The movie version is just a bit green and learns from her mistakes. The only thing you can fault her for, is turning into someone she is not. She got good at her job and acted as if she WAS the job. Freedom of speech you can be mean but the moment you provoke violence, constant harassment, abuse, strip freedom from an employee, you will be in court. But being called stupid and fat ONCE a isn’t gonna make anyone file a lawsuit all because your feelings got hurt ONE time with name calling. I’ve been called all sorts of VERY derogatory names by coworkers but I never wanted to take them to court because they’re just words. The moment it he sees my work performance then legal action will be taken. If you can imagine every person going to court because their coworker or boss called them a mean name the court would have lines waiting outside the door. More likely what you will get to do is contact HR and they will deal with the matter, the worst that can happen is them getting fired. But one time being called fat won’t get them to get any probation, time out, punishment, more like be forced to apologize right in front of you with HR next to you and that’s it

Miranda is a manipulator. She already knows why most of her new hires fail and why some exceed expectations. She's not being helpful, she's enjoying the 'acting' she is orating to schooling someone that wants to please her. Andy on the other hand has no idea why she is there nor knows how to please the bosses. Andy was never the ideal candidate for the job, but the chance to get the best candidate better than Andy wasn't there, and most businesses know that, yet they act arrogant when filling jobs which makes keeping the spots filled even harder.
@annamillan2903 Жыл бұрын
I love the movie. Andy learns a lot and becomes more self confident everytime She acomplishes her goals and gains Miranda's trust but it's with Emily that her ethic problems start. She knows how hardworking and how much work Emily puts into pleasing Miranda's requests but it's Andréa that stands out. As she has values it becomes conflictive to her. Finally she understands that the price to pay to be like Miranda is to sacrifice those same values She believes in and her personal life too. Neverthless Miranda makes her evolve.
@JCKershAuthor6 жыл бұрын
There is so much to be said about this scene I'm so glad Meryl Streep got an award for her performance. (Original edit, I thought she didn't.) She didn't fire Andy because she was 'stupid' or 'disappointed' with her for this one event. I honestly believe Miranda knew that she wasn't gonna get home; but it was a test to see how well Andy's 'work ethic' went to get her at least out of Miami. Or even set up a live web cam to see her girls. Miranda was basically being honest with Andy on where she stood with her, as apposed to just firing her because of circumstances outside her control.
@LilyZerep6 жыл бұрын
That's a different take to look at. It's like Miranda was testing her to think out side of the box. I always thought it was a bit extreme for Miranda to say she regrets hiring Andy because she couldn't getting her out of Florida when there was a hurricane.
@tracey53246 жыл бұрын
It is possible to drive it in 16 hours. Put her in a limo and tell the driver to drive like crazy, check all smaller airports when out of the storm zone to find one that is active and get her on board. Clothing and food either in flight or on landing and she is there. That being said the entire movie shows that her daughters matter more to her than work - for someone so demanding of her assistants she throws their time out the window, sending her on long trips to find supplies, toys and similar. We also learn later about the divorce, so her mother had probably already had to sit her kids down for the speech 'i'll always love you and put you first' and then not be there for something that is important to all of them. Yes it was a little uncalled for, but she was hurt, and I have had bosses that would have done a thousand times worse.

I worked a job when I was living in Los Angeles back in 2007. Training was two weeks and on one of those training days they showed us clips from this movie. The office manager showed us this exact clip and asked if Miranda was being unreasonable. Everyone said yes, she was being difficult. Well it turned into a long discussion about Miranda’s work ethic. Ultimately the response the manager was looking for was that Miranda wasn’t worried about getting home, she was worried about missing her daughter’s play. She expected Andy to put her work skills to practice. There was absolutely no possible way to get Miranda back to New York in the middle of a hurricane but Andy could have recorded the play or even just put her on speaker so she could hear. Andy failed to complete this task, therefore Miranda saw her as a sloppy worker. I have to admit, she had a good point.

