I can tell you, the only way inflation happens is not because this years trees grow more of it, but a single bureaucrat that virtually or physically throw on the money printers to put more money into circulation. People behave like inflation is some random thing like the weather. Which is simply not true, it does not by accident.

I would have explained that even though inflation is an increase in the money supply, its important to grasp that how the money is deployed determines CPI and asset inflation. For example, if foreigners purchase that debt and sit on it, then that won't automatically increase the price level. But if that debt is then used as collateral to purchase property or equity that would raise the cost of those assets.

Again and again, The Fed cannot unilaterally raise or lower interest rates. Interest rates (dependent variables) result from exchanges of current dollars for future dollars ( both independent variables).

I think that's why the term targeting* of interest rates was used ad nauseum instead of setting interest rates. Also the fed creates current dollars to buy debt and the federal government can issue more debt/future dollars and have the fed pay the debt with future money too... I might be misunderstanding...

@@Castle3179 Saying something "ad nauseum" prevents the misconceptions developed by listener. It makes people consider the changes in the structure of the banking system. The dollars created by the Fed do not (cannot) act as money. Regulation prohibits private parties from having accounts at The Fed. Again, in spite of what you and I were taught, The Fed does not create "money." They only create reserve dollars, which private citizen cannot own. Careful of popular misconceptions, e.g. we do not have a democracy in this country.

Good 2% inflation (which compounds) means you lose 25% of the value of every dollar every decade.
