@@tylerevansfoothill Spray paint cans work just fine - do it with a few thin coats letting it properly dry in between so it doesn’t leave thick runs on the inside (even if it does, you won’t see that on the outside unless you’re using a paint with pearl or flake in it). The nice part is it can’t be scratched off from the outside. You can scratch the case, of course, but the color is still there.

It is slightly sticky for the component until the hot air can start to melt the solder which heats faster because its not stuck to the pad already... paste is a game changer and very easy to use. If you learn to apply the right quantity of paste for the pad and pin size then you can even be sloppy with application and most the time it will perfectly align with the pads when the paste flows.

It has been a while since I modified an iPod, but I believe places sell (or sold) thicker backs specifically designed for the large battery mods. Also, one reason why I went with an older iPod in the first place was actually that it lacked Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I wanted a device for music at work and I wasn't allowed to have anything with wireless connectivity. The older iPods worked great for that... after swapping the hard drive. The one thing that I wish I could change? Better software for the iPod. I'm pretty sure I looked at RockBox, but I can't remember why I didn't use it in the end. I do recall that my main complaint was the difference between album handling between the iPod and iOS. I think it has to do with there being two Artist tags used for music files where one is more geared toward specifics for a song (e.g., listing a featured artist) and the other is the generic artist (i.e., whose album it is). If I recall, the iPod has no support for the latter, which meant that it kept separating anything with "Artist ft. Other Artist" as separate from "Artist".

I have a 160 GB (6th gen?) iPod classic I bought new back in January 2013. Still in working order, with the original battery, with no visible leaking or swelling. Not yet, anyway. Haven't gotten around to modding it and the only changes I'm comfortable to safely attempt are a battery replacement and switching the HDD for an SD or microSD adapter board. I have installed rockbox on it. In fact, you should be able to dual boot rockbox and the native iPod OS on several iPod models, and switch between them by keeping certain buttons pressed during the startup of the device. I decided to keep both because the original iPod OS has a simpler, cleaner, smoother interface, but rockbox was the only way I could find to bypass the loud volume limitation enforced on iPods sold in the EU at the time. I could replace the circuit board with one harvested from an iPod made for the US (or at least non EU) market but I want to keep as much of it original as possible. Alternatively, according to some google searches, I could replace certain chips on the circuit board with ones harvested from non EU boards, but I lack both the hardware and the skill to perform such a feat at this time.
@thatguy6214Ай бұрын
Why would you do all that when you can just buy a cheap mp3 player. Even then I don't get the point of any of this when Spotify exists. It's so cheap it's basically free and I get a way better OS for my music. And it's already with me. Tell me your nerd that doesn't get laid without telling me.

@@thatguy6214 Short answer would be nostalgia. Long answer... I had several Sony mp3 players and iPods growing up in the 2000s. The 160GB iPod classic was the last dedicated music player I purchased. It's a solid and good sounding device, still working in its original state almost 12 years later. I won't bother with current cheap mp3 players which don't sound as good and most likely won't even last half as long. I switched to streaming in 2015 with Apple music because it was the first service to become available in my country. Then around 2018 I switched to Spotify and Tidal and still use both to this day. I'm not keeping the iPod alive to be my main music player. It's a hobby. I do it because I feel it would be a shame to let it die. It keeps me connected to simpler times, and it brings back good memories the handful of times every year when I pull it out of the drawer to listen to a few songs.

Wonderful soldering job. Wish I had the chance to do this kind of soldering at work, but they have me doing stupid easy stuff.

This is super cool. USB C is a great mod. You have me wanting to dust off my old iPods, but that level of soldering is beyond me. I thought I was a tech genius replacing the battery and putting Rockbox on one yaers ago. I wanted to upgrade to solid state storage but then the smartphone took over. There are themes for Rockbox that make it look much nicer and easier to use

Very interesting, when I first saw this video I thought "man I would love to do everything here if only iTunes wasn't such a hassle" but then you showed the alternative OS and that speech on music freedom. I agree with everything and congratulate you for inspiring me and other people to do the same

Replacing the nostalgic cold feeling of the stainless steel back and adding the bluetooth in my opinion is a crime to the essence of these childhood gems. It feels wrong. I'm also against the transparent everything trend going on but oh well. Completely changing the premium feeling of cold solid steel is the biggest one.

Nah, steel enclosures look good only at first. Then it turns into a mosaic of scratches and dents pretty quickly. Especially on a device that will be your pocket. It's the same as with piano black finishes. Looks good in promo photos, but turns to crap the instant you turn your back.

@AmartharDrakestone there are etching chemicals to add a frosted finish to metals, you can laminate the housing to keep the durability of stainless steel while avoiding permanent scratches, some people appreciate the patina/scratches/wear and tear that occurs naturally. Or, and hear me out on this one, you take good care of things that you want to keep! Especially something that reminds you of good memories.

Nice work. I'm surprised you found assemblies (screen) that fit and connected like the original. I wish we could find more assemblies like this for other devices.

I love how I've been considering purchasing an mp3 player, then I get recommended TONS of ipod modding videos. Just picked up a ipod 5.5th gen, an iflash quad, a 3000mah slim battery and 2x 256gb sd cards :D

@ZacBuilds when you want clear parts, you can use toothpaste to polish the small scratches on plastics and some resins because toothpaste is: 1. Easy to wipe off, 2. Smells good, 3. Slightly abrasive, and 4. Great for polishing!!

Definitely recommend, if youre using hot air, to do that BEFORE installing the usbc connector. its super easy to melt the plastic otherwise
