You should really read the Miyazaki interview it clarifies a lot of this. Its a real place not a dream . Its where marika first step foot, became a god and where the erd tree was created . Its purposely cut off from the world by the veil also that is not the erd tree we see and it is not in the past or future.

I actually think that the article doesn't specifically rule out this possibility. I also think that it might be that Fromsoft is reserving it as a twist, akin to the Marika/Radagon reveal in the base game. I have some more in depth ideas about how the interview fits into this theory. I'm generally better at presenting these things by sitting down and talking about them, so I might record a short video about the IGN interview soon.

if i remember correctly that was always implied by the game but never explicitly stated. if so, i think that supports the ideas i put forward.
