Keep your levels in your DAW around -18, that equals 0DB ( in the analog world). Everything will sound better with your levels hovering around there. If you cant hear it, turn your monitors up, not the input,

HammerDimension I apologise, my comment might have looked genuine to somebody who hasn't seen Steve Terreberry's "how to be djent". And even so, it's no more of an actual guitar than any 7 or 8 string guitar. By your logic, the only true guitar is the original form, which only had one string.
@True_Necroholic
@True_Necroholic 10 жыл бұрын
No, by my logic a guitar has 6 strings, that is what a normal guitar has and so what I'm referring to as an "actual" guitar, and I'm simply making fun of extended range guitars since they have exploded in popularity in the last few years even though they are largely unnecessary (in the sense that most people aren't really utilizing them fully). Just poking fun though, I'm not against them. Also I've never heard of a guitar having only 1 string at any point. The original "guitar" had multiple strings. Perhaps you are thinking of some older chordophone that predates the guitar.

***** The scale length for extended range guitars is larger due to the fact that regular 6 strings cannot produce the proper frequencies extended ranges can. So just drop tuning a 6 does not work, if you are going to talk in a technical aspect.

The Axe FX has stereo FX, (modulations, reverbs and delays). He's no using any FX, so he's just tracking one of the inputs. That's why you only see one track being recorded in Cubase

So here's an inexpensive interface with super expensive everything else haha all jokes aside, this is great advice for those starting with home recording guitars. Never really did any quad tracking. It always seems like way too much guitar but then again most of my music uses keyboards as well which take up a lot of space in the mix. Might give it another shot though

Honestly, for instrument direct in and soft-amps the interface doesn't make a huge difference at all. When you are tracking multiple channels, with high dollar mics, then the cheap preamps and internals start to show their color.

@stormyandcold 10 жыл бұрын
The previous suggestions are all software vst plugins apart from Digitech GNX which is an external fx box. Guitar Rig 5 and Amplitube 3 are really good starting points if you're a beginner. The main battles you will come across is the quality of D.I. and guitar you have. Use a weak D.I. and cheapo guitar and these vsts will sound thin and poor. On the otherhand with a decent D.I. and quality guitar most people couldn't tell it's not a real amp. There is quite a lot of difference imho between using quality gear aswell like RME babyface vs Digidesign 003R via PRS S2 guitar. The 003R instrument D.I. makes all vst virtual amps sound awesome while Babyface is only adequate in comparison.

enny_tv Well, $50 more, but yeah you're right. The 2i4 is the lowest level Scarlet interface that does stereo monitoring. However most beginners wind up choosing the Solo or in this case the 2i2 because Misha did a video with it, and wind up getting screwed.

Jacob Zacharia Yeah at least, if you want stereo monitoring. I don't know how much you're willing to spend or what other kind of gear you have in your setup though. You'll have to check everything as far as inputs and outputs on your gear and see what has the correct I/O for you as far as cables and jacks and stuff. The next two from Focusrite are the 2i4 and 6i6 which have different routing options. I'm not too familiar with that other brands bring to the table though.

It's most likely as he's demoing/reviewing that piece of equipment. In other videos you can see he's got much fancier interfaces. Not only that ^^^ But, sending the Axe FX through an additional preamp makes the signal a little more clean. Also, it's probably a little easier the way he has it set up, because if he goes to record vocals or anything that cannot be recorded with the Axe FX, his IO is already set up and he doesn't have to go through the hassle of changing the playback engine and such.

I've been using an AMT E1 pedal going into the 1/4" input, but with the input set to instrument instead of line. I'm having to run the gain really low on the channel to avoid clipping, would running it as a line input make things easier?

Yeah but my question is, with this variety of music, what is the point of a bass when your guitar is that extended in range? using an extended range guitar, which he's doing, defies this statement. from my ears, the bass here just adds a tonal quality, not much if any low end.

Hey Misha, very nice video, I found it extremely helpful! I still have a hard time making a good source tone (I use POD HD). Do you have any general outlines, fx. always using two compressors, and a screamer, dual amps on low gain or anything like that? Or is it just a matter of trying out stuff? For me that could seem like a long process, given the amount of amps, mics and effects. Would be super cool getting some tips on making amazing tones :) Thanks again! Can't wait for PIII!

