Kind of funny how in Greek mythology, Chronos is upset that one of his sons is going to overthrow him, so he eats them and Zeus eats the mother of his alleged usurper to try to head off a similar prophecy. Ra's just upset that Nut and Geb are constantly bumping fuzzies, so Ra just makes it illegal for Nut to ever give birth on any given day. Why didn't Chronos or Zeus think of that? Oh, yeah. Someone found a loophole.

ancient peoples were very good at maths, especially with the Indians, Egyptians and mesopotamians, the issue was that knowledge was lost, not readily available to Europeans, or was considered heretical in some ways since ya homeboy Aristotle and a few others were right about everything (they weren't); you look at the points where Europeans started learning from the Indians, Persians, China and others in the East and Middle East you'll see their maths get a lot better

Y’know, I just realized, Red went to school for Math, but now she does like nearly *all* of the humanities/arts. Cultural studies, language (when she has to understand translations and research all the different pronunciations), reading comprehension, writing, speaking/performance, drawing, music (both playing an instrument and singing), and even occasionally full-on animation! Like wow, that’s so many skills, holy! Everyone say “thank you, Red!” For sharing all her work with us, and for showing us her journey of growth instead of deleting older videos. @@nicholassgobero My guess for why most animators delete their old stuff is because most animators/artists use their channels and socials as extensions of their portfolios (and portfolios are often filled with exclusively polished/presentable pieces for professionalism and for artists to put their best feet forward with businesses/clients/etc.) Source: I took a Portfolio class where I was among many students that spent the semester creating slightly more finished/polished pieces, because my usual sketchy artwork wasn't gonna cut it.

To many Egyptians, Ra is kind of like the old grandfather of the family. He's powerful and holds a lot of sway but mostly wants to be left alone. He's seen and done everything and is excruciatingly bored because of it.

For anyone confused by Horus being the son of Geb and Nut in this myth when you probably know him as the son of Isis and Osiris, remember Egypt is a 2000 year old civilization (3000 if we include the Ptolemys). Gods were switched around all the time. Anubis was originally the son of Ra before he was added to the Osiris myth. Ra has a ton of different names (Amun, Amun-Ra, Kephri, etc.), and there are two Horuses. They're referred to as Horus the elder and Horus the younger, and they are sort of two separate deities but also the same person. Egyptian mythology is a mess. A beautiful, furry filled mess.

There was also a time when Anubis was the god of the underworld. Then Set did his stabby-butchery murder of Osiris. Anubis was booted off the throne of the underworld to become the judge and god of mummification while Osiris took his job.

They should have created a myth that Khonshu had accused Thoth of cheating him, and to placate his anger, Thoth, Ra, and the other gods had agreed to create one day every four years that was to be dedicated to the veneration of Khonshu, on which no work was to be performed during the day, and the night was to be dedicated to gathering outside and celebrating with food and drink and praise to the Moon. That sells it to the populace as a vacation/party day, and the priesthood as a religious holiday to increase veneration of the gods. Win/win.

Those 5 days are seen in a negative way and are when Sekhmet is at her most powerful with all the people dying of disease and sunstroke around this time of year; the Lioness is on her yearly rampage with those 5 days being the worst of it. They are not days of veneration, they are days of fear and bad luck. Good luck convincing people to be happy and celebrate on such a time of year. All those mosquitoes definitely won't spread disease more rapidly if they held festivals at this time. People born on those days were even seen in a negative light, being born on the same day as a god and all; you don't challenge the gods.

The sheer goddamn _mess_ of a lunisolar calender is also why Julius Caesar had to reform the calendar. Contrary to some popular accounts (especially on Tumbler) the Roman Calendar by then had 12 months (personally I'm skeptical it _ever_ had ten months, our direct evidence for this is pretty scant) and the year started in January (it did _use_ to start in March, which is why the names of the months are so strange e.g. _Sept_ -ember is the 9th month). But the way the Romans kept the calendar in line with the seasons was by inserting an extra month every once in a while. The problem was that the length of a consulship was a _calendar year_ which meant that the people deciding whether or not there was an extra month did so more on the basis of whether or not their allies were in power than on the basis of keeping the calendar in line with the solar year. By 46 BCE this was an absolute mess, so Caesar just removed the lunar element entirely. This is, btw, not when Quintilis and Sextilis were renamed to July and August. That happened later, after Julius' death and during the reign of Augustus respectively. Various other Roman Emperors also tried to get months named after them (e.g. 'Neronius' instead of April) but it never stuck. The real mystery of the Roman Calender to me though, is why they named half their months after gods and then just... gave up?? and named them "Month 5" "Month 6" etc. That's just lazy.

