My biggest regret was learning that just because a book is listed as a key in Key Collector doesn’t mean you should buy it. A few years ago I had just downloaded the Key Collector app and I went to my LCS and was flipping through the back issue bins and noticed a full run of the 90s Robin miniseries. I checked Key Collector and it said issue #2 was a key, so I got excited and bought it for $5.00 without thinking about it. After I got home I quickly realized that I had no interest in the book and after looking at some recent sales data I realized that I’d be lucky to get a dollar for it if I sold it. Regardless, I listed on my eBay store and while I have sold many books since then, that book is the only one to never sell two years later. I know that this isn’t a large mistake financially and I only lost $5 but it taught me a lesson that would have cost me much more if I had learned it later.

I first really got into collecting / reading comics in 2014 with the reboot of ASM after Superior Spider-Man ended. In 2015, I sold my ASM #4 (1st Silk) 1:10 Incentive & Edge Of Spider-Verse #2 (1st Spider-Gwen)1st Print for $60 total. At the time, they were going for $50 each. They were both NM+ high grade candidates. They'll cost me at least $1500 to get them back now. Luckily, I kept the A Cover of ASM #4. It was one of the first books I got Graded in 2020 and it got a 9.8! 💯 😅 I still wish I had the other 2 though!

I think my biggest regret has been buying auctions while drinking. I don't do that anymore, but I usually have to offload many of my purchases immediately after buying them for a big loss with shipping. My other regret / mistake is buying stuff I don't love. Most of my regret is because of selling so many great comics on Ebay to try to pay off bills. When I collected, I truly was a mint hunter. I collected what I like and read everything, but tried to find the perfect copies and treated the comics like they were babies. I bought Hulk 181 for $35, when that was the Overstreet value. I eventually sold it for $500. This was way before grading and slabbing ever was even a thing. If I had held onto that comic and later sent to CGC, it would easily gotten a 9.8. There were so many books that I passed on because they showed some wear. Wish I still had my whole collection.

Biggest regret was a yard sale con. I had to work on a Saturday while my wife was having a garage sale. I had extras staged in the garage NOT for sale. My wife calls me and said that an insistent bully wanted some of those. She put him in the phone. I said I would be home in a few hours and for him to come back. He then hung up. She called back and said that she sold the books and has the money. I said “ WHAT!!!???”. The guy said that I said go ahead and buy some items. Most of the items were purchased 20-25 years ago and had the original prices on them. That’s what my wife charged. I remember my extra Star Wars 1, my extra Captain America 100 and numerous Xmen were missing when I got home. But I had $30! Always follow up with the wife and tell here what’s going on so a con man won’t jump ahead and take advantage.

Having been into reading and collecting comics for 30+ years, I’ve definitely spent some money I might as well have just struck a match to. I’m sure we all have or at least we all WILL if you’re in this hobby long enough. Instead of mentioning specific misses I’ve had (mostly regarding spec during the 2021 FOMO boom), I’ll simply say this: Trust your gut and your own experience, which is where I messed up. I had started trusting spec channels and influencers more than I trusted myself, which led to FOMO on top of FOMO. I’d spent 30 years collecting what I liked and done very well in regards to investing until that 1-2 year period where a lot of what I bought for spec/FOMO purposes fell flat. I still watch the spec channels daily to keep up with news, but now I view them for entertainment purposes only and not investment advice. 2021 was a brutal year for a lot of us buyers, but hopefully it was some hard lessons learned.

When bidding on some books on Ebay I've let it become personal - bidding more and more just to beat the other guy who I don't know and will very likely never meet. The high of winning lasted only seconds, until I realised that there were other copies of the same comic for 25% of what I paid, and in better condition. Lesson: bid with your head and never with your heart. James, the fact that you can admit to these past mistakes means that you've moved past them.

