Siki Jo-An nails the spirit of this joyful song. The little beetle whose tapping signals the coming good from God in the form of rains, is a representative of an indomitable spirit. WE NEED more music like this. More than ever, the world needs to see the little signs of God’s goodness to come. It transcends all peoples, places and times, because we need this kind of hope, and to be present in the moment for the little good things today. I sure hope Siki leans into these types of arrangements of traditional songs. They are so much more beautiful than pop music of today.

If you mean the ululating then I'm afraid you are wrong. I am Zimbabwean living in England and last year, my family and I were in a Turkish restaurant we go to often, but this particular night there was a birthday celebration of this Turkish person and their big family. After the cake came and they sang Happy Birthday, the women started ululating. We were sitting right behind them so my mum and aunty turned around and smiled at them in surprise. They also joined in on the ululating and the Turkish family were amazed and we all broke out into laughter. The Turkish family was so happy about the joint ululating that they cut us some large slices of cake, which was so lovely of them. I had always thought that ululating was uniquely Zimbabwean and South African. I never even knew that other Africans also ululate, so it was a big surprise to discover that non Africans have the same culture when celebrating. That day I learnt that ululating was intercontinental.

Qongqothwane is a traditional song of the Xhosa people of South Africa. It is sung at weddings to bring good fortune. In the western world it is mainly known as The Click Song, a nickname given to the song by European colonials who could not pronounce its Xhosa title, which has many click consonants in it. The Xhosa title literally means "knock-knock beetle", which is a popular name for various species of darkling beetles that make a distinctive knocking sound by tapping their abdomens on the ground. These beetles are believed by the Xhosa to bring good luck and rain. The song is known world-wide thanks to the interpretation of South African singer Miriam Makeba (herself a Xhosa). In her discography the song appears in several versions, both with the title Qongqothwane and as The Click Song. More information on the song can be found in Makeba's book The World of African Song (Chicago: Quadrangle Books, 1971), including the following translation: "The doctor of the road is the beetle / He climbed past this way / They say it is the beetle / Oh! It is the beetle." She explains the song as a traditional folk song which refers to the knocking beetle which makes clicking sounds and can revolve the top part of its body in any direction. The beetle is used in children's games to point the way home, but also has a deeper symbolism, pointing the way to a better future in times of trouble. In her biography (p.86), she mentions singing it in The Village Vanguard Club in New York, and calls it a "Xhosa song about a dreamy bride".

This is the first time I am seeing the South Africa version of "The Voice." I see a problem here. Most South African vocalists have voices directly from Heaven so how can they be judged? I have listened to these amazing vocalists and am in total awe. When I listen to the choirs also and hear their beautiful harmonies. I am from Trinidad and I am currently learning the pronunciation of this beautiful language as I will be soon learning this song as well as "pata pata." I will not be negative and say that it is difficult. I will say that I accept the challenge. I will sing the songs to the best of my ability but this beautiful vocalist in addition to all South African vocalists are in a higher class. I am inspired and very happy to have found this version. Who ever gave this a thumbs down is obviously brain damaged. "Heavenly Father forgive them for they know not what they do!"

If you still want to know what the song is about: The context behind the song is the celebration of a couple about to marry. They are searching for the "witch doctor" (more traditional healer) because they need his blessing for their marriage. They call the him the Qotqotwane (q=click) which means the knocking beatle. Because the knocking beatle is said to lead children home in the evenings and like the beatle the doctor will lead the newly weds to their new home together. So if you look up the direct translation it wont make sense outside of the cultural context. Edit: the knocking beatle is a type of beatle in south africa that hits its abdomen on the ground and makes a click sound to intimidate predators but ironically this action makes it a very popular game amonst the xhosa children.

@@kweenme8101 SA is how South Afrika is referred to. We know what you meant, Afi 😊 We never say ZA. ZA is the official international acronym used to identify a country, and not the colloquial way in which we speak of a country. I know what you mean when you say that hearing songs resides deeply within you and makes you emotional. The same happens to me. Colonisers destroyed so many people, heritages, countries and cultures. They continue to do do. Yet despite their violence and violent nature, black and brown people continue to stand strong. Aluta continua sista.
