It's worth to note that "discover" can be relative. Sure, he was not the very first person to discover the Americas, but he did discover it for the rest of Europe as it was unknown to them. You could also say that the people living there did not discover the Americas but their ancestors, and they were just born in it. And Leifur Eiríksson discovered it for Greenland, which then became a forgotten information as the settlement in modern-day Newfoundland was abandoned.
