It's fun for me to enjoy your enjoyment, I always wished to work on stuff that was 'good', it really matters to me. Thank you for your comments! We did quite well with the same money a film like 'Mission Impossible' could spend on a launch party? It would have been a much 'bigger' film had not the animation overrun by maybe about a year, by which time Columbia had almost forgotten they'd even commissioned it? For me, the '10 days later' shot was a highlight, shot with a £1000-per-day 10mm optex snorkel lens, (Dave said, "like the beginning of 'Star Wars' but with a girl on a bed") and the 'anti-Helena dome tearing from light to dark pov' - achieved with a rare z-arm crane from Texas, perhaps the only one in England, with an amazing Nikon 6mm lens designed to inspect oil rig struts? That shot took 3 months thought, 'how can we give Steph the camera?', solved not by me but the excellent dolly grip Jem Morton, who was trawling Arri grip dept on his (rare) days off. Screen time, 3-4 secs tops? such is life... Later I had cause to deliver a dvd to 'Dark Crystal' dp Ossie Morris, as the 'spiritual sequel', and we spent a delightful afternoon discussing it, his faded, well-handled Oscar for 'Fiddler on the Roof' behind him. It felt a lot like squaring a circle. I take immense pleasure in your pleasure, with my best wishes, Antony

@@antonyshearnchannel Wow, its incredible to have one of the creators of the film here on my channel providing such gems of information that I doubt exist anywhere else, now immortalized in this comment section. I've now had three people who worked on this film interact with my video in some way or another. Its such an honor, more than I ever could have imagined when making the video. Its always a pipe dream when reviewing a film that the creators will see my work, but its happened twice now on two separate videos, a huge encouragement to make more content. I hope to speak to you again some day, maybe on a new video if I ever get another one out. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment here. Absolutely amazing.

@@congratsbro. Haha, I still have the (only) key- cast in resin, broken twice and glued back together, it was 'summoned' by the Henson company and Fedex'd to their lot on La Brea ave (once upon a time was Charlie Chaplin's studio) to be cast and would/could have been a MacDonald's happy meal toy had there been any realistic publicity. The key has a screwdriver point, that Helena uses to enter the white dome, one of several deleted sequences. 🙂

I watched this movie when I was super little, about the same age as the protagonist! The dreamlike quality and the protagonist herself always felt so much more genuine to me than any other movie I saw as a kid, so it makes sense that a lot of it was improvised and cobbled together by a lot of very passionate and talented people. It's one of those movies that unsettles you, but in a way that's really intriguing. I kind of half-forgot it, but so much of the surreal imagery stuck with me that I had to go down a Google rabbit hole trying to figure out its title again. Had to go from search terms like "WEIRD MOVIE WHERE THE GIRL PUTS HER FACE IN A MIRROR, NEIL GAIMAN MAYBE???" valentine was my favorite too, i thought he was dreamy when i was like 10. for some reason i remember him actually betraying Helena and stealing the mask and escaping to the real world in the end?? I think it was just an imagination sequence that was so existentially shattering to me as a child that I was too freaked out to notice the part where they were like, "Just kidding, that didn't really happen!"

My sister was obsessed with this movie. She would often put it on and I would see it in passing. I would see it occasionally in It's totality. When I got older, and I watched that movie again after rediscovering it after completely forgetting about it; I understood why my sister was obsessed with it. She was going through a lot of mental health issues that were undiagnosed at the time that were difficult to get her to cooperate with getting seen for. There were times where she was very vulnerable and sweet and kind and herself. But after some stuff happened, she just wasn't herself. She was more promiscuous, breaking rules, running away, drinking, partying, etc. I remember knowing that something was seriously wrong and she started destroying her art and supplies and purposely broke her guitar. (Trigger warning: self un-aliving-she shortly tried to remove her existence after this). I often saw a side of her that no one else did- I knew that she felt lost and out of control. Even tho at the time I was too young to understand what i was witnessing, I knew when she wasn't herself. But the malicious trouble maker was the version she was known as, but it wasn't her true self. She was written off a lot of the time because of her behavior. But as I've gotten older, I've realized that her struggles were overlooked because of the actions that the authority in her life found problematic or disruptive. This movie is aesthetically beautiful and fantastically written. One of those movies that even if it doesn't speak to you, it's memorable. And if it does, its unforgettable, and makes you tear up and feel seen🥹

My mother whom I no longer have in my life, gave this movie to me when i was a child. She knew very well I would cherish it, and I do hold it so dearly and so fondly. Not many things make me feel as good/happy as this movie, the labyrinth and the dark crystal do. Thank yoU SO SO SO much for this AMAZING video. P.S The ending montage made me SOB. Beautiful!

