The Thing and Big Trouble being flops at the box office proves one thing, the masses are asses. Carpenter was simply ahead if his time and the audience for these movies were just too young to go see them, when they came out on HBO and home video everyone I knew including myself were completely blown away with them and considered them to be instant classics.

This is one of my favorite movies. All of the cast were fabulous and fit their characters perfectly, it's completely unique, and just a fun ride from beginning to end. I always hoped there would be a sequel that perhaps dug deeper into the story because there was so much going on and a lot of it had the potential for some real depth.. between the clans that were fighting each other, the old guy who was obviously more than the junk dealer he was pretending to be, all of the creatures, and the elemental guardians.. just a ton of avenues to explore.

Definitely one of the best movies of all time, I can't get enough of this film. I could watch it over and over. It's true that Kurt Russell's character wasn't the hero at all, in fact, he did little to nothing in the film, he just fumbled around and got lucky except for the very end when he kills Lo-Pan - the ONLY good thing he did, which is what makes this film so awesome. It's his courage, that's what stands out, that's what they all admired, nothing fazed him (except maybe that floating head). This film has a charm that can never be replicated...I miss 80's film, really. Thanks for making a video on this one, Minty.

I've always thought the film's cold open scene to be one of the best cold opens in any film. It's quiet but you can feel the tension and the low lighting and camera angles only add to the feeling. Then, as the scene progresses and Egg uses magic, it lets you now that you are in for a strange and fantastic ride. And Victor Wong acted the hell out of that scene and I will never say no to more Victor Wong, may he rest in peace but live on in our memories.

IMO, a sequel to this movie would actually be pretty easy to do. In the first film it's established that Lo Pan must find a woman with green eyes and marry her in order to appease Ching Dai, the God of the East. However, in order to appease Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who cursed Lo Pan to begin with, he must then sacrifice her. In the first movie Lo Pan succeeded in marrying one of the two women he captured and regained his mortal form, but then he was killed by Jack Burton before he could complete the ceremony by sacrificing the other one. That should mean there is a very annoyed and potentially vengeful spirit of Qin Shi Huang out there. Fast forward to present day when Wang Chi and Miao Yin are married and have a daughter... with green eyes.. you can kind of see where this is going. Instead of going after Miao Yin for a second time, agents of Qin Shi Huang could go after their daughter. This is where Dwayne Johnson could play into the story, because he could just be another every man who works around Chinatown and ends up getting dragged into the conflict. I would maybe establish that Wang Chi still owns his restaurant and Dwayne Johnson's character enjoys eating there and occasionally flirts with the hostess who happens to be Wang Chi's daughter. Then she gets captured by Chinese demon sorcerers and off he goes to try and rescue her. Then of course you save Kurt Russell for the end of the film. Perhaps Jack Burton was also targeted and held captive by Qin Shi Huang and when they rescue him he helps them rescue Wang Chi's daughter. And she of course calls him "Uncle Jack" because he's practically family. I like this idea a lot more than simply rebooting a classic.

having Kurt Russell cast as the big hero was part of the humor... he talks like a big John Wayne action hero type but is so far out of his depth. I'm not surprised that this point of humor is lost on some... Having Egg talk defend Jack in the open sense made it even more funny., No, Big trouble was legitimately more funny that Golden Child.

Kurt Russell was of course the comic relief. Too bad the other guy didn't get equal bill though
@69mickswagg6 жыл бұрын
Sir Aaron Rowell Kurt was the main focus of the whole movie. He also stole every scene he was in. He narrates the movie, we follow him through most of the movie, and we end with him. The chinese guy could have been anyone with a little martial arts skill. But without kurt, this movie fails.
@electricdreams82376 жыл бұрын
Of course Kurt is crucial, but from objective dramatological standpoint Wang is the protagonist. There are plenty of movies where sidekicks are narrators and we follow them throughout the story (say Starwars, among others)
@Cmbtsnpr5 жыл бұрын
@@electricdreams8237 I disagree completely. The entire plot of the movie happens because Jack Burton shows up. Why can't he and Wang BOTH be protagonists. They go through the whole movie together, often side by side or at least in the same room. Wang may know what's going on a lot more than Jack does, but Jack still: -Goes into the White Tiger to find Miao Yin -Is the one to escape the wheelchair he's tied to. -Answers the call to action (Hero's Journey style) -Is the audience stand-in and has the most interactions with other characters -KILLS LO PAN Wang accomplishes a lot, too, being the one to kill 2 of the Storms, kick the most ass, and being the real reason Jack goes along with it all. As for Star Wars, what on earth do you mean? Of course Luke's the protagonist! Vader is HIS dad, R2 is HIS droid, HE answers the call to action, HE destroys the first death star, HE recieves Jedi training and the most meaningful arc.

The name's Express, Porkchop Express. One of the main reasons BTiLC is better than The Golden Child is that Russell's deadpan delivery of the 80's macho lines are believable, that he is a normal 80's guy experiencing some strange shit first hand. TGC on the other hand, is just Eddie Murphy phoning in a lackluster delivery of cliche' lines and is just cringe inducing on so many levels.
