When this was in the theaters, I was 12 and literally not only saw it *seventeen* times (I was a little obsessed at the time), but invited Robert Englund to my upcoming 13th birthday party -- and he actually wrote me a very kind handwritten letter back on yellow legal pad paper. He apologized for not being able to make it because he was working on the Freddy's Nightmares series at the time. It was more than I expected to get, to be honest. A gift by itself.

Soundtrack trivia.... When I was a kid, I often took a cassette audio recorder into theaters to record movies. Then I could listen to the movie while doing homework or traveling with my parents. I loved the songs from NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST 4, so I purchased the soundtrack on cassette. It included the song RIP HER TO SHREDS by BLONDIE. In the theatrical release, RIP HER TO SHREDS was playing when the one girl started lifting weights. I know because I had the audio from the theater. Unfortunately, home video releases don't have that song, but instead play a different song from the end credits. I'm sure money and licensing rights were a factor in the change. But it left many scratching their heads about why RIP HER TO SHREDS was on the soundtrack, but not home video releases.

We did that with movies on television! We had two tapes for Eddie and the Cruisers, one with the whole movie then one with just the music. We pretty much stopped that when we got a VCR. Never tried it in a theater though, not sure why I never thought of it, I was always into recording and archiving things. I grew up to be one of those people who sets up microphones at Grateful Dead concerts (among others) and recording them.

Just wanted to point out that the dog was named "Jason" in this movie and used fire, the element that Freddy is most afraid of to resurrect him. Freddy's second victim, Joey from Nightmare 3 was later drowned in his water bed. I find this to be a unique precursor to the eventual Freddy vs. Jason film where we see how both elements exploit their weaknesses.

Freddy 4 is my favorite in the series. Normally I don't like killing off established characters for the new; although my favorite movie of all time Transformers the Movie did exactly that. Such an interesting twist how the movie starts off with Kristen as the main focus character, continuing from #3 (but with Tuesday Knight as actress). Then 20 minutes later, she's killed off and Alice takes over as the new main character. So in this case, killing off the old characters really brought an amazing story and character arc for Alice.

I totally did not know some of these, great video! But, I always thought of Part 4 as the MTV Nightmare because MTV, prior to release, did an amazing special dedicated to NOES 4. Also, you missed Tuesday's song for Part 4. Unless I missed that somewhere... And, I disagree with the people against killing off Joey and Kincaid early. Think of it from Freddy's POV. He doesn't want to just be beaten again, and definitely doesn't want an ongoing struggle to enjoy terrorizing, tormenting, and reaping souls. Kincaid and Joey both think Freddy is toast, done, over... If one of them died, the other would know why. If other teens started dying off, they would know why. If two of the three Warriors were left alive, what would happen? They'd start seeking out any other teens who were in danger, or had managed to survive a single dream. And, Freddy doesn't actually prefer to kill them in the very first nightmare... he wants to make them scared beyond belief so they begin weakening and more. He needs the terror as well as the soul. If two of the three had lived... they'd start making an army, and training them to use their powers, as well as having them call Kristen in (as her power works both directions - proven by how Alice ended up in other people's dreams, not just others coming into hers). If they call on Kristen, then Kristen can call in everyone else: ARMY. The ONLY way Freddy has a shot at winning is to kill off 2 of the 3, and he has to do it on the exact same night. If he doesn't, odds are that the remaining two will do as above. He needs to kill off 2... but Joey's and Kincaid's powers don't have any shot at benefitting him. Kristen's DOES, and he knows this. Plus, Kristen actually expects Freddy at this point. The other two don't. That means he can easily go after them and remove them from the equation. The way it plays out is tactically the best option for Freddy. It isn't a weak point, bad decision, poor script, or anything else like that. It's the only winning play he had... he just didn't truly expect Alice. Her power, apparently, was a collector (being the Dream Master). Giving her Kristen's power in addition, allowed her to collect the powers of every victim that Freddy reaped THROUGH her, making it a tragic win-win situation for Alice, and an automatic catch-22 for Freddy.

