"A little misadventure with The Morrigan." You mean that time The Chooser of the Slain came to Cu Chulainn in the form of a maiden and offered to lay with him, but he refused her and so she attacked him in the river as an eel until he plucked out her eye, and then she attacked him as a wolf until he broke 3 of her ribs, and then she charged him as a heifer until he broke one of her legs. She then appeared as a bent and broken crone, with all of her injuries, and offers him a drink from the cow she is milking. To thank her for the milk, he heals her injuries. Recap: The Morrigan tried to kill Cu Chulainn three times after he refused to bed her, and he defeated her each time, which should be triple impossible since her divine power is literally to decide who falls in battle. On a side note, the raven who landed on Cu Chulainn after his death was also probably The Morrigan.
@theonewhouploadsnothing17042 жыл бұрын
That’s hilariously awesome!
@DeaganDunne2 жыл бұрын
Im not certain how entirely accurate this is, but some interpretations of The Morrigan paint her as very petty (much like most of the Tuatha De'Danan or however its spelled) but also honorable. Using her powers to choose him to die in her attacks wouldn't be honorable. That or her powers to choose who dies doesn't work when she's in the fray. Or he was destined to die as he did and even the goddess of death can't cheat destiny. Hard to tell.
@cphtfluke75652 жыл бұрын
@@DeaganDunne Funny thing about The Morrígan's title: CHOOSER of the SLAIN. 1. The Morrígan must CHOOSE when and upon whom to exercise her powers. HOWEVER 2. The combatants must both fight with the intent to SLAY each other, or the combat falls outside of her sphere of influence. So I suppose as long Cu Chulainn wasn't actually trying to kill the eel, the wolf and the heifer, The Morrígan couldn't use her powers. I don't know enough about this particular legend to know if Cu Chulainn realized these animals were actually The Morrígan, or if she chose these animal forms in an attempt to trick him into trying to choose lethal combat. If he realized it was her, it's entirely possible he chose non-lethal combat to deny The Morrígan her divine advantage.
@daviddaugherty2816 Жыл бұрын

A regular person would follow the vows for a period of time specified at the outset, and at the end would shave and burn their hair alongside an animal sacrifice. Samson was supposedly special in that he was a Nazirite from birth (an angel even telling his mother to follow the food/drink parts while he was in the womb) with his vows meant to be life-long. I heard someone say that the Irish gods metaphorically shrunk down until they became fairies, while the heroes grew so metaphorically large they literally became giants. There's a legend about Finn Mcool being a giant, and building a stone causeway to go fight another giant in Scotland, and a lot of famous fairies bear resemblance to old Irish deities, so I think that makes sense.
@timothymclean6 жыл бұрын
So, the ancient Celts didn't really understand what "metaphor" means?
@mariascanlan82386 жыл бұрын
Jack Stuchbery i think this is rly accurate because in ireland obviously religion is quite prominent but many deities arent specified to be deities and are often simply called "beings" and arent really explained much further.
@Spartan1556 жыл бұрын
I think the fact Shakespeare refers to Madb as a fairy has always pretty much confirmed this. But its more like in this video, they turned into kings/queens first then overtime as the otherworld became more fairylike they got re-absorbed into it.
@daragon00556 жыл бұрын
Jack Stuchbery, that is correct but he was originally a giant, as shown by some big footprint somewhere near the causeway, and he scares away the Scottish giant as posing as his 17 month old son and biting off the gold finger of the Scottish giant which he had… for some reason.
@OnePieceSpecial6 жыл бұрын
The versions about Fionn Mac Cumhaill being a giant are only used in children's books, possibly to simplify the story. In the actual myths, Fionn is not a giant, but is regarded as a "giant of a man", basically meaning he's bigger than the average sized man. The same goes for the rest of the Fianna.

