i found this on my history and decided to watch again and when i saw the unicorns that where raising the moon on the floor i remembered that the recent episode "Horse Play" said something about it being VERY hard to do and sometimes almost fatal... i found the fact that you got that even before that episode released very interesting!

fun fact, from memory about the spell I think it was actually implied that it took more than 6 (I think around anywhere from 6 - 12) but it also was said to drain there magic completely and in some rare cases make it to where they couldn't cast spells again. Only starswirl was able to cast it on his own before that and that had him bedridden for quite a while (not sure how long or if mentioned from memory) so the fact she can do that on a daily basis and NOT have her magic zapped away and STILL cast other spells is the most amazing thing about her power. (ps Luna best princess :) )

When luna gets her cutie mark/learns to raise it, it was because they literally ran out of enough unicorns capable of doing it (they didnt die, they just lost magical capabilities. Luna restored them after she learns to control the moon)

if we imagine this as an alternate timeline, than the creation of NightMare Moon can been seen very differently. because starswirl always helped her raise the moon, Luna wanted the night to stay as long as possible, because the moon reminded her of him. that's when she began to notice how no one appreciated it, and since no one appreciated the moon, she saw that no one appreciated starswirl. EDIT: since this is literally the most likes i've ever gotten, i wanted to expand on this a little more. when Luna is mourning StarSwirl, that's when you see Nightmare Moon pop out. She misses him, and she learnt to raise the Moon with his help. so naturally, she makes a connection between him and the moon. with him gone, she feels that the Moon is one of the last pieces of him she has left, and she wants it to stay as long as possible. when everyone sleeps through the Night, and Celestia keeps insisting she lower the moon, Luna get angry. She feels like lowering the Moon is letting a little bit more of Starswirls memory slip away. As time goes on, and she sees no one - not even her sister - appreciate the Moon, she sees that as them not appreciating or even remembering Starswirl. this anger overtook her, and she decided to never lower the moon, to try and make others remember Starswirl. when she returns to Eqestria after being banished, she goes to the castle where he passed away, and where Nightmare Moon arose. here, she finds the Bell that she cast her first successful spell on, the bell StarSwirl used to help her gain control of her magic. Luna lets go of her grief and her Anger, and just breathes. and Luna decides to lower the Moon

Whoever did this was trying to destroy Equestria believing if the sisters killed one another then Equestria would soon fall. This enemy did not understand love though as instead of killing Luna, Celestia chose to banish her instead as a show of mercy.

@clearly Joiful I agree that this is how the show presented it, I just look a lot deeper and see the potential of what might be if the writers were more in depth about it. To me Equestria has been under multiple assaults since its inception. Each one designed to take away the harmony that rid Equestria of the Windigos. In my mind there is a Darkseid type mastermind that feeds off the negative energy of that world and Equestria through the bonds of friendship threatens his/her power. In the case of Luna, sending a subtle mental message heightening jealousy. She can hold court on the plane of dreams through her magic having love and appreciation anytime she wants. She could very likely raise bits for the royal treasury from ponies just to have active time on the dream plane with her. Who doesn't wish we could consciously influence our dreams?

I like to think this was Luna's first time raising the moon since her banishment. The flashback of her being unable to due to Starswirls passing implies she became corrupt sometime soon after, possibly the last time she ever raised the moon was before his passing. Now she's returned to a world where he is still gone, and despite her fears of becoming Nightmare Moon, she continues to raise the moon for him and everyone else

This was actually shown at one of the panels at Nightmare Nights just a few hours before the Season finale. It was my first con, and I was lucky enough to be there for both. :) While the character movement feels stilted, and things like mouth movement and contact between characters looks rather weird, the animation as a whole is very beautiful (the backgrounds most of all), and fits very well with the music. I am forever a fan of MelodicPony's music, and Luna's Determination was an excellent choice to animate.

MelodicPony would be proud that his music was played in such a beautiful way. I am glad that you kept the story hinting how Starswirl helped her at first with the moon and stars, and kept just that part. There have been many other stories about how Luna became Nightmare Moon, and I'm actually glad this one didn't focus completely on that. After Starswirl's passing she lost who connected her to her moon and stars, and didn't have anyone that understood her as much.

I can imagine exactly how you must feel about the season finale which just aired, invalidating so many people's interpretations about the ancient past.
