She talks about it in the trails tales podcast. Basically, REI is a large company, and she wanted to be more nimble with content and the rules bout what she can say and do (they took too long to adjust / answer questions) and interacting with the audience. She basically told them she wanted to do it on her own and they gave her full support. The support being no crazy trademarks, no non-compete, nothing negative at all. Just letting her do her own thing without lawyers shutting her down. @@TheJhtlag

I’m planning to start about 20 miles south in the Inyo National Forest (Horseshoe Meadow), it adds a little extra mileage but far easier to get permits! They’re released 6 months in advance of your start date, I think at 7am PT. It allows you to do Mt Whitney on day 3 or 4, and leave your gear at a base camp too. Good luck
