Culkin was GENIUS casting. This is supposed to be a psychopath who charms everyone around him by playing the "good son," despite being rotten on the inside--so what better actor to use than a beloved child star? Especially one who had gotten us to root for him in a comedy where he burns and stabs people? Mac's fame for being the adorable little scamp makes it believable that only Elijah Wood knows the real "him" behind the blonde boyish facade. The movie doesn't need to spend time making us believe that Culkin's character can get away with murder, and can then focus more time on how creepy Culkin can be when no one is watching. Oooh, sinister!

I sort of agree about Elija's character acting like an older person, but let's look at the fact he lost his mother that he loved. It's the type of thing that would change the behavior of a child. I'm using that as a reason he doesn't act like the child that he is.
@amiejohnston2842

My mother died when I was 12 in a traumatic fashion that I witnessed firsthand. I can assure you Elijah Wood's acting and mannerisms are spot on. You're forced to grow up literally overnight. Notice how during the scenes of the funeral it's Elijah basically by himself surrounded by adults who all of course care for him, but aren't really all that concerned about him. That's 100% what my experience was. Similar to the movie, my father had to leave town right after my mother died but he took me with him. Mark (Elijah) is simply going through the motions of life and hasn't had a chance to grieve because not only has his life changed forever but now he's dealing with a psychotic cousin. Oh to be the therapist that has to work with Mark after this gauntlet of catastrophic events haha. Sorry for the long reply, but you're all correct in your thoughts on why his character was acting older. I saw this movie about 3 years before my mom died and have always identified with Mark in how he dealt or rather didn't deal with grief after such a horrible life event of losing his mother.

Absolutely. A real life example: When Princess Alix of Hesse was six years old, in 1878, her mother and younger sister died of diphtheria within less than a month of each other. The trauma completely changed her personality, she became introverted, melancholy and serious, and even though those traits were idealised in the Victorian era, hers were seen as excessive. She would only ever go back to being extroverted, chatty and smiling when around her closest family and friends.

Totally disagree about the Mark character. He was supposed to be overly serious & mature. That gave Henry the leverage to try and blame everything on Mark. Henry was just a “normal kid” being naughty while Mark was a little adult. Also, I’m a teacher and I assure you...there are LOTS of kids who act like 40 year olds. Idk why adults think all kids are fun loving and inarticulate. That’s a myth.

We went to school with a kid who was just like McCauley's character who displayed these same sociopathic tendencies. While watching the "Highway Henry" scene we both looked at each other because the kid we knew had talked about wanting to do that. As the film went on and on the similarities where astonishing. A few weeks later we got word the kid had been sent to a group home for displaying all this same behavior from The Good Son. If you have kids, be very in tune with their mental well being. Last we heard the guy is 45 years old now and his been incarcerated for 20 years for manslaughter.

He shot a squirrel, gutted it out and grilled it on the family bbq grill while manically laughing at us. My buddy went home and told his Mom what happened. I didn't say anything to my parents, I figured this was what kids did around these hick towns for kicks, I was new to the area. Another time on a hot summer day, we decided to walk to the super market, the asphalt was hot and I could feel it cooking through my chuck taylor converse hi tops. The same crazy kids house was on the way. He saw us and said he wanted to say sorry for the last incident and asked us in his side yard for a cold beer (shouldn't of been drinking at 16). But I had one anyway. It cooled me off instantly. He asked "What to see something cool?". Before we could answer he dug up a shoebox of the dirt. He opened it up and it was a dead bird. Smelled awful. He danced around with it like it was a prize trophy or something. After that I always took the long way to school and back. Was mortified.

I wasn’t aware of the movie until I was 13 looking up Macaulay Culkin’s IMDb page and it came on tv shortly after I read about it, even though I was 6 when it was released, I don’t remember any news articles, reports or anything like that at the time surrounding Culkin playing such a dark role as a child actor.

I first saw this movie when I was 8. I had seen a lot of Macauley Culkin movies so I assumed that this one was no different from his others or that he'd be the protagonist but boy was I wrong. I had been watching horror movies since I was like 3 or 4 years old so it didn't disturb me but it definitely showed me a different side of Culkin and how far his acting talents could go. Now I like to tell my friends about this movie and blow their minds lol

I don't know why people didn't like this film. I saw it back then and I liked it. I was about 12 or so at the time. I was also a fangirl of Elijah Woods and liked seeing an evil Culkin. lol I also didn't have an issue with Woods' character since he was depressed and down after his mother's death, so I can see him acting really serious because of that.

@@tomunderhill8037 I absolutely agree, though I wonder if Minty has a certain time frame in mind when it comes to his reviews... as most of his uploads are in films from the mid to late 80s and all throughout the 90s... and if memory serves, Party Monster was released in 2003 or 2004. Regardless, I think it would make for a great video. Anyone who’s a fan of Party Monster really should check out the documentary or the “Shockumentary” as it’s called, that came out in 1999. The theatrical film was based off of a combination of it and James St James’ book Disco Bloodbath. But for anyone not too familiar with the story behind the Club Kids, the documentary goes a bit deeper than the movie, and it’ll really give you an appreciation for the choice in casting for the film. Culkin and Green nailed their roles in everything - from their looks and mannerisms, down to their vocabulary. Even the actor who played Angel looks like the real dudes freakin’ twin. Definitely worth checking out if you liked the movie.

I absolutely love your videos and it's so awesome that you have your very own action figure. 😎 The movie "The good son" is loosely based on the movie "The bad seed" First filmed in black and white then remade in colour but it that was about an evil little girl. Plus Macaulay Culkin's real life sister "Quinn Culkin" played his sister in "The good son"..... another one of Kit Culkin's demands. 😕 Kit Culkin worked his son almost to death with movie after movie, that's why Macaulay's last movie was "Richie Rich" He retired because he was completely burnt out from working all the time and really needed a break. Unfortunately it's an all too common thing with child actors 😞

I still remember my mother buying the VHS release with the first type of image on the cover. She also thought that it might have been another Culkin's comedy movie given his mischievous look on the cover. Although being 8/9 years old at the time, I was really impressed with Culkin's skills as an actor, changing from a comedy style to a more somber and chilling one and really liked Wood's performance as well. I cannot say that I watched it often as other movies during my childhood but when I wanted a more 'serious' movie that was my choice. A very good movie overall. Thank you very much Minty! I loved this movie as a kid, it's really good, I actually like it more than Home Alone 1 & 2 honestly, I feel that Macauley Culkin was better in this role than the two Home Alone films. Also even as a kid I honestly thought it was Home Alone 3 in a way as between 1 & 2 Kevin Macalister got more violent, granted he was defending himself but in part 2, he cold have gone to cops, and yes he was in his ow trouble to, but still. The Good Song to me felt like thee final act of Kevin Macalister, even though thee two films were not related to me it felt that way. Anyways the movie is brilliant, the idea was a good one, bother Macauley Culkin and Elijah Wood killed it in their roles, that was one heck of a movie.