The Roman Calendar adjustments being used Solely when it was Politically convenient is one of the pettiest, Potentially Volatile Strategic Mindfucks in classical history. Caesar crossed the Adriatic sea to challenge Pompey during the Roman Civil War by realizing that the calendar hadn't been adjusted in 5 years; therefore, when Pompey thought it was December, it was still Mid-Fall, which made the surprise crossing easy.

@@ericsmith1792 I assume you mean proof that the Roman's had a 12 month calendar by the time of Julius Caesar, and not just that they had one at some point. Because the source for the latter is just... the calendar. We use the Roman calendar today (with some minor adjustments). It has the same 12 months. As for that the Romans had a 12 month calendar at the time of the Julian reforms, that is well attested. I can't link to sources but there's always Wikipedia. It's not a great source but points you in the direction of better ones. The 'standard' story goes that the Romans used to have a 10 month lunar calendar (with 30-ish day months) established by the founder Romulus which started in March. This was adjusted to a 12 month calendar by Rome's second king Numa (around 700-ish BCE) by adding January and February. At some point January became the first month. According to Livy this happened in 153 BCE [Livy, Periochae 47, 13-14]* But according to Ovid [Book II, right in the introduction]* it was done by the Decemvirs (long story, but around 450-ish BCE) and according to Plutarch [ch 18-19 of the "Life of Numa" in _Parallel Lives_ ]* Numa made January the first month from the start. I hope you see why I'm skeptical. All our evidence that the Romans _ever_ had a 10 month calender comes from people writing literally centuries after the fact. They disagree with each other about how the calendar was organized and when the changes were made. They attribute the calendar to legendary figures that never historically existed (I don't know how to tell you this, but there never was a Romulus). And the way they claim the calendar was organized makes little sense (according to some accounts, for instance, the extra 60 or so days in the year were just not on the calendar as an unorganized 'winter'. I'm sorry but I just flatly do not believe that). In general, our information about the Early Republic, never mind Rome's quasi mythical Kindom period, is _all_ like this. We should take everything about it with big heaping grains of salt. I can't _prove_ the Romans never had a 10 month calendar, but I think it was very unlikely. For an example of a scholar who shares my view, see "the Roman Calendar from Numa to Constantine" by Jörg Rüpke. *Hey look, a citation and everything!

Having festival days outside of the normal calendar days would be interesting there...It's something I've considered as part of a D&D game...the festival/holy days being ones that don't count for certain things save for as actually passing time. @@AzraelThanatos Just mentioning, the warhammer fantasy universe has a calendar of 400 days, were 4 of them are just days of celebration for the changes of season outside of any month, and there is two days dedicated to be scared of the moon that are also not part of any month, because they have a moon made of evil. One of those days starts the year and the other is in calendars put in the middle of the year but is literally random and can happen at any time. So there are some practical examples if you want to look them up. Somewhere online there is a calendar for an entire century of this kind of planet, both solar and lunar, if I am not wrong.

There's also the Roman system, pre-Julian calendar, where a job of the priesthood was to add the necessary extra days to a year. This lead, rather hilariously, to a moment where Julius Caesar made a crossing that his opponent believed he could never make because it was winter, when in fact Julius knew it was the middle of fall, he had just never had the opportunity to add those special holidays to the calendar since he was off doing... well, everything else.

Somewhat related fun fact: the moon actually does slow down our days. It is drifting away from us, due to complicated tidal effects, but that means that our own angular momentum goes into that drift, rather than us spinning, so in the distant past, the day was much shorter, iirc like 21 hours, and is constantly lengthening as it drifts further away.

You may find it interesting that The Forgotten Realms (D&D) uses a 360 day calendar with 5 holidays that add an extra day with a 6th holiday only celebrated every four years that, again, adds an extra day. In order to _really_ confuse people there are 12 months with 3 'weeks' that consist of 10 days each, which are predictably called tendays. It's just the right blend of silly and sensible that I could reasonably imagine an actual civilization would actually use it.

Spells and stories will make reference to a week/7 days, but while players can easily get a vibe when an NPC says something happened "three weeks ago", for traveling and keeping a calendar of an entire campaign, it can be difficult for a DM to have to learn or constantly reference another calendar. This book says it takes 3 months to cross the contintent, well how many days exactly is that? Well if you make every month the same length, weird things don't happen. What day of the week is it? Good news, you don't need to look at a calendar and it doesn't matter what year it is. Years are kept the same length as the real world so that when players are told something happened "20 years ago" they're imagining the same 20 years as the DM means. And since it's a fantasy world, a year can be exactly 365 days. Or if it isn't (a 6th monthless holiday wasnt in the sourcebook i first learned it from, so it must have been from an earlier edition) the leap day can account for it perfectly. And the moon cycle is exactly 30 days.