Everybody overpays for some things sometimes. The 2008 real estate debacle is a prime example of how tragic it could be. My biggest mistake was trusting people who stole from me. So many of my early Avengers and Fantastic Four are MIA. When I can replace any of those books, it gives me a good feeling. I try not to dwell on the past and concentrate on the present. If I were to give advice to my fellow hobbyist, it would be to avoid mystery boxes, exclusives, expensive variant covers, signed books, and the hot books of the week. As someone who had been out of comics for 20 years, only for my collection to be offered back to me plus a few thousand more comics right when the comic boom happened, I definitely made some mistakes. The car full we bought wasn’t the mistake. It was buying all this modern spec. Ironheart, Silk, etc etc. Pretty much every single modern key I lost money on. So… I started dumping em all. I let eBay auctions do their thing one at a time and just kept selling, and I’m glad I did, because they dropped even more. I made a sheet and decided I wanted to keep 50 TOTAL comics and may bring that down to 30. That philosophy has worked pretty well for me. Last month I tried selling a bunch of raw comics one at a time. I sold 78. I made enough to buy a ASM 6 graded. And to me that’s the trade off. Have 78 comics that are worth next to nothing each, or a big key that I’ll keep. Inching closer and closer to that goal of 30 keepers and not a single issue more and never again a modern book. The “key” is to not chase that modern garbage. It’s pretty much a no win gamble. So I wittle back down to 30 total and I’m a happier person for it.

My biggest comic book failure was when I first decided to get books slabed looked online and found a comic book, grading company, Wait for it…… PGX. I sent them my invaders 1. My wolverine 1 my Incredible Hulk 180 and 181 and was thrilled until I get the books back and start realizing that I may have made a mistake. I soon learned that PGX was not a company that people used and resubmit it the books to CGC. When the books came back, I was horrified to see an other than blue label. The invaders, and the two Incredible Hulk books with all missing the value stamp. This is when I learned that not only did I learn that PGX completely screwed up and missed that, but that the person I bought the book from took advantage of a novice comic book collector. By far my biggest mistake with collecting Comics.

I viewed some comments, and like a few, I regret letting go of my collection back in the mid 90's before the comic book grading/slabbing era. If professional grading/slabbing was available back then, I would have appreciated my valuable collection back then. I'll tell you why. When I started collecting, I loved visiting the local comic book shop which was the only one near Homestead Air Force Base in 1985, so the only time I would be able to visit was when my parents decided they wanted to purchase something from Cutler Ridge Mall or the Best Buy (brand new at the time). Usually, my allowance was about $10/month, so on one occasion, the owner recently came across a treasure trove of silver age X-Men that he had not been able to personally grade and price out yet, but were sitting on his counter in piles, just right by his cash register. I was 13 at the time, so I had to make a decision on the option the owner gave to me as to what I wanted to do with the $10. He told me I can take a pick of a pile of the silver age X-Men issues for $1 each (most were I would say Good to Fine condition) OR purchase issue #1 (He said was in rough shape, but still intact) for the whole $10. I figured, I would get more bang for the buck for the later issues at $1 a pop! I was happy with my decision at the time, but regretted it less than 10 years later. The next regrettable choice I made was to sell my collection of mostly Marvel collection of Silver/Bronze and Modern age so I could have extra spending money for a big trip overseas! Ugh! That was my big regret, but as for a new age of comic books, perhaps it can be coined the "Slab Age"! Again, I would have appreciated my collection more if I got them profesionally graded before I let it go!

when i got back into comics in early 22', I fomo bought copy 1st Jane Foster Thor in a 9.8. While I didnt pay the top end of that it was still $300. It promptly took a nose dive to $100 within months. Luckily it was only 1 copy, as I almost bought into multiples and the subsequent 2nd, 3rd and 4th prints! Also SHE-HULK #1 Newsstand in a 9.8, paid the top end on that one but saw the writing on the wall after the 1st episode aired and got out of it with a minimal loss. Moral of the story, dont FOMO buy and dont buy into the hype. Now I stick to solid proven keys and RAW's that I clean/press/submit myself.

The thing I regret buying most of all is a BMW. The thing was a total money pit. Never again.

