Great video. Clear and concise. Now I can properly fix shingles that were "high nailed" by someone 20 years ago and have been periodically blowing off. Never heard that term before, but it's a perfect description.

A shingle all through the 80s and nineties and the contractors I worked for we had manufacturer reps inspect our work shingles are to be nailed below the tar line and a inch and a quarter from the butt joint... we used a 4 pattern and a 6 nail pattern in high-wind areas

Yeah I know most shingle manufacturers recommend a little below the tar line. In the real world when its hot on the roof and your using a nail gun I like the tar line because it helps to prevent the head of the nail going all the way through the shingle. Nailing on the tar line still catches the shingle below which is the most important part. We can agree to disagree on this but I've never had an issue installing shingles this way. Have a good day!

@@minthillbilly If you have your PSI on your air compressor at the about 25 over recommended PSI for shingles and have an inline gun regulator it reduces the over/under nailing alot... Have you tried this? Its an awesome addition to any air gun etc..

this is the first roofing video i have ever given a thumbs up. good job man! and if you nail below the tar line there will be trouble. nailing through the tar line is far enough away from the bottom of the shingle so that the capillary action of the water won't reach the nail and rust it out. nailing 1 inch above the key hole / slot is minimum. this is especially important on roofs where the slope is 4/12. steep roofs like 6/12 shed the water better and capillary action is reduced to less than a 1/4"

Thanks. I came here from another video that said to nail on the tar line, and I thought, "Huh? Why cover adhesive that's supposed to be adhering to the shingle on top?" I'm a total amateur, just trying to do a decent job The manufacturers association says differently, "For most shingles with sealant on the top surface, place nails below the sealant strip but above the area visibly exposed." (www.asphaltroofing.org/nail-application-asphalt-strip-shingles-new-and-recover-roofing). But you and bottmar1 make good points, and the This Old House videos and others are all nailing on the tar line (or doing a little of both). I guess it won't matter too much either way, except for less steep roofs which should be nailed on the tar line like you say.

Michael is absolutely correct! This will void most manufacturer's installation warranty. The nail should be placed in between the tar and the notch cut of the shingle.

I do butt them together but don't force them. Just lay the shingle in place and slide it up against the one nailed down. nail it on that end first to prevent the shingle from moving closer and binding. hope this helps

Hey. I just built a shed with a shingle roof. Didn’t know how to roof or didn’t even know there was a “nail placement” for that matter. But I nailed my nails 5/6 nails per shingle. 3 along the bottom(not nailing the shingle beneath it) and 2/3 on the top. I would repeat this with every shingle! Think it will be ok?? Thanks in advance

Welp I already started and I got one bundle and I nailed a little above the tar line… I have a big Tree in front of this area of the roof to block any high winds but would that part of the roof leak water? Should I just pull all those shingles off and take the L on the bundle and start all over?

This makes sense, having 2 rows of nails holding down each shingle. But I'm not sure if there are different heights, or not. On a 3 tab, when I align the leading edge (of the shingle being installed), to the very top of the 3 tab slot below, there isn't enff meat on the trailing edge of the lower shingle to capture it. The glue line ends up "right on" the edge of the lower shingle. I just did a couple shed roofs recently, (one gable, and one gambrel) and used architectural shingles for the 1st time. Had the same problem. Maybe I need to drop the shingle down to a 4" exposure, rather than 5"?

i bought a house 3 years ago. This week my roof started to leak like crazy. I can't find cracks to explain where the water is pouring in so I looked underneath the shingles and it is obvious that the contractor who did the roof did not watch your video. Every single shingle is nailed down the tar line a good 3/4 to 1/2 inch below. Could that explain the leaking? FYI, 4 weeks ago I finished applying one of those solar reflective white paints. Could that be the reason of the leaking instead of the nail position? Than k you very much for your video

I'm with Michael B. Check the manufacturers installation instructions and whether it be GAF, IKO, Certainteed, or another... they recommend the nail be placed below the tar line and above the cut out, or rain groove, to prevent blow off and maintain warranty.

Shingles should be nailed below the tar line, nailing on the tar line prevents the tab above from sticking or bonding properly. There's only one way to nial shingles,....following the package or manufacturer instructions. When people start saying we do it like this or like that is wrong.

if doing it this way voids your warranty, was it worth it?
@cup_and_cone

Manufacturers almost never stand by warranty because it's easy to get out of. I'd wager 95% of roofers don't follow every single manufacturer direction. When a manufacturer nrep points out an installation procedure that wasn't advised, they walk away and say it's the contractors problem. What's the likelihood then homeowner can huntdown and hold the contractor who did an install 10 years accountable?
@josephcaruso7815

how long is the nail? 1" long?
@MAGTRAIN
@MAGTRAIN 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Caruso most manufactures recommend 1.25" in length and 3/8" head. some manufactures don't say a specific length, but say that the nail should be 3/4" through the back side of the roof deck, so 1" nails aren't even long enough for a 3/8" plywood deck.

@le9186

I am not a roofer but it is just common sense! Nail where the tart line so the tart can wrap around the head od that nail, act as an sealant for nail hole, extra proof wattering and it can not be blowed off by strong wind so double benefitts: sealant and can hold up much better.

You people that think nailing on the tar line causes shingle blow should prove your point. Do that by describing WHY blow off would happen. And I mean exactly why. Is it the nail head that covers too much tar? Or the nail makes a depression so the above shingle can't reach the tar near the nail head? So far all I see are people that keep repeating statements as though they are experts. I have shingled for fifty years and have yet to see shingle blow off worsened by nailing on the tar line. The remaining tar is far more prevalent than the little bit covered by nail heads. The fact is nail heads that are too close the bottom edge it's overhead shingle is much more important to consider. If you nail below the tar line that damn nail head is too damn low especially on flatter roofs.

I'm no expert on shingles but the roofers make sense..The one guy said the warranty is fraudulent Those manufacturers want to sell you more shingles therefore of the warranty is not honored it seems to me the manufacturer would tell you the wrong way to nail it for repeat sales. That's just a theory.
