"Mirrored" Double Bass Grooves have been the singles most effective way myself and countless other drummers have used to develop both feet evenly and confidently. Laying the foundation for equal foot development will save you countless hours of frustrating double bass practice.
Practice these exercises and grooves slowly. Focus on evenness in sound and dynamic. Don't worry about speed. Develop control first and then the speed will come more naturally.
Trust the process and have fun!
Don't settle. Don't compromise. Decide what kind of drummer you want to be and develop the Discipline to become that!

Hi Jeff! I remember when I bought your DVD Mirrored grooves. It was fall of 2006 and I was at the very begining of my drumming road (2 years of active playing). And it totally changed my life. I am still using those exercises. Some as everyday warm ups, others to stay in shape, others to rise my skills. There are still many exercises and variations that are challenging to me and can improve my drumming. Especially I love 32nd note ruffs and the endurance exercises. I can't thank you enough for this. Because it had and still have a huuuuuge impact on me. Thank you Jeff, honestly you changed my life for better.

Wow, David! That's more than I could've asked for. You don't know how much reading that means to me and the work I've tried to produce over the years. Very grateful for your kind words. That means the world. Now, go and continue to be the best drummer you can be. Only you can do that!

I like your teaching style. You always point out the little, nuanced things that beginners need to keep in mind to practice more efficiently and avoid pitfalls. It's like as you have not forgotten what it was like being a novice at the drumset. :) (Which is not always an easy thing to do once you reach a certain level - let it be any skill/knowledge.) (I would also really like to hear a Paul Gilbert tune with that groove at 11:45. 🎸)

Thank you, Ati! You're exactly right. It's in those small details that really separate the musician. It's easy for me to not forget because I'm always working on it!!! Haha! Yeah, that would be a fun PG tune! 🤘

What an awesome instructional Jeff. Clear and concise. I would add, for those seeking full 4 way Independence, Repeat the exercises with open handed playing. I wish I had started playing open handed. It makes so much more sens.

Thank you very much, Chris! And YES! Open-handed is a vitally important approach to practice. Thanks for the reminder!

This video is awesome, thank you. I am currently trying to re-learn double bass since my longtime technique isn’t working for me anymore. I learned from Joe Franco’s book and playing along with records but I never tried to alternate patterns ever, always relying on right foot dominating patterns. I will definitely be working on this 🥁 👟 🔥

Thanks, Brandon! Franco's book is great for developing a foundation, but I think you'll find the mirrored approach may help out developing both feet more equally and consistently. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress!

What about doing the same with your hands? Switch up left and right hand lead on snare and cymbals.

Absolutely! It's always a good idea to try and balance out all of our limbs. But sometimes we need to focus on what our current priorities are as well.

Im a beater out of the head guy trying at this late date to get some double bass chops together. Im finding that Im having issues with articulation. Do I need to start burying the beater to get it to clean up? I've had right foot issues ( surgery) and I'm worried to start playing that way. Thoughts?
@JeffBowders
@JeffBowders 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ed! Great question. Lot of factors here and I would probably need to see you play to know exactly what's going on. Usually stronger articulation come from burying the beater BUT this depends on tempo and head tension. The faster the tempo won't be as affected and if your head is too tight you'll get a undesirable bounce off the head which will definitely compromise the articulation. Hope the helps!

@@JeffBowders Thanks for the reply, Jeff. I'm currently experimenting with more padding in the bass drum. Burying the beater for me is probably a bad idea, physically.
@JeffBowders
@JeffBowders 2 жыл бұрын
@@drumznfishes Great! Also, experiment with tuning the head a bit lower. This will slow the rebound a bit but can give you a nice "wet" articulation.

Hi Jeff! I'm a drummer from China. And i bought your book "The Mirrored Groove System" on Amazon. I like the Grooves in your book. In your book, you said that all this book is only talk about single double bass drum technique. But due to my personal practice, Although some of the Groove seemed like played in single strokes, some of the strokes still need double stroke or even 3 stroke motion. I have to practice lots of double stroke to make the single stroke groove on your book realistically playable in high speed(32ed notes sycopation Groove over 80bpm) . I even move stick control to double bass drumming. I'm i doing the right thing? Or is there other way to practice it?
@JeffBowders
@JeffBowders 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, great questions! The initial approach that I wrote the book on was taking a single stroke approach. However, as you know, you can apply endless footing patterns to the grooves to help you develop whatever technique you're trying to improve. Like with all drum books, using them to you help you develop your unique voice should always be the end goal!
