The acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has assumed office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
His arrival comes a day after he was decorated by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima as the 22nd IGP of the Nigeria Police Force.

As a soon to retire police officer ( almost 30 years of service) in the USA, I very much liked what he was saying about his ideas of professional policing. It almost mimics the American style. But this is Nigeria. Let’s hope that his ideas will be fruitful. Very importantly, to deal effectively with the issue of corruption within the force MUST BE TO PAY THEM VERY WELL. At least, living wages and salaries. After this, their bars of expectation should be raised higher and they should be held fully accountable for any illegal acts that will tarnish the image of policing.

The biggest change i want to see would be the introduction of bodycam on all police officers and any police officer who engages with anyone without turning on his/her bodycam should be sanctioned. This would solve atleast 70% of the current problem we have with the police. Like brutality, bribery and anyone using polices officers as bodyguards and make sure these police officers are paid well with good insurance incase of injury or death while serving the country, there families should be taken good care of

If what this new IGP said is implemented, his name will be engraved as the only IGP that placed the Nigerian Police in the right direction. In majority of civilized countries, if the citizens have issues, they run to the Police for complaint and protection, but in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. All men and women police officers in Nigeria are people of high integrity. They're not different from what we have in the UK. In all human races, we do have one or two bad eggs. In the past, there were some UK police officers who were corrupt and racist. Nigerian police officers were not immune from it. Nigerian police force needs to be high trained from lower ranks up. Pay them good salaries to perform their duties. Like every citizen, police personnel lives are at in the line of duty. They should be professional and respect the uniform. Provide them incentives to perform their duties and upgrade police station environment and digital it for efficiency.