@Eldorado-lq7pk2 жыл бұрын
Yes, your Manager made an interesting point. However, Miranda expected her assistants to be on call 24/7. As an employer she knows that employees have to be compensated for this type of dedication. Miranda should have hired well seasoned, highly experienced people as her assistants for the out of the box thinking she expected and paid them accordingly. In this day and age, Miranda could not treat or speak her employees the way she did without having charges filled against her. You call your employee into your office and then tell her she’s fat. Try doing that today and see what happens.
@SuperThalberg2 жыл бұрын
If Miranda is so brilliant, why didn't she ask for Andy to record the girls' performance? Or ask to be put on speakerphone? She spent months gaslighting and battering Andy into accepting her version of reality and following her exact instructions. Asking to fly home in the middle of a hurricane is insane. The writers chose the scenario specifically to illustrate Miranda's craziness. It was an effective scenario because Miranda was making a request that might have resulted in her own death had it been granted.

@zollith47685 ай бұрын
Here's my interpretation of this scene. Miranda was being especially irrational during the storm because of how desperate she was to get home: she knew missing the recital was going to be another nail in the coffin for her marriage, and undoubtedly lead to an argument like the one Andy accidentally eavesdropped on later, if not that very same one. I got the impression that she was finding Andy 'disappointing' for a good while before she finally had an excuse to express her dissatisfaction since the Cerulean speech. She consistently demonstrates that she becomes more cruel than usual when she's upset about something, in this case letting down her girls. Again. She really didn't need Andy to remind her afterwards how impossible it would be to not embarrass her husband with yet another no-show, and so shoos her away with her signature "That's all" while looking like she's dabbing the tiniest tear out of her eye. Hurt people hurt people, and Miranda does have a reputation for being a sadist.

My boss took complete advantage of me as a young and inexperienced employee. It was truly terrifying. I would always do everything right and she would find something wrong. I was even blamed for her mistakes. She ended up cheating on her husband and I would have to lie to her husband when he would call asking about her whereabouts. Needless to say I finally realized it was a complete circus and I quit and found a wonderful boss. This stuff happens in real life sadly. It’s not just in the movies.

according to youtube comments: "Andys friends were abusive, they didn't support her career" Her career: being called fat and silly, disappointing, being mentally abused over and over. Its sad how many people stand by Miranda's side, or identify with an abusive boss
@stefanmakara3734 жыл бұрын
It is not that we identify with an abusive boss, it is that her friends didn't despise her job because of the abuse she was enduring (remember how they tossed her phone around, fully aware her boss is mental, and could have easily got her in huge trouble or even fired?) they were pissed because she no longer had so much free time (lets be honest, ANY first job, even 9-5 one, would have knocked her out for a bit, she never worked before and would need time to adjust) and because of jealousy (glamazon? really?) and because they 'didn't know her' anymore, whatever that meant. She was completely transparent about why she's dressing up etc, it is expected of her at her job, and she is working very long hours, yes, but she is doing it for a great reward (which none of them cared about). Real friends would have asked if she thinks the abuse and long hours are worth it, and if she can endure it, and if she is happy/is sure she will be once she reaps the reward. Her 'friends' just bullied her. Mind you, the abuse STOPPED once she stepped up and started taking her job seriously (dressing the part was just a part of it, she also stepped up on the tasks) Miranda was still stuck up and with the 'do it now peasant' attitude, but she also had some respect for Andy, she no longer abused her, she was just strict, which is normal for a boss. Andy just had to go through the freshman hellweek and to take her job seriously.

Another thing:In my.mind, Miranda has seen them come and go. She recognizes talent but doesn't offer things on a silver platter. Emily won't grow beyond being first assistant and that's fine. Emily LOVES her job and works for everything that comes with it. Andy has other things going for her and Miranda did kind of challenge Andy in order to 'train' her in the world of publishing. She taught her how to be resourceful and how to adapt. But she created a monster. Maybe saw Andy having a future at Runway as an investigative reporter when she saw how Andy developed. But she unwittingly taught andy to choose for a future outside of runway. And you can't make everybody happy when you choose. That much is clear in this scene. Miranda chooses to remain editor in chief and the lifestyle because that is where her passion is. Even if it means disappointing her daughters regularly. But that is on her- not Andy's weight😉 so yes; she was right to call Andy out for a lack of resourcefulness(somebody in commented that andy could have arranged for a car to the nearest airport away from the storm) but the viciousness had more to do with her own choice resulting in disappointing her girls. But why would she share that with a mere assistant😉
