Miriam Makeba is an icon and national symbol, symbolizing the flame of unity in cultural diversity.
Zenzile Miriam Makeba (4 March 1932 - 9 November 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer and civil rights activist. In the 1960s, she was the first artist from Africa to popularize African music around the world. She is best known for the song "Pata Pata", first recorded in 1957 and released in the U.S. in 1967. She recorded and toured with many popular artists, such as Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, and her former husband Hugh Masekela.
Makeba campaigned against the South African system of apartheid. The South African government responded by revoking her passport in 1960 and her citizenship and right of return in 1963. As the apartheid system crumbled she returned home for the first time in 1990.
Makeba died of a heart attack on 9 November 2008 after performing in a concert in Italy organised to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a mafia-like organisation local to the region of Campania.

I remember the times that my parents would sit me at the record player and play the songs and they made me remember this song in particular and I learned that the Phoneticaler song never really knew what the words were but I just felt it in my soul at the age 5 and six when both of my parents died my mother first she died at 51 and I sat over her body in the morgue and I sang this song to her who would’ve known the blessing that I gave her and our family. Many years later my father passed away in my arms and I sang this exact same song to him and I felt the presence of God as he took his last breath sometimes your parents know more than you think they know obedience out weights sacrifice thank you Mama Africa.

Saw Miriam Makeba perform around 1960, give or take a year, at the Gate of Horn in Chicago. Gate was a Mecca for many folk music performers of that era, Bob Gibson, Pete Seeger, Judy Collin’s, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary and many more. She was captivating. Great time in music history.

These sisters gave me goosebumps. On the other hand, can anyone imagine her influence and power to be prohibited return to the motherland of your birth. Imagine! No, stop. You heard part of the story in the video intro for the Queen of 🇿🇦 Miriam Makeba. That injustice sucked then and it will suck whenever we remember her.
