I get many questions about the dendrobium nobile type hybrids and their seasonal cycle - especially when they don't behave the way we expect them to.
As always, thanks for watching.

Just think of them as 'seasonal' - they grow in the growing season and they rest when it's not. And their Winters are cooler (well, yes), brighter (the leaves have fallen from the trees), and quite dry (wet/dry seasons).

Thanks for the vid, Roger. My biggest dendro. Nobile is getting buds at the moment on every cane there is.... 👍😉 Five big canes (three of them from last year😁) with buds and blooms on a lot of places all over the plant... It's going to be spectacular.... I hope. The feeding I did was every 2 weeks 20-20-20 full soak rainwater. The rest of the year I followed the feeding program that is given us from the "orchideeënhoeve" in Holland. For me, it worked out very well in combination with your tips.

Thanks for that Roger, I also love Dendrobiums. Mine are doing ALL the things you mentioned. One of them, ‘Wonderful Purple’ only decided on a short rest after blooming on and off all summer last year despite being treated just like the others. She currently has two flowers on with a lot more buds coming. I did start giving her a trickle as the buds became larger, following your advice. Thank you again 😊

I am very new to orchids (well, I've always had phalaenopsis) A widow in my church sold her late husband's orchid collection, because she was so worried she wasn't caring for them properly. I had no self control, I bought 25 various species. Some are mounted, some are in a hanging pot. I am thankful this video was randomly on my KZbin feed because you seem very knowledgeable! Some of these orchids seem stressed and have yellowing leaves, some have yellow with brown spotting that is coming from the end of the leaf inward. So I'm mildly panicked - but I like what you said, panicking won't fix anything! Edit: the one I'm most concerned with is labeled a dendrobium speciosum var curvicaule. It's mammoth - nearly 2' feet in diameter. Some of the lower leaves are yellowing with brown spots and falling off. I have read a little bit and it seems it does that in the fall. But here in central Florida it hasn't felt like fall yet.
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger

Dendrobium speciosum can be difficult to grow as in the wild it grows on rocks in open woodlands where there is a constant air-flow. It will need a dry Winter rest too.

I have a vigorous species. I have put it on a top shelf and ignored it since the nubbins have appeared. Every time I see it and want to water/feed it, I have to tell myself don't do it! Last year the nubbins turned into keikis. If they still turn into keikis, I will blame it on too much summer sun😂 and give it more of a summer/winter differential. But I think until the appropriate hormones are released by the plant the meristem cells can be either or. I would assume the default would be keikis but I don't know. There are a few good online articles (with references) on inflorescence meristem. Some are easier to read then others.

On the Den that Marius gave back to you, there appears to be nubbins on the tall thin cane near the top. I noticed several times when you were speaking. Nuthatch are lovely birds. If you had a regular tree then they would be running up and down the tree looking for suet like the chichadees eat. Thank you, Roger, for this great and informative video! My Den. kingianum has bloomed while growing a new cane, which did not grow its terminal leaf, and it seems it just will not do it. It took a bit over a month of rest, now it is growing two new canes and it also started growing a keiki from the apex of an old cane. I was surprised! I recently bought a Den. lodigesii on line. It is potted in bark and is a total mess of keikis, but virtually no new growths. I wonder if I should mount it. My other Dendrobiums are doing fine. It is summer in Argentina right now, they are all growing new canes and roots, so I am feeding them. Happy growing! 🌸☀️
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger 2 жыл бұрын
Den. kingianum mainly grows in rocky places and some of those places get quite cold in winter and remain almost totally dry. lodigesii naturally grows keikis and they weigh the canes down so they can take root. This habit can form quite large 'mats'. I have mine mounted, but in the growing season it lies flat rather than being hung up with the others.

Keep it lightly watered to support the blooms - it's been 'forced' into bloom. Sometime soon - probably as the blooms start to fade, you should get new canes starting. This is the time to start feeding and watering more frequently.

