The biggest difference between them two is that ME was set like a City in NEAR future, MEC is more like futuristic thing. I would prefer the first one but with more people around.

While the city in MEC is pretty cool, I think I liked the city of ME1 a lot more just due to it being closer to a modern setting rather than MEC's farther more dystopian future setting. I think MEC's feel movement and combat wise is vastly better than ME1 since it feels more smooth. Also, and this is probably just due to the lighting being pre-baked in ME1, but the lighting in the first game looks vastly better than the lighting in MEC. I also think MEC has some pretty amazing lore, though none of it is really explored anywhere enough. It's sad to see some more elements of ME1 were meant to make it into MEC (based on concept art) but I did thoroughly enjoy the story since ME1's story was greatly cut down and had a lot of stuff that just wasn't explained. I REALLY hope they make a sequel to MEC one day since the story was pretty decent and left good room for a sequel. But I know I can't really get my hopes up for that.
@NoName-ym5zj Жыл бұрын
lol in my opinion the less smooth running of ME1 is what gives it the feeling of impact and weight which makes the running so much more immersive, while the MEC's smooth camera felt almost detached from characters body, you were almost weightless and it just felt boring. It's kinda like the hit marker and impact sound in shooters that gives you that oomf feeling of hitting the target.
@roadsign289 Жыл бұрын
Since me1 is a much more linear and smaller game it gives the developer so much time to fine tune the details of the environment, which they did really well. I hope if they ever make another mirrors edge entry they would follow this route as well

That's funny, because between the two, MEC looks more alive as a world to me. ME is beautiful yes, but the bulk of the outdoor areas was a lot of flat, white surfaces. While in MEC, you get a lot more shapes and splashes of colour that help denote the area you're in. Plus, going into The View and seeing the art pieces and structures littered about the hiCaste offices and apartments, I think they're very attractive and striking. Edit: Better choice of words.

For some reason, MEC's atmosphere, while better than most games, just doesn't hold up to ME1. Between the soundtrack, art style and visuals, ME1 makes me feel more. While MEC's mechanics are smoother, they also detract slightly from immersion. The soundtrack, while excellent in both games, is better in ME1. It's more iconic, memorable, and I still can't listen to 'Still Alive' without shedding a tear. I actually skip it when listening on shuffle. MEC also has an excellent soundtrack, but feels a little colder and less emotional. I think it's because it uses slightly harsher sounds, a narrower frequency range, and more percussion. As for graphics... The only gripe I ever had with ME1 was the lack of real-time reflections, which the hardware at the time simply couldn't do. MEC's graphics, while more realistic and immersive, suffer at the hands of the colour scheme and level design. ME1 had such a striking appearance and atmosphere because the world felt plain and empty, for the most part. You rarely see other people, and everything in the city has a feeling of being a facsimile of an actual functioning, liveable city. It felt clean and bright and open, yet oppressively empty at the same time, much like the world of Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy or a dystopian future. MEC, on the other hand, feels like a real city - but everything is slightly off and futuristic, creating cognitive dissonance, and removes the empty and nostalgic atmosphere of the original. Overall, ME1 feels better, but MEC plays better.

I can agree with some of this. However, the effect of nostalgia occurs after a certain period of time. I feel like the reason it provokes such emotions is because it represents a certain time in our lives, and we revisit some of those memories when we hear the music (if that makes sense). I completely understand what you're saying though, but the reason I personally prefer MEC is because it ironed out a lot of the flaws in ME1. The game mechanics felt more fluid, the world felt more alive, there was more content, it developed the characters more, the story was a little more in depth, etc. The addition of the visuals and even an open world was also a great touch. I feel as though the music has the potential to become nostalgic too someday. All in all though, both games are incredibly flawed yet full of charm and spirit. I just wish people weren't so harsh on Catalyst when it released because the devs seem put off making another ME title which is such a shame bc the series has SO much potential and I enjoyed both games thoroughly.

