Chemical dipping a 1971 Dodge Charger to remove all the paint and rust before the restoration

I will be removing all the paint and rust off of this 1971 dodge charger. With this video I went into a little more detail and explained things a little more. This was actually going to be my fist KZbin video. This car was finished over the summer and I just got around to editing the video all together. Let me know what you all think about this sty of video compared to the shorter versions I’ve been posting. Do you guys like me going over the cars a little more between steps?
This was also one of the hardest paints I’ve had to remove. This was a stubborn car!

Had a 73, loved that damned car to death. Was my first car I bought it at 16 in high school, drove the hell out of it til I graduated. When I was getting ready to leave for the Air Force I sold it. 23 years later, I retired and found the car but couldn't buy it back. Would love to hear that giant 440 screaming again. Loving your vid, wishing I still had mine.

My first real “hot rod” was a 71 charger. I got it when I was 14 & the bodywork took 1/2 of a school year before it was ready for paint. Originally had a 318 & an automatic, but I switched it to a 440 & a 4 speed. God, I loved that car, but it was huge.

knowing the paint & clear coat on some cars is likely to be a problem, do you ever run over it with a sander & say, 120 grit paper for 20 mins or to open up the paint surface and thereafter allow the first dip to do more? Just curious 🙂

I was wondering how you flush out the hidden areas, such as rockers, door hinge reinforcement areas, etc after each dip. If I could be sure of getting all the chemicals out of these areas and others, such as the pinch welds, I would love to try this on my next build. Thanks for best video/explanation I've ever seen on how this process works!

Problem I’ve heard is that down the road, it leaches between the seams and pinch welds. Causes it to blister and swell. It’s why I avoided it on my 71 Charger I’m doing on my channel. I know there is a place that does dip it in primer after. That MAY be better. But it wasn’t anywhere near me. So I went with blasting.
@Neo1969
@Neo1969 Жыл бұрын
@@drifter9425 You are correct. You can never get all of the acid removed from the seams of the car after the dipping process. Have witnessed firsthand this issue on many cars after a few years being restored. The acid will seep out and literally turns the paint to a brownish gold color wherever the acid seeps out from.
@Neo1969
@Neo1969 Жыл бұрын
@@VicsGarage71 It does leach out after a little while. Seen this happen on many cars personally. I personally would never dip a car unless I planned on taking the body all apart at the factory seams.

Man I would have replaced floor and fixed frame with body off and leave body as is and just sand the body rust and fix the rust holes with new sheet metal then paint my patched metal areas with primer base clear and sand down and make a rustic beautiful looking barn find type paint job that looks rough but it's solid and not really rough just looks it but I know this is a 71 and needed a chemical bath bad. I built my own chemical bath as well for doing racecar chassis for asphalt oval and dirt I dip the whole chassis then paint them fresh for each race season for the dirt latemodel and every two seasons for the asphalt pro truck and modified and I used it to take a 1992 left hander Camaro stub latemodel chassis that is out dated and good for outlaw latemodel stock class and it was surface rust and when I was done the frame looked like it was brand new with fresh coat of powder coat it's beautiful car now. The acid doesn't really attach steel, only rust and paint. You can use regular vinegar or "cleaning" vinegar, which is double the strength, for washing rust off of rusty steel. Works awesome. If your steel has paint on it, use an aircraft stripper first, then the vinegar for the rust.
