Single cylinder, constant misfire. Is it spark, fuel or compression? This is all covered in this video and can be applied to every car on the road, regardless of the model year.

I am glad to see you teach the tried and true ways of diag that has been around as long as auto repair but I also know that these days more costly and technical test procedures are also required. Starting off with the simple methods is usually the best way. Before fuel injection it was very seldom a single cylinder miss could be attributed to the fuel system but now days it could be either fuel, ign, or compression. I started in the days of ign points and was there for the dreaded switch to electronic ign systems and I have always used a test light for cylinder shorting and to see primary operation. BUT, when I started testing CD (capacitive discharge) ign systems I would blow bulbs immediately. The stator and switch box (module) on a Mercury outboard puts out from 150 to approx 300 V as read on the DVA (direct voltage adapter) to the coil used to test Mercury ign systems. Evinrude calls it a peak reading volt meter but they do the same thing. The CD ign fires on the voltage rise of the coil instead of the fall and I guess more output amperage and voltage but on a conventional ign system weather points or electronic learning to use the test light is the quickest and very accurate way to do preliminary ign system tests.

That's a great point about how misfire counters can't be perfect witnesses to which cylinder is misfiring. I loved your explanation of how the computer adds fuel to the entire bank when it finds too much downstream oxygen, not recognizing it is a single lean cylinder problem. I'm guessing it might do that with any cause of a single cylinder misfire where unburned oxygen finds its way downstream?

I need me some ScannerDanner help! have a challenging issue with my 2008 Audi S5 4.2 (186,000 km) that I hope you can help with. About 1-2 days after washing the engine(12 weeks ago now), I started experiencing misfires in cylinder 2, but only under load, specifically when hitting around 3500+ RPM with about 20-30% throttle. The car runs smoothly without misfires when driven gently without pushing it over 20-30% Here’s what I’ve done so far: Replaced all spark plugs and coils Changed the injector in cylinder 2 Performed an oil service and installed a new battery Replaced the engine mount on the driver's side Conducted a compression test which showed good results Despite these changes, the misfire in cylinder 2 persists. I even tried relocating the plugs and coils, but the problem remains. Any insights or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated!
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 14 күн бұрын
You've learned a lesson on why I NEVER wash an engine bay. We really need to get a lab scope on the #2 ignition coil and the #2 injector. Water intrusion is suspect for sure. I'm thinking you have a voltage drop, maybe on the ignition supply circuit for the #2 coil and your spark is weak because of it, which could lead to high rpm misfiring. That is a stretch but without some scope readings, I'm just guessing

I found there way of teaching very helpful to the whole class. One of them had the love for Digital Electronics. Which I and the majority of the class caught on. So in my College years taking Automotive Service Management. When the instructor was at the stage of teaching electronics it was like a refresher course. So in closing I can see where your numbers are spot on. Thanks for your opinion.

the injector was unplugged, what unburned fuel? But no, even with an ignition misfire, it will drive the O2 lean from the unburned oxygen, doesn't matter if there is unburned fuel too (though an injector not firing and an ignition misfire will look different on your fuel trims but they will still both be positive)

Good question! I didn't have it with me and my Verus would have worked too but it was glitching out on me, so no reason to get on high tech on a constant misfire. I almost never do on these. And honestly this is faster than setting up the scope and getting good secondary ignition captures anyway 😉
@johnnytacokleinschmidt515
@johnnytacokleinschmidt515 Ай бұрын
Lean has higher ionization voltage and shorter burn time. You probably could have seen that and known there was compression pressure and good secondary integrity. You'll wind up in the same place. If you're quick with the scope then you do that. If not and parts are easily accessible I greatly prefer substitution or switching with non-companion cylinders. He could have done all of that in under ten minutes. If he found the problem he would have the fix at hand. Count that against the scope hook-up and verification step that's still required. I like scopes myself. Sun, Snap-on Counselor 1, 2, Edge, Vantage, the computer based one. I'm an electronic hobbyist so my bench scopes have hung out in the shop with me on occasion.

on a car that age with newer looking wires(signs of tinkering), I would have went straight for the spark plugs, without other fiddling, but of course I'd have still done all the other fiddling afterwards to be sure that was all. that plug looked awfully new and shiny, like someone just changed them and stabbed it into dirty-oil putting it down the long valve cover tube.

Anything early obd 2, I never trust fault codes when diagnosing a misfire. Way too easy to be mislead, as the misfire counters still weren’t up to snuff back then. Gotta make sure to cover your bases. Good job

I'm not into bonding, and damn sure ain't into mega bonding, but I still love u man! As far as the egr code, I would be quite confident to throw a VVT sol. for the EGR. Best to get at it underneath the vehicle. PITA first 2-3 you do, but cake afterwards. Knock sensor might not be a gimmie. Have had a bad ecu make me a parts changer. Once code popped it went into limp mode. Newer Corolla tho. Same engine platform. You rock. Love your videos. Better tech than I am. kzbin.infozk7Eby4Vzgs