A very enjoyable entry into the franchise. The 3rd best behind the original & part 3: Dreams Warriors... ( In my humble opinion...) & just ahead of the intriguing " New Nightmare"- 1994, some creepy moments with the wickedly dark humor/ one liners. By this time in 1988 Freddy ruled the pop culture world, @ the time unparalleled marketing give credit to New Line Cinema aka " The House that Freddy built!! ". A good watch from time to time. You can't have characters, in old slashers, that keep their stories going through 2-3 parts. The old characters have to die off in order to fully allow new characters to tell a new story. Joey and Kincade dying always made sense to me. It showed that you may win the battle but Freddy will win the war eventually. It was necessary to show that no one truly escapes Freddy. The actors should have felt fortunate to even be asked back for part 4 seeing as most side-characters never get that chance.
@Nightman221k

This movie is my favorite in the franchise. It's easily the most creative with the concept. I also really love Alice and her friend group, they're so much better than Nancy's group in the first movie (Why did Nancy waste her time with any of them?). Kristen being like a big sister figure to Alice was sweet. Rick is so attentive and caring to Alice and to Kristen made him feel like a great brother and boyfriend, so I felt sad that he died (and his death being the weakest effects-wise in the franchise is too bad since he's a great character). Debbie being a tough, badass girl with a heart of gold was endearing especially how she was best friends with Sheila, who was her opposite as a gentle, bookish girl. Seeing Alice get revenge for taking them was very cathartic and I like that she wore things her lost loved ones had in the final confrontation since Alice gained strength from them throughout the movie. I really liked Alice, her story about finding her power was well done. The director was definitely eccentric but I thought he did a fantastic job.

I watched this a few months back and enjoyed it more than I expected. The cockroach transformation / nightmare was actually really gross and quite creepy. I never thought much of this scene as a kid but for some reason seeing it older, I actually thought it was scarier now !! Also this soundtrack has some great htf rock gems .. "Back To The Wall" by Divinyls is an absolute banger and although "Nightmare" by Tuesday Knight isn't actually on the soundtrack it is such a guilty 80s pleasure.

This was not only the first Nightmare on Elm Street I ever saw, but one of the first three horror movies I ever watched (the others being Chopping Mall and Stuart Gordon's Dolls; at other friends' houses, of course - I was 10 at the time). Between this, a censored airing of Freddy's Revenge, and Freddy's Nightmares (both in syndication; both of which my parents actually let me watch) I was a fan - by age 11 I was trick-or-treating as Freddy himself.

Thanks for explaining #4 more, I must rematch these movies this month.

In Sweden during the 80's the government was waging a war against "Video violence" and often had movies undergo heavy editing before being released to the public. This movie is one of those that got it worst. It was so butchered by the board of censorship that they actually made cuts in the middle of dialogue. This butchering of movies gave a couple of writers the idea to make a Splatter comedy called "Evil Ed" (hilariously great no-budget movie with star-studded cast and extremely overexaggurated English dubbing) where Ed is one of the poor saps who has to sit through and cut horror movies. It is definitely worth a watch. 😁

First of all I want to say it's good to see another video of yours minty never get tired of yourself it gets me through the day and in the mornings secondly not going to lie I never thought about it of the movies could have been about time travel it's actually a pretty cool concept because some people actually they're right in theory maybe it is possible for us to actually time travel through certain points through the idea of sleep and dreams but I think of we were to do that we would first have to learn how to control whatever type of Dreams or nightmares will be actually end up having first and then eventually Maybe we can enter our memory banks and choose whatever Memories We Remember and don't remember maybe through their we would eventually be able to time to travel maybe not in the way of being ourselves in that memory like basically you seen Through The Eyes of ourselves at one point when we were younger but being an adult looking at ourselves go through that situation that we remember I don't know it's actually an interesting thought is all I'm trying to say

I love this underrated movie! One of the best out of the franchise hands down. I remember watching in Times Square in an old theater like the porn theaters they had in the same area and I felt like was in the movie, especially the scene when Alice is in a dream when she's in a theater. The floors in the theater were sticky and the theater was falling apart, which made the experience amazing lol. I similar experiences when I watched 976-Evil, Nightbreed and Hellraiser, just to name a few. Maybe it's just nostalgia idk, but I rewatched this movie quite a few times. When Freddy says " Welcome to Wonderland Alice!", for whatever reason I always get goosebumps. One of my favorite Freddy quotes ever!