God I loved this film. I watched it over and over again, right along with Labrynth and Dark Crystal. I was a Henson kid. Gaiman was (and still is) my favorite author growing up. His touch is definitely seen and felt in this film. I'd kill for a copy of it now, I miss it. It was creepy and clever and just beautiful. Also, side note - has anyone listened to the album "Where's Neil When You Need Him?" It has a couple of amazing songs dedicated to/about this, my favorite being Wake The White Queen by the Cruxshadows.

Just saw it for the first time tonight after going through a rabbit hole of researching “artist of Batman: Arkham Asylum comic” aaaaand my god do I have a new favorite artist. I am genuinely shocked for how well not only the acting is, but just the style and how it gels so well with the script, giving such a unique feeling. The script itself is just * *chef’s kiss* * with the dialogue being cute and honestly really funny at certain parts, and the characters are so interesting… and TERRIFYING I LOVE IT!! This is the kind of fantasy I’ve been wanting, something different. I don’t need there to be another Tolkien flavored adventure story with the same basic premise, style and feel. This film is why I ADORE the Dark Crystal, it’s a Fantasy that creates its own feel and style. The creatures are eerie and slowly you get use to it to find that they’re really beautiful nonetheless. I also loved how it dealt with stories and writing in general, having really funny “riddle” sections and having books that have conscious thoughts and feelings… without needing to say a single word. I don’t know, I found a new favorite and I’m FORCING EVERYONE I KNOW TO WATCH. A loooot will get turned off, but man, I wanna help make this a cult classic.

I'm commenting kinda prematurely since I'm only 10 minutes into the video, but wow yeah, thanks KZbin for recommending this, and thank you for making this video. I saw Mirrormask on the TV maybe around 10 years back, then found the DVD at a flea market, aaand since then I've watched it whenever it's my birthday (has turned into a bit of a tradition). The movie has such a mystical vibe to it I can't explain, and some parts are very unintentional ASMR to me, espeeecially the "Close to you" scene and the next 5-ish minutes afterwards with no dialogue - tho said ASMR vibe also goes for some of the soundtrack. Wish more people knew of the movie like you much said around the start of this, so difficult to recommend properly when the DVD is the only way to watch it.

I NEVER forgot about this movie because the soundtrack and the visuals were just so unique and striking. I am of the thought that this film was relatively safe from obscurity because Neil Gaiman is a visionary in surreal fantasy. had my copy for 13 years now, pretty sure my life would be completely different if I never watched it, this video was great defiantly gave me a new appreciation to my all-time favourite movie its a shame they priced it so much in the USA since its $5-$25 on amazon in Europe

I love that movie so much. I'm fortunate enough to have purchased a copy on DVD for $20 I think. It didn't deserve to be ignored the way it was.

I actually saw this movie at the Landmark's Nuart Theater in Santa Monica (the one that shows The Rocky Horror Picture Show every weekend). I honestly don't remember why I ended up seeing it there as I'm not much of an indie movie guy, but I'm glad I did. Bought the DVD when it came out and have watched it repeatedly for almost two decades now. It's funny that whenever I mention it to friends, they've either never heard of it or hate it, lol.

I'm so happy I found this video! I love this movie and actually have the DVD for it. I found it in a Walmart several years ago in a 3 for 1 with Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. I never knew the gem I had. (For anyone desperate to watch this, KZbin has the digital version)

I was fortunate to find at a third-party bookstore called Bookmans in Tucson Arizona. A large illustrated book about the movie. Filled with pictures. And information how about how they made this work. That was over 10 yrs ago. And i still share it and this film, with anyone who sits at my Dungeons & Dragons table.

@@congratsbro. well, I mean it! You might take a million years to release a video, but they are masterpieces! My only criticism is I liked the format of your first video the best. You broke the fourth wall every video after that, and it doesn't feel right. Just my humble opinion, though.

Montrealer here...perhaps its because of where i live but i have a feeling a few shows from Cirque Du Soleil were either inspired by this film or if the film was inspired by Cirque du Soleil....it feels incredibly familiar to me. The tone, setting, soundtrack. Great video!

This movie was fundamental in my art and music taste and a nostalgic favorite. If anyone is searching for it, I have found it several times through public library systems, and it can be ordered if your branch doesn’t have it. I was lucky enough to find a cheap dvd for sale a while ago and treasure it

Hey man just wanted to say keep up the good work! I got both Wilfred and Drag Me to Hell in my library on your recommendation and I'll have to get this on the list! BTW I saw your pam video blew up which is dope dude awesome work! If anyone really watches the video through and through and still sides with pam, they are definitely a pam. It's actually a pretty good karen detector honestly. Send it to a potential karen and if they side with pam, they're probably a karen.
