"Working the bolt is pretty sloppy and grindy" about that statement I would like to say that I have handled some pre war Carcanos that have tighter tolerances than mausers and have very smooth bolts. The reason some don't operate so smoothly is because they were refurbed during or after the war so some parts got mismatched or replaced with war time more rough parts that didn't have the same tolerances. Also war time examples can be pretty rough but hey you don't have time to make rifles pretty while there is a war going on. In your case your rifle is a pre war example that got refurbed.

These are one of the most under-rated rifles from WWI. While they are rough when it comes to working the action, and the trigger is nothing to write home about, they can be surprisingly accurate. Especially when loaded with the proper 0.268" bullets, as opposed to the more common 0.264" bullets normally associated with 6.5mm cartridges. Be warned, however. Most of the current load data is developed for the 0.264" bullets. If you try to use that data with a 0.268" bullet, you will blow the case head into the bolt face, and it will require tools to remove it. Assuming you don't damage the gun.
@paulll47 Жыл бұрын
The action is also not that hard to fix, knew a guy that made some work on his Carcano and the action was extremely smooth afterward, said he only used some sandpaper for it.

I still love the "Kuh-CAR-no" pronunciation. For those who don't obsess over linguistics the way I do, this process is known as metathesis (does this read condescending? I'm not trying to be.). It is the process where a speaker in anticipating a particular phoneme [unit of sound in linguistics], ends up switching them around within the word. Another great example is the AAVE word "Aks/ax" as in "I axed him a question". "car-CAW-know" would be closer to the original Italian pronunciation. But I digress.

@C&Rsanal (or anyone else that knows) Is it just me or did the ATF just redefine what an antique gun is? I had always heard and was always of the belief that if a gun was a muzzleloader, cap and ball revolver or if a gun was made before 1898 (and is not a machine gun) it was considered an antique and NFA rules don't apply. For instance if you bought an 1873 trapdoor in 45-70 it usually gets shipped straight to your door. However when I looked this up on the ATFs website today this is what I found. Firearms Verification National Firearms Act Definitions Antique Firearm 26 U.S.C. § 5845(G) "For the purposes of the National Firearms Act, the term “Antique Firearms” means any firearm *NOT INTENDED OR REDESIGNED FOR USING RIM FIRE OR CONVENTIONAL CENTER FIRE IGNITION WITH FIXED AMMUNITION AND MANUFACTURED IN OR BEFORE 1898* (including any matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap or similar type of ignition system or replica thereof, whether actually manufactured before or after the year 1898) and also any firearm using fixed ammunition manufactured in or before 1898, for which ammunition is no longer manufactured in the United States and is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade." So does this mean that since my 159 year old 1862 S&W Model 1 is chambered in 22 short and 22 short is still manufactured in the U.S and is available on the consumer market it's now considered a modern Firearm and is no longer an antique?
@mfree802863 жыл бұрын
Definition (g) only applies within 26usc53 (NFA) and is used only in section 5845a where it says that the (g) "antique firearm" is NOT a firearm, unless it's a machine gun or destructive device. Context is important. Literally. EDIT: Since there still may be some confusion: You aren't reading the definition for 'antique firearm" in the correct chapter. This ONLY applies to items under the NFA. You're looking for GCA, 18 U.S.C., § 921(A)(16), which is: "A. Any firearm (including any firearm with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap, or similar type of ignition system) manufactured in or before 1898; " In legalese you can knock an inclusive statement out if it does not apply to your consideration, so: Antique Firearm == "A. Any firearm (...) manufactured in or before 1898" , in the chapter where "regular gun" paperwork and controls are laid out.
