11 hours? If I had been her assistant, I would've looked in on her every half hour to do a "bed check" if I was on duty. I know those are a lot of "if's." (My non-smoking non-drug using mother had two heart attacks after menopause. Nausea was the symptom with a vomiting, but she was awake. Even catching the heart attack and getting a bypass doesn't mitigate the damage to the heart muscle from an attack. It just bought her a few more years, but not many. I am now 60 and post menopausal, so I think about the difference in the symptoms of women's heart attacks.)

I feel ashamed of myself for laying any shame on the assistant. I heard Joely Fisher saying that she has the dog, Gary or Garry, in her care, so I don't think anyone is blaming her. I was responding to the biopic tv saying a doctor said it was a red flag for her to be asleep so long on the flight. Also, I have worked in residential facilities where I check on breathing and position of the sleeping residents every half hour even if there is nothing happening. This is not the same as a personal assistant because we work covering all hours on shifts and do not sleep then.

I read somewhere that Carrie Fisher at one point actually said "I can't breathe" before being unresponsive. I'm not sure how accurate that is. I believe it's from a book I'm currently reading about her.

@@dec23 A biography by Sheila Weller? Carrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge That book? Did that say so? It is by a journalist with a lot of footnote/endnotes to cite sources. When it takes license, I think the writer says as much. So, she was able to come to. Woa. My weird sensibility highlights that her death was in public, an irony, and that she was airborne which is closer to her Star Wars pithy statement of "Let it be reported that she died in moonlight, strangled by her own bra." I have the Shockaholic audiobook that I am just beginning. Her body had to go through sedation for those treatments too. She endured a lot.

@@Ma_Ba Yes, it's that book! Life on the Edge. I feel bad reading it because her family told her fans not to read it. That author said, she "couldn't breathe," just before she went unresponsive. So, I don't know who to trust.

@@dec23 I know......I am doing what they also said in getting Carrie Fisher's own books and seeing Debbie Reynolds' movies. I got Todd Fisher's book, but have only gotten a percentage of it read so far. I watched everything on You Tube twice. The audiobooks are comforting because she feels so back to life, but that makes you feel another separation. Today is weird because Carl Reiner just died. 98 years old and using Twitter to the day he died. I realized a 6 degrees of separation he had with Carrie Fisher. His son, Rob Reiner, was the ex husband of Penny Marshall who was bff with Carrie Fisher. And Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner's bff, made Spaceballs goofing on Star Wars.

They said that she didn't know she had sleep apena, Doctors said that I had it for years and I didn't know I had it until after I got married and scared my new husband when I stopped breathing when I was asleep.

Her official cause of death was listed as "sleep apnea and other undetermined factors" with those listed as "atherosclerotic heart disease and drug use". She had apparently suffered from severe sleep apnea for some time. Toxicology noted the presence of Meperidine (Demerol), Morphine, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Methadone in her system. She also tested positive for 6-MAM (in vitreous sample, which is an indicator of exposure to heroin), Cocaine and MDA (a chief metabolite of MDMA/ecstasy in her bile sample). It was also noted she was taking the Prozac along with Lamictal and Abilify as treatment for her bipolar disorder, and she had been taking (though she did not test positive for) un-prescribed Oxycodone. It is my knowledge (not as a medical professional but simply a fan trying to get a complete story) that whatever the specific cause she would have most likely passed, as she was without oxygen to her brain for a bare minimum of 15 minutes though who knows exactly how long she went without oxygen as she had been supposedly asleep for the entire flight and was not checked on until nearly touchdown. Her Glasgow score was a 3 on a scale of 3-15, with 3-8 said to be in a coma, upon arrival of paramedics on the scene. Her autopsy also showed extensive, severe arthritic changes to her cervical spine as well as degenerative arthritis and spondylosis. It's just sad overall. But as someone that suffers from the same mental illness, bipolar 2 disorder, and chronic pain, I can relate to the need to self medicate. It's just a shame, as she was such an intelligent, vibrant and ridiculously funny woman.
