@@actualawry yep, and they actually had to ray-trace it in half the intended quality because they had to redo the whole lighting right before the release and they didn't have the time to do it properly.

@@actualawryIt uses radiosity which is an approximation that only accounts for diffuse lighting, light/color bleed basically. It can be done with ray tracing but it's usually done with patch rendering for easier implementation. It doesn't work on shiny surfaces though, which is why almost all of the metal in the game is painted. Luckily that added to the art style.

1:24 Overcast is not a lighting situation in enough games. This looks absolutely stunning. Good job on all the hard work. I was upset to learn this wasn't just a mod for the original because it means we'll never get to play it. If EA was smart they'd rerelease both games with RTX in this fashion.

It's harder to make overcast look good. Out of context, it can just look like shadows are disabled. I agree, though, there's a lot of lighting scenarios games just don't go for. Like, I hate that games so consistently make night time unnaturally bright, even if you're in an electrically illuminated area and don't have to navigate the wild. I'm hoping with RT we start to see more authentic and varied lighting that evokes some of the shifting feelings you get in real life instead of just going for whatever is the most generically pretty. Same applies to volumetric lighting. Just shoving it everywhere annoys me. Sorry for rant. Just thinking

Wow, did not expect it to look this good, yet so true to the original! Great work! A full conversion with improved asset-quality would be a dream. There was a geforce now leak a few years back which had many games on it that have been released since then and there was "Mirror's Edge RTX" on it. However, that would require a beefy Nvidia gpu which I don't have...

I think some adjusting of the darkness of the some of building windows would go a long way to making it look better. The windows look too dark. I think they did that in the original game to hide the obvious cubemaps, and I have two pieces of evidence for this: 1. None of the interiors of buildings you go through, whether it's Pope's or ropeburn's office, CEC news, or indeed any of the other office buildings you go in, have tinted windows 2. The windows of the ONE building in the whole game that has proper reflections (in Prologue, while you're hanging onto the helicopter) doesn't have tinted windows, and in reality, most of the office buildings' glass would look like that.

I was so disappointed after reading the description this was made in unity and not with dxvk-remix.. Though I supposed it's still kind of a good news eventually. After all there is just so much that you can scavenge from the old ass game engine. But why unity though? Is modern UE so complex that it negates any engine similarity?

I’ll assume your question is intended for Eideren as I’m simply working off of their project. The tools at their disposition in UE4/5 were going to significantly increase the time it would take to port and debug things, Unity was a lot more forgiving in this regard. Regardless, the decompilation has already been achieved, meaning a decent chunk of work has been provided should someone wish to move it over to UE.

@@softsoundd Nvm, disregard my first comment. I just came to realize that (at least in the near and medium term) rtx remix could only work with fixed function pipeline games. Many older dx9 games still qualify for that, but UE3 simply doesn't cut it.

This is not RTX, how come? Because RTX is path tracing, this clearly lack many features of ray tracing and in fact he even mention that this was ported into Unity and is using their version of global illumination which is lackluster.
