking! And that deck wasn't even the highest quality anyway! So even using 3 inch roofing nails, I still had to come back and replace a couple with deck screws and some wood glue because they had pulled out overnight. However, +naccibobacci, you should know by now that the downvote button on KZbin doesn't work anymore. It actually hasn't worked in awhile, at least not for comments. You can upvote or downvote a video, but that is primarily how YT knows if you want to see more of something or not.

Actually if you read the manufacturer's warranty and installation information, it states that you should never nail on the tar line as the nail head prevents the tar from adhering to the shingle above it. Some manufacturers actually place a nail line on each shingle to eliminate confusion.
@Josh-ww5kz3 жыл бұрын
