You have to pay tax even on one time earning/gift/lottery winning amount as well. This isn't new. You can't go like I take a project for one week which can make me 12L. However because it isn't regular and not from the same client every time that's why I should be exempted from the tax. What people do is - They create an organisation (firm). Now you can show lots of expenses as well as take salary from that organisation and get exemptions under many clauses. If you remember the government did not exempt custom duty on a farrari car, gifted to Mr. Tendulkar by some country. The government itself can award money to Gukesh. But still he has to pay the taxes. Entitlement is not good for good, once you create an exception then tomorrow something or someone else will ask for the same favour because of other reasons. Let's abide by rules. Celebrate the moment. Instead pressurize the govt for more investment in sports.

Its true giving a blind blanket waiver for such awards will become difficult to prevent money coming in the name of award which can be used for any purpose. Waivers or exemption can be always done on case to case basis as done for cricket players. People who had no clue who Gukesh was and what chess is are now creating unnecessary controversy. Is it the first time Gukesh has earned a prize money ? Where were these tax crusaders when Gukesh had won previous tournaments and earned prize money ? Gukesh had earned over a crore rupees in prize money when he won candidates title. At that time all these channels had no idea who Gukesh was and they did not even care. It is not as if only Gukesh will pay income tax. Ding Liren too will pay tax on his prize money. Carlsen, the previous world champion also pays tax on his prize money.

I don't understand. Even a person who earns salary of 10 Cr works super hard the entire year and still pays 42% tax. You can't exempt it for one people and levy it for thousands others. Yes the tax is high and people will happily pay taxes if they get proper infrastructure, services in return.

The middle class also has no guarantees. The tax system should not continue to provide loopholes for the rich. The tax system should be fair for all.

I do not know why people are making it so big as if Gukesh will not get anything in future as well as in present through sponsorship and prize money. In fact other countries are charging much more taxes than us on sportsman prize money. For example Spain has taxation of 59%. But the issue is they are using that to develop sports in their countries but our development is unknown.