We live in Florida so we have high rain/humidity/sun, The plant got so big (some stocks were 3 Ft. long and pulling my pot over!), I finally divided it and ended up with at least 6 plants. They also continued blooming! I had to cut (sorry!) the long stalks that were bare of leaves in order to repot. Guilty? YES. But I now have about 6 mini plants that are all producing small growths. Hi Roger, I wish I could re-like a video. I just got 2 new dendrobiums for Valentines Day…I’m pretty sure they are nobilies. I killed the first - no dry rest. Please explain the “pushing-on” verbiage. I’ve heard it from several veteran orchid growers…but it’s still unclear. I watered when there was still leaves pushing on at the top - ended up with a dead plant. I grow in the Pacific Northwest- but the dry area and in a “sunroom”. I struggle with keeping my humidity above 30% in my growspace. I do have much cooler spots in my house I can install grow lights in, to give the bright light but cooler method (60 degrees F). I’d appreciate an update on these 3 plants. Thanks, Becky

The expression is normally used for heavier feed levels and more often when a plant is in full vegetive growth mode. But great care has to be taken depending on pot size and media type/age. In a pot that holds moisture for quite a while, the frequency would be far less. In a smaller pot especially with higher temps., the media would dry quickly and need watering much more often. The media should be heading towards dry but never quite getting there.

For a change I think I agree with you Roger. I think the decision has been made long before you see the bud. Admittedly that is just my guess. It is also been said that you can't raise baby guppy fish with the parents because it somehow stunts their growth and you can't raise them in a 55-gallon tank it's too big they can't find the food. Well I'm doing both, I'm happy with the growth and as they do grow they seem to be finding the food. I think people get an idea in their head and start stating it as fact before bothering to find out if it is fact backed or not.

The nobile types don't need bright light in the growing season - just during the Winter rest period. Old canes still provide some support for the overall plant as they store nutrients but too many leafless canes will drain the plant.

@@GrowingOrchidswithRoger thank you. I did see that article and was discouraged in seeing that it’s hard to cultivate. Also, that it molds after 3 years. Any suggestions as I haven’t any experience with Dendrobiums at all.

can you explain kiki's and Vander bucket? I've had success with the big most common without any fuss. But not having been fed or replanted

Keikis can be researched via a google search and the Vanda bucket hasn't been used for a long time. This is an older vid.

I just bought a Dendrobium nobile and it has such a tight rootball I could hardly get any of the old potting medium out. What is most likely to help it, leaving the packed roots and putting it in a bigger pot, or being rough enough with it to get root pruning done?
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger 10 ай бұрын
Personally, I wouldn't repot until there are new roots growing - that way, any damage is limited as the old roots will be replaced into new media.

I am new to your channel, my dendrobium after a few days of cold weather and even after shielding them from these conditions, many of its leaves are yellowing and falling. Help! They receive morning light. I have been reading that I should hold back some of the watering. Is this correct?

Do nobilies like to be slightly pot bound as mine I think might be in too large pots,but one is a big plant the other has fewer canes and a couple really dry and shrivelled canes should I cut them,also have not had flowers on either of them,I wandering if I should repot totally in bark?

Nobile types are ok in larger pots but great care has to be taken with watering. To bloom, they need to be cooler and brighter in Winter than they were in Summer with very little water and no feed.

Great video! I have a dendrobium orchid that I bought almost two years ago. It has not bloomed since. It has produced many new canes and leaves but not sure why it won't bloom. I do let it dry out quite a bit in between waterings. Any ideas how to get it to bloom?

My canes do not grow upward. Is that the way they’re supposed to grow, or do they need to be propped up?
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger Жыл бұрын
Most Den. nobile types are upright growers, but some do bend over or even hang down - it depends what went into the 'mix' of the hybrid.

Very, very usefull talk for me. I have 4 nobiles mounted on trees in the garden where they are for 4 years now, nubbins showing on some, but as this year´s rain season has been poor, their roots seem very very dry. Should I water the roots only? Should I wait for the rain to come later on? Thanks for any advice, if possible.

If the canes look as though they are starting to shrivel, then a little water will do no harm.

There is no 'correct' media for nobile types - but something like a mix of small/medium bark will do.

There are guidelines to get the nobile type hybrids to bloom but many will still produce some blooms without any 'special' treatment.

my dens are out of sync with the seasons my devonianum grows through winter so does my wardianum i thought they were winter resters
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger 2 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of confusion between 'drier in Winter' and a true 'Winter rester'. A true Winter rester will come from deciduous forests where there is little rain during those months - plus it gets quite a bit cooler.