Unlimited Blade Works: Died after managing to kill Kirei after Kirei forced Cu to kill himself, referencing how he managed to kill his murderers after they fatally wounded him. Heaven's Feel: After being killed by Hassan-i-Sabbah, Cu's corpse remained standing for several seconds before being dragged down into the lake by The Shadow, referencing how Cu's corpse managed to keep standing for days straight even after his corpse began to decompose.

As a Swede/Norwegian: I consider Scots to be honorary Scandinavians (I mean, the Scottish highlands _is_ the southernmost part of the Scandinavian mountains) and feel a deep cultural kinship with the Irish (since we're both the originating places of the archetypical fairies and giants and stuff). I just wish Celtic mythology was as popular as Norse mythology. Thor and Odin get overexposed a lot imo, and Setanta and The Morrigan get sadly underexposed. I want video games and movies and comic book series with characters based on Setanta and the Tuatha Dé Danann, damnit!

Here's a more detailed description of the ríastrad for those of you who are curious: "Then took place the first twisting-fit and rage of the royal hero Cuchulain, so that he made a terrible, many-shaped, wonderful, unheard of thing of himself. His flesh trembled about him like a pole against the torrent or like a bulrush against the stream, every member and every joint and every point and every knuckle of him from crown to ground. He made a mad whirling-feat of his body within his hide. His feet and his shins and his knees slid so that they came behind him. His heels and his calves and his hams shifted so that they passed to the front. The muscles of his calves moved so that they came to the front of his shins, so that each huge knot was the size of a soldier's balled fist. He stretched the sinews of his head so that they stood out on the nape of his neck, hill-like lumps, huge, incalculable, vast, immeasurable and as large as the head of a month-old child." "He next made a ruddy bowl of his face and his countenance. He gulped down one eye into his head so that it would be hard work if a wild crane succeeded in drawing it out on to the middle of his cheek from the rear of his skull. Its mate sprang forth till it came out on his cheek. His mouth was distorted monstrously. He drew the cheek from the jaw-bone so that the interior of his throat was to be seen. His lungs and his lights stood out so that they fluttered in his mouth and his gullet. He struck a mad lion's blow with the upper jaw on its fellow so that as large as a wether's fleece of a three year old was each red, fiery flake which his teeth forced into his mouth from his gullet." "There was heard the loud clap of his heart against his breast like the yelp of a howling bloodhound or like a lion going among bears. There were seen the torches of the Badb, and the rain clouds of poison, and the sparks of glowing-red fire, blazing and flashing in hazes and mists over his head with the seething of the truly wild wrath that rose up above him. His hair bristled all over his head like branches of a redthorn thrust into a gap in a great hedge. Had a king's apple-tree laden with royal fruit been shaken around him, scarce an apple of them all would have passed over him to the ground, but rather would an apple have stayed stuck on each single hair there, for the twisting of the anger which met it as it rose from his hair above him." "The Lon Laith ('Champion's Light') stood out of his forehead, so that it was as long and as thick as a warrior's whetstone. As high, as thick, as strong, as steady, as long as the sail-tree of some huge prime ship was the straight spout of dark blood which arose right on high from the very ridge-pole of his crown, so that a black fog of witchery was made thereof like to the smoke from a king's hostel what time the king comes to be ministered to at nightfall of a winter's day." - (translated by Joseph Dunn)

My family history aside, Irish mythology always fascinated me. I love how the gods are basically super humans, but still human. I forget which one it was, but he came to a town and a guard refused to let him. He declared that he was god so-and-so. The guard didn't believe him. The pair settled on a deal that IF he really was the god so-and-so he'd be able to beat the guard at chess and the two played and god so-and-so could not enter until he won. The game probably wasn't "chess" as we know it, and the monk who wrote this out, noted in the margins that at the proposed time Chess had not yet reached Ireland so it was some other game. BUT STILL ... "No, I don't believe you're a god so you have to beat me at chess or no pub for you, buddy!" Irish god: "M'kay, set 'em up."
