I'm nodding my head a lot as you're talking. Congratulations for figuring out a lot of stuff that took me 2 years at my dream college and top-rated engineering school to figure out! What's the number one thing I learned in college? "How to cope with failure!" College was some of the best and also worst time of my life. I was a straight-A honor student in high school...and early in my college career had to retake a lot of classes because my grade wasn't good enough to meet the prerequisite to move on to the next level...which costed me a lot of time and tuition money. I almost got the boot, but I found a dean who had my back and gave me time to get it together. Setting my expectations to "C's get degrees" helped me do better in my classes. Setting my bar low to "barely passing" and being excited about a B- was better than feeling so dejected. stressed and overwhelmed that I would eventually get a D (or worse) and have to retake the class. I also figured out sometimes it's just not possible to do all the work...so I would put together all my syllabi in a spreadsheet and look at what the percentages were worth. What is more important--studying for an exam worth 20% of my grade in Class A or one homework assignment out of 20 assignments that collectively are worth 15% of my grade in Class B? Obviously studying for the exam, but have you ever looked at your class syllabus since the first day? It might be tempting to work on the assignment instead because finishing a set of homework questions is more tangible than general "studying" for an exam. The worst part about college was always having this cloud over your head of "I could be/should be studying." As a professional in the "real world," I can clock out at 5:30pm on Friday and just forget about working for the next two days. Looking back, doing whatever it took to get my "golden piece of paper" (although it might not have felt like it at graduation) was worth it in the long-run. Being a full-time professional has its own struggles and set-backs, but I'll take it over the overwhelming pressure I faced in college. Although it's offset by a mountain of college debt, I make a disgusting amount of money as an engineer for my age, and I'm sure in your degree, you will too someday. Resources to give you the freedom to do whatever you want with your free time. You are very self-aware and a much better student than I was...just keep telling yourself, you will get through this. "The moment you want to quit is the moment you need to keep moving forward."

Wow, thank you so much for this comment - it means a lot to me and hearing your journey and eventual success is really inspirational! Congrats on making it through all the struggles and obstacles of college - I'm so glad that everything worked out and that you're doing so well now. I definitely relate a lot to your description of your college experience, and it's reassuring to hear about what the professional world is like compared to being in school 😅Thank you so much for the encouragement and wisdom/perspective!! I really appreciate you sharing your story with me (I've re-read your comment several times at this point haha :))

currently a senior in HS planning on majoring in CS. I totally feel you with the whole existential crisis situation and worrying about choosing the right major for my life goals. I'd love to hear more about your goals and dreams. It makes me happy to know that all CS majors aren't super one dimensional with their goals :)

aw i’m glad you found this insightful in some way! for me i think i’m interested in both tech and humanities and it would be interesting to find a career path or future plan that somehow bridges the gap between arts and STEM - but i’m not quite sure yet how to go about that exactly haha. good luck with cs and college!!

Hey, stranger here! Your nostalgia song list video made me come across this video and I CANNOT RELATE MORE... the situation is different in many ways, like in my case I continued to a graduate course straight after graduating from my bachelor's, in a foreign country, a more prestigious institute, and the whole transition shocked me... just like you I also were comfortable with how I manage my time and studies from before, unprepared for what graduate courses and research would look like, and yadda yadda yadda mental breakdowns, self-comparing to other people, totally similar to what you went through... I even had to go to the psychiatrist and was prescribed medication for it. And finding your video really helped me feel better and that yes I might not have had a great start, but I am willing to get better and learn from this facing the future. I am still recovering but I'll make sure I can manage. Anyways, I'm basically repeating the things you've said in the vid but I want to honestly appreciate you for being open and sharing your experience! I wish you the best in your studies! Please make sure to always have your health come first! Best of luck! :D

ur so insightful i love this video. ucla is my dream school too and it was rly nice seeing this video and realizing that not every college experience is like it is in the movies like the best years of ur life but instead its just like any other period in life, a time to make mistakes and learn and figure out yourself. im in 8th grade rn and rly anxious about my future but im trying to remind myself it will be alright no matter what happens bc its all a journey and i should embrace the process. gl for second semester :)

Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you were able to get some value out of my thoughts!! I relate so much to this video. I started studying computer science in college this year and I experienced a lot of the stuff that you talk about. The first semester has been really hard. Especially the high workload compared to high school, combined with not being able to meet people irl because of the pandemic. But it's nice to see that i'm not alone in this and that other people go through similar experiences.

Yess first term has definitely been a struggle, and CS is no easy task!! I feel you so much on the workload and struggles of doing everything virtually instead of in person :') but hopefully things get better from here on out. Wishing you the best of luck with the new semester and beyond, we got this :))
