Hope you are doing well and hope to see u play live somwday!

Thank you very much! I remember that gig at GC. Lot's of crazy covers we probably jammed on for way too long. Ha! Hopefully see you at another one in the future. Thanks for stopping by!

Love Virgil!! Met him twice. Super nice guy. I have a number of his albums with Derek Sherinian/Planet X, Semantic Saturation, Nili Brosh, Kiko Loureiro, Agah Bahari, Bunny Brunel, CAB (featuring Tony on guitar), Devils Slingshot (again w/Tony) Soul Sirkus (2 versions; 1 w/Virgil the other with Deen C.) and Beyond Turbines.

To quote you from another video, because it's such an important piece of advice... "If you're not counting, you're guessing."
@JeffBowders10 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Especially with this fill. Counting is essential when you're playing phrases and orchestrations that are a bit "outside" the norm. Thanks for the reminder!

Check out (and maybe a great fill to break down) Brandon Fields "Aggressive Tranquility off his album, The Other Side of the Story w/Gregg Bissonette on drums. The fill done at 1:38 is one on the smoothest coolest double bass fills recorded IMO. Not super hard but smooth and just about perfect.
@JeffBowders10 ай бұрын
Of course you would suggest a fill from Master Bissonette! Love this whole album and this fill in particular. I will absolutely to a breakdown of it. Thanks, Mike!

There was a transcription in Modern Drummer back in 1988 with that drum break. There were a couple of examples off that Brandon Fields album provided on a floppy 45. I ended up buying the vinyl. It's a great fusion record. I ended up stealing some of those licks and still use them today.

16th note triplet less common than 8th note triplets? in fills on the drums? cough cough .. gospel chops ;)
@JeffBowders10 ай бұрын
Haha! Yes, definitely a lot of 16th Note Triplets happening in that world. But we do learn and count and feel less notes per beat than we typically do with more.

Really cool fill. Great breakdown and demo! Virgil fan from way back here, I never knew this CD existed! There are so many incredible double bass grooves and figures in his discography. Gotta mention 2 songs: Apocolypse 1470 BC from Derek Sherinian and Dragon Bones from Serious Young Insects. Some wacky double kick figures that seem very Meshuggah-inspired.
@JeffBowders10 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's a great album. Marco Minnemann also plays a few tracks on it as well. I couldn't agree more that first Sherinian album and Serious Young Insects were game-changing albums for sure! A new double bass standard was set.
