Lots of items like the mushrooms and English cucumbers will arrive to them already in packaging. Also just because you see stuff w/o packaging at a grocery that doesn't mean it didn't arrive in packaging. Go take a look in grocery store dumpsters you'll see an enormous amount of packaging and it rarely gets recycled.

@ArmchairChef3 жыл бұрын
i have been getting imperfect foods for a few months now. first order came with a bunch of flowers for free. the 2nd box came with sausage that i didn't order and would never order and it was free but i cannot eat it. none of the other boxes came with anything i didn't order. I like the fact i can buy only what i can eat in a weeks period of time since im a household of 1 and can control how large the quantity of food is sent. Last week i purchased salmon and veggies to roast. this week i got cod and veggies for salads. you can prechoose "packages" to be put in your cart because if its in your cart you pretty much WILL get it unless something happens to the supplier. One week i planned on Fajitas with skirt steak and the skirt steak was cancelled but i got all the other items. I would not have ordered them if i had know i wouldn't have gotten the beef. That was a problem. I'm in Utah, our main distribution is in California, the boxes are sent to a warehouse here in Lehi where the Independent GIG drivers pick up their orders for the DAY and deliver them to our door. I have chosen to get text notifications when it's on the way and delivered. the personal referrals are now $20 for credit on their IF order. my orders range from $16 to $28 and i find the shipping of $4.99 very reasonable. I can also skip any weeks i want if i don't need food or would be on vacation and not home. only 1 time so far during those big snow storms was a weekly order completely cancelled and i was never charged for the food. sometimes my orders will sit at my door for up to 6 hours and they are still perfectly cold. i love those silver bags and they work great if i go to the store i can line my reusable bag for my frozen/cold foods. I hope you don't mind me sharing my experience, I'm very happy with Imperfect Foods. and i subscribed to your channel so i can see more of what you do. I like how you communicate so well.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience here! I think that it could help others choose what's best for them. You got more freebies than I did! I know you didn't eat the sausage, but sometimes it's nice to get hooked up lol. I like that you reuse the insulated liners too. That's such a good idea. Thanks for the sweet notes and see you around!

FYI the imperfect insulation and box size changes are because they switched from a fedex delivery to imperfect delivery drivers in your area. Many areas still get delivered by fedex

I like Misfits market but you have to know what to purchase. Also I would never purchase lettuce items although I do always try to get collard greens, kale, swiss chard, etc because they handle the two to three day shipment better. Items like eggplant usually come bad on one side which means half is unusable and some vegetables come to you needing to be cooked right away. The potatoes are usually stabbed on one side so partially unusable. I've not been happy with some of the fruit choices that were not ripening properly and never got sweet. Like mangoes twice that were hard as a rock and green yet black inside. The good thing is they do give you a credit towards your next order if you contact them. Personally I would not purchase anything off their menu of items past the produce because I don't think their prices are very good on them which is how they make their extra money. Also it's important to know how much your organic produce costs at your local market to make sure that you are purchasing things that you can't get cheaper when you break down the cost of the box versus buying at your own market. I try to get things that I can't get at my market since I try to only eat organic and my market is limited on organic produce. Misfits is no longer using that plastic insulation they are using a paper one now. Also I have not been getting any of those plastic containers but instead they have been sending them in egg crate type paper ones. Your box is definitely bigger than mine. I get the smaller box for one to two people so I don't get the quantity of produce that you do. If I order potatoes I will typically only get two small potatoes. The good thing about them is that unlike the other online market choices they are fully organic and have enabled me to save seeds from things like the winter squashes and fruit etc.
@CocoShin3 жыл бұрын
I wonder how much the packaging and quantity varies by region. It’s likely that our shipments were packed in different warehouses, so that could account for some differences. The worst experience I had was a peach that had already gone bad by the time it had arrived at my door, but it was a hot southern summer, and I nothing like that happened once the weather cooled down. I contacted them about it and they made it up to me. Overall, I had a really good experience with them and I agree, it’s great that Misfits is all organic!

