I loved this movie because Junior realized by the end of the movie that even though the world can be cruel, and that it can harden us to become cruel, some people come into our life and show us that we can be loved and are capable of being loveable despite how damaged we appear to others.

This movie meant a lot to me when I was little. I was adopted, and I look nothing like my parents. My parents only had two criteria for the child they wanted to adopt; black hair and dark eyes, either brown or 'black'. They wanted these traits to contrast the first child they adopted; my sister who is an aryan. The overarching theme of the movie is that the father character, Ben, goes out of his way to work with Junior to try and make a good life for the both of them. Ben wants to be a family man, and he wants Junior to have a happy, safe, and supportive home life. And even though Junior repeatedly acts out, Ben constantly plays a caring parent, forgives, and tries to put Junior onto a better life path; he does NOT take Junior back. When I was in elementary school, I often acted out, in part because other students bullied me for looking different from the rest of my family, using the fact that I was adopted to make fun of me. When my mother came to pick me up during an incident, one of the staff told her, "You know, it's not too late to take her back." My mother was so livid, when the year was over, I was taken out of the school, and enrolled in a different one on the other side of town. It was much farther away, but to her, it was worth it to not have to deal with staff who would say those things about her child.

By 1990, John Ritter was a very well-known actor ( certainly in the U.S.), so the hesitancy to cast him because of his supposed lack of fame doesn't really make sense. How could John Ritter be considered an unknown actor? He did 8 seasons of three's company along with films and movies since 1968. He did a ton of work before problem child was even considered.

The real problem child and bully was the Baseball Catcher. Damn that boy kept picking on Junior, and got the entire team to call him a Dork. The Catcher was the only one who really got under Juniors skin.

Well. Watch the movie again. He is not “crazy” he is a genius with a temper. He reacts to evil people around and give them hell. His father here serves as moral compass, trying to teach him that he doesn't need to be violent to solve his problems. But at the same time, his father is too lenient and lacks some courage to face oppression. At the end, they need each other to influence their behavior to some more refine character.

@Killowatt...no doubt! And watching him perform live was ridiculous! Seriously, Def Leppard is probably the best sounding live rock band I've ever seen.

Agreed, very inspirational! And on a side note, despite that toy drum set being fragile & hassle to put together, the sound they made was surprisingly good!

Before Problem Child John Ritter provided the voice of Peter Dickinson in Rankin/Bass' The Flight of Dragons (1982). Amy Yasbeck went on to star as Annie Young in Problem Child 2 (1991), Maid Marian in Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), Peggy Brandt in The Mask (1994) & Mina Seward in Mel Brooks' Dracula: Dead and Loving it (1995). Also, before Problem Child, Jack Warden starred as Doctor Ludwig Bessner in the movie Death on the Nile (1978), Mike Tarkenian, the News Editor in The Great Muppet Caper (1981) & The Owl in the second part of Alice in Wonderland (1985). Warden would go on to reprise his role as Big Ben Healey in Problem Child 2 & 3, although William Katt would replace John Ritter as Little Ben in Problem Child 3. Warden would also go on to play Old General Zevo in Toys (1992) and star as Armand McMillan in The Chairman of the Board (1998) alongside comedian Scott "Carrot Top" Thompson. Gilbert Gottfried would go on to reprise his role as Peabody in Problem Child 2 & 3, after which he would provide the voice of Iago the parrot in all 3 Aladdin movies and the animated series as well as the voice of Mister Mxyzptlk in two episode of Superman: The Animated Series (1990's). Prior to Problem Child, Michael Richards starred as Stanley Spadowski in UHF (1989) and would go on to star as Cosmo Kramer in Seinfeld (1989-1998).

I know he already has his brand set up but I'd like him to drop the "comedic arts" and come up with a better signature. Minty by itself is better in my opinion. I still call "The Report of the Week" Reviewbrah.
