I see a lot of people in the comments here asking for premade versions of this project. They either seem to be lazy or scared to do it themselves. I just want to let you guys know that I built my own Raspberry Pi portable game console without following a guide or with pre selected parts. When I started this project, I had no idea how to even solder wire or anything really about electical components as I am a programmer and not an electrician. It was a learning experience for sure but I can tell you that the Minty Pi is practically a cake walk to assemble compared to my attempt. The hard work is already done for you. I would say there is honestly no reason to be scared of buying the components and building it yourself. I'm gunna risk sounding like an asshole, but there really is no excuse. I encourage everyone to do it themselves :)

Yeah. I agree. People should make this by themselves, it's a good thing, you gain experience and get skills on how to do this sort of stuff. IMO it's more fun too.
@mike-10617 жыл бұрын
So if I buy all the altoids tins and a lot of these kits, then I could sell them for $100? Would that be worth it?
@thecringegolfer7 жыл бұрын
Yep, that is the whole point of the pi, is to learn how to do this themselves. Otherwise, you could just go buy an android tablet for $47. And then download an emulator app to play the retro games on it.

I have 3 recommendations: 1: Make it have a sensor in the lid(like a button at the end of the thing that holds it open) so if you close the lid the raspberry Pi goes into standby mode when you close the lid. 2. Remove the power switch and make a power button. 3. Make it so that it outputs power if you connect a USB OTG cable by connecting the gate pin of a transistor to the 5th pin of the USB port, the emitter to the 5 volt pin and the collector to the output of the charger circuit so that you can use it as a power bank.

What does the total cost for this thing?
@jamesreulandwpscorpionwind83587 жыл бұрын
Gabe7939 dude that's lit! A gaming devices that cost that will sell so well. I'll have to go back and see how the games work with this because I may just have to get one of these.
@MegiddoTheImmaculate7 жыл бұрын
WP ScorpionWind the Pi Zero handles 2D gaming pretty well. SNES is probably the limit of good emulation but I haven't really tried anything past that.
@jamesreulandwpscorpionwind83587 жыл бұрын
Malachi Megiddo So what do you mean exactly by the SNES? As far as I'm aware of is Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Are you talking about games from there back? Then what about something like old school Pokemon games like green, red, blue, emerald, sapphire, ruby, the old school GBA's? I've not actually had the time to sit down and really get nose deep into how this is completely done so I don't really know how the games are installed, whether it's install in SD card, or do we use chips?
@MegiddoTheImmaculate7 жыл бұрын
WP ScorpionWind Yeah Super Nintendo. Gameboy emulation works pretty well too. All your ROMs will go on the SD card. There are a couple of methods to do that but it's well documented on the Retropie site. I had little experience with Raspberry Pi last year and wermy has great forums with a lot of information.
@jamesreulandwpscorpionwind83587 жыл бұрын
Malachi Megiddo hmmm... Good to know. I've been thinking about getting into Raspberry for a while but just haven't really gotten movin. Might have to after I try this and see how well it works once you release the final design and parts listings.

Could you post the CAD files for 3D printing? If you can, it would be greatly appreciated!
@maul4857 жыл бұрын
Seconded; I vaguely remember him saying he would. It kinda makes sense why he might not; to make more money by selling them himself. But it would also makes sense if he would provide the files; not everyone has a 3d printer/is near someplace that 3d prints, and printing online is still costly as is, so he'd still make money for selling the prints himself despite providing the files for those whom can use them. Besides; even those who print the parts themselves are still highly likely to buy the electronics from him :P

I would really enjoy one of these very unique game portables. I am aware of 3D printing and have in fact took classes. It can be pretty tricky and take a while to print out custom pieces. I would pre order and assemble this myself, yet I am worried that I might mess up. Are these for sale? Would you be willing to sell an already assembled minty pi with roms installed? If not then that is OK, but I am just wondering if you could sell one of these that is already assembled with roms. And what would the price be?

This is a really neat project, and I love it. The concern I mainly have, however, is about the L and R buttons on the back. Are they comfortable to use? Is there a way to possibly make them more like shoulder buttons, maybe extending the sides to make them more rectangular in shape? I would be completely happy with using them if they felt natural enough to use, but I think they look a little weird, with them supposed to be shoulder buttons and all.