Love all the plants in your dining room! That baby delicata is too cute🤣and the green grapefruit looks so good! Love the overview you gave. I think I've been skeptical about trying a service like this because of the packaging and shipping waste/emissions, but I also like that they target food waste. Pretty sure I'll eventually try Misfits rather than Imperfect Foods after hearing your synopsis!

Yeah, I figure that there are probably not much more emissions than if I drive to the grocery store to get the stuff. The packaging does bother me though... There use to be box (and probably ice pack) returns before covid. But things have changed. :( I do hope you try Misfits (or any of them, really) because I forgot to mention this in the video, but it's a great way to try new things and eat lots of produce since it comes automatically to your house! Purple fingerling potatoes? What a weird name! Those are native to Okinawa so we just call them potatoes here haha. Their native name is "beni imo" and I LOVE them sweet or savory. They actually bake them into a lot of desserts like tarts. This video was so cool since I have never had a service like this so it was cool to see how a few of them worked! I had no idea you could get non-produce from them!! What makes them misfits? Damaged or close to expiring? Either way I'm glad they're not being sent to landfill!
@CocoShin4 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah that's what they were labeled as. They were really good! Most of the produce I get from these boxes is totally normal. Some things have blemishes (like that apple) some are a little weirdly shaped (like some of those beni omo) or oddly big or small (like the little delicata or the giant sweet potato.) After spending a few years abroad myself, I was surprised when I got back how common stuff like this had become. The future is here!

In my experience, the selection doesn’t change that much depending on the time of the month. Try making your selections as soon as possible before certain items sell out or go with imperfect foods, which I think has a wider selection and more flexibility when you are ordering.

@CocoShin3 жыл бұрын
You are so kind, Claire! Lori Evans wrote a pretty detailed review in another comment and it sounds like she is only ordering for herself. In my experience, canceling and skipping is really easy. You just have to remember to do it before yoir order becomes final just a couple days before delivery. It's pretty easy to remember because you get regular emails to remind you to pick stuff for your boxes anyway. Hope it works for you!
@tbjorn73743 жыл бұрын
Ok all the packaging is recyclable but how much fuel is being used to get the product to you?
@CocoShin3 жыл бұрын
Good question. It is said that the delivery model actually saves emissions because there is just one truck driving around dropping boxes off instead of individual people going to the store to pick up their food. It's always best to shop local whenever possible to reduce emissions and support the local economy though.

While the concept is noble, I had to end my account with both Misfits and the newly acquired Imperfect Foods. Why? Imperfect and now Misfits through their warehouse has a VERY POOR track record in packing goods safely and properly. Why use insulated bags if the packers are TOO LAZY to seal them? Makes for food safety of perishable items questionable.

Sustainable packaging is not just for food. If we don't want to live on a trash-filled planet, we should have higher expectations for all of the companies we support to have their products package free when possible or in low impact packaging if necessary. Why don't you eat garlic?
@CocoShin3 жыл бұрын
I initially quit them to improve my meditation practice. Onions and garlic can give you some sensations in your body after you eat them, and it's better to try to focus on subtler sensations. I've also heard it said that garlic has medicinal properties, but they are diminished if you are eating it constantly. After a while not eating them, their flavors become very strong, and I generally avoid them for that reason now. It's hard to avoid them in prepared foods though, so I still have them from time to time.
@Coincidence_Theorist2 жыл бұрын
@@CocoShin so youre saving them for medicinal value? Which they do in fact organically contain.

@@Coincidence_Theorist yeah, I would eat it more intentionally if I thought I needed it for medicinal purposes. My understanding is the medicinal value is greater when you’re only eating it when you need to.

Thanks for sharing! I totally feel that. At the end of the day, it’s all about meeting our basic needs (food) in a way that is sustainable and works for us. Larger corporations definitely bear the brunt of the responsibility for plastic pollution, which is why I also make a lot of content about activism. There are a lot of considerations to make for a sustainable lifestyle and also lots of actions people can take. Considering the sustainability of one’s food packaging is just one of them. ♥️