One thing I love about Egyptian mythology is that there isn't really a consistent timeline. In this myth, Thoth is older than Horus and Set, but in a manuscript from the 1100s BCE (if I remember correctly), he's their child. In that telling, Set accidentally swallows some of Horus's semen (how? I have no idea), and Thoth later emerges from Set's forehead, after which he mediates their fight. This is kind of a cool parallel with Athena, since they're both gods of wisdom born from another god's forehead. In other myths, he's sometimes described as being self created and then laying the egg that contains the universe, or "born of the lips of Ra".

Funnily enough, the days / months / years rabbithole turns into a proper rabbit warren when you consider that the length of a day (solar or sidereal) changes over the course of the year. Because Earth's orbit is an ellipse, not a circle, the Earth travels faster in some parts of its orbit than in others (it's faster around perigee, and slower around apogee). Hence, if you observe the position of the sun at the same time each day (time as measured by a clock, that is), the positions don't form a simple vertical line as we cycle through the seasons : it instead forms a figure-eight. This is the analemma.

You know my absolute favorite thing about Horus and Set; these two once seemed to have been the respective chief gods of Lower (North) and Upper (South) Egypt, and when the legendary king Narmer unified Egypt, his patron was Horus. So in a way, the mythical duel of Horus and Set with Set as the loser is a mythologization of this ancient war between Upper and Lower Egypt. On top of that, Set became a kind of patron and symbol of outsiders, which didn't help his New Kingdom and Hellenised portrayal as a purely evil being, rather than someone who has an important cosmic role as lord of the desert.

One or two Second Dynasty pharaohs had Set as their patron deity instead of Horus. You can see this in their naming conventions, where the usual "Horus name" is instead replaced by a "Set name". There's even one pharaoh (Khasekhemwy) that put both Horus and Set on top of the serekh symbol enclosing their name. This didn't last long though, and after that all pharaohs strictly had Horus names. So this definitely adds more evidence that there was a struggle between two different religious groups even after the official unification of Egypt, and that the Horus party eventually won out in the end.

@@ascendingfire8404 Set had a popularity really variable through the 3000 years of egyptian history, like he was an important figure in the protection of several dynasties, even though only a handful of pharaohs officially took Set's names. All the Ramessides liked Set for example, and Ramessou II' father was caled Sethi, which means "born from Set". And even in myths, Seth is often portrayed as a defendor of Ra on his journey through the underworld, so he's not a super evil bad guy ^^

Fun fact: when Julius Caesar used the Egyptian calender as the basis for reforming the Roman calendar, those extra days were added to the end of some months (mostly every other month, and enough to offset February having only 28 days as well since February was considered an unlucky month). This is why some months have 31 days. The French Republican calendar also tried to do the whole 5 extra days that don't belong to any month thing as well. We should give it another try.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, consider a 28 day, 13 month calendar. Each month begins on a Sunday and ends on a Saturday and is always the same length. You can say "plan for the 12th" and it will always be a Friday, any month, any year. However, there's a single day left out of it, New Years Day. It's not a weekend or weekday, it's special and leap years give you two days off work. This solves a lot of my issues with calendar (besides maybe names), and makes planning for holidays really easy unless you still follow the moon and your name is Easter.

Meanwhile, the Roman lunar calendar was so bad that Julius Caesar basically weaponized it in the civil wars. As Pontifex Maximumus he was in charge of correcting the calendar so that it lined up with the seasons, and just didn't one year so that his enemies would stop blockading the strait between Italy and Greece during what they thought was winter (a bad time for sailing) when it was actually still autumn, allowing him to sneak a good chunk of his army into Greece before the Pompeians realized they'd been had. After the civil war, Caesar made a new calendar based off the Egyptian one.

I spent way too long trying to figure out the hieroglyphs at 3:50 😅 From what I could find, the first line is the letters I and M followed by the symbol meaning "not" or "do not" The second line is just the hieroglyph for "birth" or "born" And the third line means "360 days" (literally, the sun disc as a determinative referring to time, followed by the numbers 300 and 60) So while I'm not sure about the I and M, I can safely say that Red definitely did her research - more research than I did, since I'm just using Wikipedia. 😆

The reason Ra made the rule was because, from the version I remember, a voice (unidentified so maybe a primordial god) proclaimed to all the gods including Ra that a child of Newt would be the new king. This was Osiris. Red ranting about calendar rounding problems is ME. The fact that we have to adjust our calendars to properly align with the celestial bodies annoys me more than if probably should.

@@universe1879 That's okay, the Earth's rotation is gradually slowing (overall) so days are also getting longer (on average).
