Today I needed a "pick me up" and I found this. Of course I was and am aware of the incident. I was not aware of what an amazing, glib, articulate and comforting public speaker Jeff Skiles is. Thank you Wisconsin PBS for this posting. You have saved an old pilot from despair today. For the 31 folks who felt to give this a thumbs down . . . . you are of no account nor have you the least amount of compassion.

My appreciation is for the air traffic controller. His skill and experience. And the impact on him also. Hope he is well all these years later.

He is such a great speaker. Very comfortable and at ease on this stage. Not what I expect from a airline pilot. A real natural. I don't think he has a teleprompter.

Watching this again after many years; I remembering getting into a rant with some Oik who thought this was a crash. Still today I consider this an emergency landing on the only available runway (ask a seaplane pilot). A near perfect case of controlled flight into terrain. The dispassionate way in which both Skiles & Sully relay the events of the day is so professional it is actually chilling in a positive way.

What a fascinating story. Sully got all the press but Jeff was just as important to saving all those people. I wondered why someone with as much experience as him was flying as first officer. I don't know if it would've made any difference (most pilots are pretty competent) but they were lucky to have two senior pilots on that flight. Their cabin crew was highly experienced as well. They couldn't have had a better crew. I'm pretty sure that I would've died if I was on that flight. I can't balance very well so I probably would've fallen off the wing and I wouldn't be able to crawl back unless someone saved me. It sounds like they would've though.

I always thought it would be great if they had a time machine where you could go back to that time for a couple of hours and just walk around. Be interesting to hear what people talk about.

Did he mention that Sully turned on the APU before the FO reached for the check list? Or was that something for the movie?

I believe in Miracles. For this one, people claim that this shouldn't be called a miracle, and I do quite understand where they're coming from. I also think that it is the crews ability, training, and experience that saved them that day. Even the landing in between the ferry terminal was planned and calculated (if u hav read the book, they just didn't happen to land there) And of course, the amazing people that has come together-- ny waterway, dispatch, the passenger, etc. played a big role in this event. Something we ought to recognize. The only obvious miracle I could think of was the fact that the hudson river was clear that day when it's usually busy with boat traffic, and that the wave or the water current was smooth, perfect for landing. And it's this element in the story that is beyond the pilots/ human control that made the difference. Just imagine how many commuters would have been sacrificed if their were boats in that area, or would it have been a smooth landing if the current wasn't so smooth? Anyway, I don't want others to call this a miracle without considering the people's skill, abilities, etc that played a role that day. But I also don't like it when others don't recognize the little unseen miracles that was probably there. We have heard the account of the pilots, but we never heard the role God have played that day.