@Cynir thanks for answering. I think the people that did the setup for me (sweetwater) may have cut the nut too deep. I only get trouble when I tune the 6th string to A like he does here though, with drop C I have no buzz at all. Maybe Misha plays with high action who knows, but I don’t believe it because Jake said in the P3 documentary that they like super low action in the studio because they got a more spanky tone. But again, how would they manage fret buzz at such low tunnings

No reason whatsoever to record that hot with modern DAWs and 24 bit conversion. Zero. Go ahead, track at -18 and crank the track level or clip level, the noise will be negligible. Especially with a piece of gear like Axe FX, go line in, not through the pres. Then just track anywhere below clipping. Why get anywhere even close to 0?
@Paulhartrocks
@Paulhartrocks 10 жыл бұрын
Dude you need to do your homework as to why before you go posting that there is no reason for it. Digital needs to be tracked as hot as possible without clipping. Recording 101 basics. I've run a studio for 10 years and it's a rule to track hot.
@BestBeatsWithHooks

@lifesglorydead
@lifesglorydead 10 жыл бұрын
Paul Hart Paul, sorry but the "track digital as hot as possible" idea is simply a myth. 24-bit gives you 144dB of dynamic range- take advantage of it! Unless your system has a lot of self-noise (like in the days of tape), or you're using 16-bit (somewhat higher noise floor), your peaks should be hitting just under -6dB at the *absolute* hottest if you want to take advantage of all that headroom, though -18dB is much safer. Your digital system can't reproduce anything over 0, there's no need to go anywhere near there. And good Lord, all this withing even mentioning intersample peaks, which present their own myriad of reasons to keep your tracking levels low.
@LaminarSound
@LaminarSound 10 жыл бұрын
Paul, that's pretty amazing for you to make that statement, and then admit to running a studio for ten years. smdh... Like these gentlemen said, TAPE requires as hot a signal as possible because of tape hiss and overall high noise floor. Digital does NOT. Slamming the converters does absolutely NOTHING to your sound, however, clipping destroys it. Literally, it cuts off the waveform. Even in 16 bit digital, the noise floor is MUCH higher than the best tape recordings from the mid 90s. I don't mean to be an ass, but it seems that you're the one who hasn't done his homework. I can recommend a few good articles on digital theory/samplerate theory and overall knowledge of digital conversion if you like...

Dont want to be a dick here, but the recording method he described is entirely wrong for digital recording. For analog recording, that would be correct because you are trying to overcome the noise floor. The noise floor is virtually non existent with his setup and in the digital domain in general. When recording into a DAW, you want to have MODERATE recording levels. The level into the interface doesnt need to be that high, and in the DAW itself, you definitely do not want levels that high or you will quickly run out of headroom when you start adding tracks and plugins, which will cause digital clipping (above 0.0 on your track and master level meters). Digital clipping sounds god awful and should be avoided at all costs. An input level of -18 is a good place to shoot for if you will have alot of tracks and plugins, -12 for fewer tracks and plugs. You should be no more than -6 on the Master level meter so you have enough headroom for mastering. The cumulative effect of adding tracks and plugins will keep pushing your Master level up until it clips, which will not take long if all your tracks are recorded as he described. Analog and digital recording techniques are quite different.
@brianpatrick6102

@TruthSurge 8 жыл бұрын
+brian patrick "The level into the interface doesnt need to be that high, and in the DAW itself, you definitely do not want levels that high or you will quickly run out of headroom when you start adding tracks and plugins, " Wrong. Tracking levels should be as he described. You minimize the noise floor by keeping your levels as loud as they can be WITHOUT clipping during the loudest parts. Digital, analog, it's just how you record and how every professional records. THEN, when you MIX, you turn your track levels down and then bring them up so that the sum does not clip the master stereo outputs. "Analog and digital recording techniques are quite different." Not really.
@brianpatrick6102

@TruthSurge
@TruthSurge 8 жыл бұрын
+brian patrick I see you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep13/articles/level-headed.htm That article explains it pretty clearly. Perhaps even you could understand it. Digital does not equal noiseless. Thus, it IS important to understand how gain works and the best ways to optimize it during recording and mixing. I don't expect you to read the article, if your comment is any indication.
@TruthSurge
@TruthSurge 8 жыл бұрын
+brian patrick You might think that this line from the article refutes my claim "Digital recordings at 24-bit resolution offer a greater dynamic range than most users need - ie. the digital system's noise floor is so far below the wanted signal that you just don't need to think about it any more." But it corroborates the claim that there IS still a noise floor in the digital domain and depending on WHAT you are using, you'll get more or less noise. The POINT is that you SHOULD use an appropriate level of gain during recording, not something crazy high or low. That is all. Amps have a unity gain for a reason. 0 db. That's your ceiling. So, why not use it? Why record at a low signal then try to push that up in the mix? that's just stupid.

Great video. One thing that I would like to point out is that you can just record one track and duplicate it for the 2nd stereo track. If you pan one hard left, and the other hard right, then tweak the EQ of the 2nd track slightly, and add about 10ms of delay to it, it is a nice alternative to having to re-record the track all over again to fatten up the guitar sound. Also, what is the drum and bass source you're using? VST instrument, or live drums? They sound really good.
@Amrovia
@Amrovia 10 жыл бұрын
Cool video and good tips Misha. Just a tip though... you are recording at 24 bit and not 16 bit. So you have huge headroom and don't need to record super-hot and almost clipping to get a good signal-to-noise ratio (this is an old method from the 16bit era). In fact, it's often better to record at more relaxed levels for good gain structure in your mix, especially since you are quad tracking and will probably turn down the faders on the guitars quite a bit anyway. Cheers