My Top Failure was Selling my ASM 300 for a $100.00 back in 2008. Grrr!

My worst purchase is either a mid grade ASM 316 that I bought at the height of the 2021 hype for $250 or paying to see Thor Love and Thunder twice.

It is difficult to select one. I think I can say that my worst decision as a collector is to be a completionist... today I just want to complete arcs and first appearances of some group of heroes. that leaves me with tons of comics that take up space and make my girlfriend mad. Some time ago I bought Day of Vengeance 1 online, because it was the first appearance of shadowpack, then I realized that I bought the infinite crisis special... crap

About 20 years ago I bought several high-end, wood carved chess sets for display (and play). My comic book room took over the area and the expensive chess sets have been sitting in my closet for about 15 years. They are worth only half of what I paid, plus I haven't played a game of chess for about the same amount of time. I could have bought some pretty nice key comic books with that money 20 years ago.

My biggest failures were actually blue chip keys I bought at the start of last year: Strange Tales #110 and Fantastic Four #48. I bought these both already CGC graded, with a credit card, right before they dropped in value. I then needed the cash, sold them for way less than I paid to buy them, and still have a credit card to pay off. Really, really dumb.

So my local shop sold out of that 1st Virus book except for 1 cover: the "Wednesday is New Comics Day" text cover that was Marvel's response to DC going to Lunar. And yeah, I paid over cover price for it. Bad buy for sure.

Keeping my 70s & 80s comic collection in a ground floor storage unit. Real convenient until it flooded. Total loss.

My failures involve brilliant purchases, but terrible resales. I was going through some bad depression at the time and in about 2011 I sold Tales of Suspense 39 for £400. I paid that for it about 5 years prior, but my mind wasn't in a good place. Same happened with Fantastic Four 48, I bought one of the earliest CGC 8.0 of it for £330 and sold it for £250 in 2011. The other incident was I bought a Gem Mint CGC 10.0 of Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1 for £100. In 2011 I sold it on eBay for £100!!! Safe to say the guy I sold it to left me very positive feedback. If I could go back in time, I'd definitely change that. Been there on the speculation path too with Incredible Hulk 34 return of the monster. I paid Wizard guide price for that, only to then find it in bargain bins.

My pokemon cards. Back in college around 2001 I bought really expensive charizard cards in bullet proof glass and some mew cards that came out when the pokemon movie came out. I also had a complete set of first edition pokemon cards that were all nicely put away in a binder. After my first gf cheated and left me she took all my pokemon cards too and would not let me get them back. I try not to think of all that money I lost. Because of that experience to this day I do not like pokemon.

I live in Europe and the availability and market demand is a lot less than compared to America. Even though it will take years to eventually find a copy, somehow it pops up somewhere. So when I miss out on an issue or series, I remind myself of this fact and it has saved me a ton of money!

Back in the mid eighties I bought a Daredevil #1 for $20. I sold it to buy a set of The 'Nam, which was so hot then. But, I ended up buying a big collection of Playboys instead, so I guess that wasn't so bad. Still wish I kept it. I also sold a The Thing #15 before I fully knew what it was. Oh, well.

I think any collector can agree they spent too much on variant covers. Some that now they don't like and can't sell for 1/2 of what they paid for them. Now any variant I buy has to be special and I always think twice before buying it.

Great topic! I was able to resist Funko pops but I did got hooked on Funko Mystery minis. That line has been mostly phased out now though which makes me want to move on but I’ll probably take a big loss when I sell them. Btw ever read Marie Kondo’s graphic novel? I like her philosophy of being more positive when moving on from possessions we have outgrown. In terms of movies I actually flew to Korea to see Godzilla 2014 because it was delayed here and let’s just say I was less than impressed.

😂 Bro you are dead on about Suicide Squad. It was painful to sit through it was so bad. I’m sure you’re sleeve will be sick! My biggest comic/collecting related fails have to be the fomo hype and not sticking to purchasing solely what I enjoy. Awesome vid as always bro