In the intricate dance between past and present, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, while a dazzling display of innovation, seems to lack the raw authenticity that the original Mirror's Edge holds in the recesses of our gaming hearts. The new may shine bright, but the old Mirror's Edge resonates as an intimate journey, a ballet of parkour that transcends mere gameplay. The simplistic beauty, urgent pulse, and untamed spirit of the first game create a nostalgic tapestry that remains unmatched by the glossy allure of Catalyst. As we navigate the rooftops of memories, let's celebrate the evolution while cherishing the legacy, allowing the old Mirror's Edge to rest in the sacred corners of our souls, a timeless beacon of nostalgia guiding us through the vast city of gaming memories.

I like MEC for its world building and setting than the original but I prefer the original for its movement and sense of speed, running the original feels like your running fast, while the movement in catalyst while feels flexible and fluid makes you feel you're running very slow or it's very heavy feeling

Catalyst's mechanics were top tier, but the City design felt underwhelming and the story was unfinished. ME1 mechanics were clunky and slow in comparison, but the missions were more memorable overall. I would give anything for a sequel though

In my opinion Mirror's edge catalist makes it more obvious that the game takes place in 2070 or something like that, while the original Mirror's edge looks like it could take place in a year like 2025 because the city looks a lot like something we have today, even though they probably take place a few years appart from one another. Mirror's edge catalist also doesn't really have this characterless, white style the original had, it's still somewhat there but there is a lot more collor now, collors like blue, black, grey, and yellow can be found pretty much everywhere in the newer game.
@vast6344 ай бұрын
Even in 2070 you would find many grimy and very practical looking elements on rooftops. There is no need to make those sleek, clean and fancy. In that regard the first game looks more realistic.

I didn't get the criticism, MEC was a solid game, I enjoyed it immensely lol. It was a beautiful game, environment, the cutscenes as well, the color schemes, the parkour element, the open world aspect. I'm sad I started playing shortly after the servers were shut off, I would've liked to have played it online too. But exploring the city had me get lost more often than not when I was initially on my way to a mission and got side tracked checking out everything, collecting etc lol

Agreed. I think most people were looking for something different when they saw Catalyst. Catalyst was the first game I was introduced to. Though I am not too big of a fan of some of the gameplay elements, my goodness the city and the soundscape seemed so much fun to listen to. That’s a city I’d love to visit.

We need to make this relevant again so EA can consider making another game...maybe a petition i dunno. Those 2 games are a breath or fresh air cause after all that shooting, killing and other stuff you get bored of it and you want something relaxing not puzzle based or Stanley Parable type but kind of this game. The tone of these games are relaxing especially the music. I recently bought a PS5 and one of the first thing I've done was buying Catalyst for 3$ and despite being 900p 60fps it looks very beautiful. Even if a new game isn't in the cards they should patch Catalyst for PS5/XSX/S with graphic overhaul like Ray Tracing, higher framerate and resolution.

i love how dumb the traffic is in Mirrors Edge Catalyst, lol look at the cars driving in circles probably due to that confusing infrastructure at 0:32 . anyways i think catalyst was an ok attempt but its worse in almost everything besides a few new parkour mechanics. the original game had better aesthetical environments that still looks really good 15 years later, I think they needed the original environmental artist for the sequel, the futuristic world just felt uninspiring. and also having Faith portrayed as a cool fashionist in the promo materials in the first game works so much better to me rather than in catalyst where she now is hero vibing. like wow i wish they would had explored complexities in beauty in the sequel but instead the themes were generally about how cool it is to be punk. love the games but anytime i remember catalyst i get a disappointed

The first Mirror's Edge impressed me so much in its day, that the Catalyst ended up disappointing me. Maybe because I played it on the Xbox game pass and the graphics were very reduced. Now that I have a more powerful laptop, I bought the game on steam and turned the graphics up to max and I feel bad that I looked down on it back in the day. It is true that the first is still superior from the first impression I had, but the 2 is not bad at all. In many sections it is better. I love the 2 although my heart is more with the first.
