I find doing a palm muted 12th fret power chord instead of open (in dropped tunings) gives the biggest clipping and chunkiest bass response, so I usually use that for setting my input levels properly.

Damn dude the difference between double and quad tracked is insane. Not a huge difference but definitely effective. Also i must say that your talent is apparent from how easily you pulled of those double tracks with perfection. People take note, you cant polish a turd if the performance isn't up to scratch, no amount of gear will help you there.

So here's an inexpensive interface with super expensive everything else haha all jokes aside, this is great advice for those starting with home recording guitars. Never really did any quad tracking. It always seems like way too much guitar but then again most of my music uses keyboards as well which take up a lot of space in the mix. Might give it another shot though
@jordankrecek5947

Honestly, for instrument direct in and soft-amps the interface doesn't make a huge difference at all. When you are tracking multiple channels, with high dollar mics, then the cheap preamps and internals start to show their color.

Not only that ^^^ But, sending the Axe FX through an additional preamp makes the signal a little more clean. Also, it's probably a little easier the way he has it set up, because if he goes to record vocals or anything that cannot be recorded with the Axe FX, his IO is already set up and he doesn't have to go through the hassle of changing the playback engine and such.

Misha Mansoor I have one of the 2i2 interfaces and was wondering if you could answer this for me. I've been using an AMT E1 pedal going into the 1/4" input, but with the input set to instrument instead of line. I'm having to run the gain really low on the channel to avoid clipping, would running it as a line input make things easier?
@SkywayAvenueUK
@SkywayAvenueUK 10 жыл бұрын
Another option for double tracking, if you have the riff the same for two bars, play it on one track, cut in half, stick that second half on another track and then you've got your double. Guitars tend to go out of tune in small increments quickly but when you add 4 guitars, for example, together, it'll give you a fair few phase issues. One thing he hasn't picked up on here is tracking chord by chord. Tune your guitar to the chord you're playing, so for example, hold your A5 barre chord, hit each string and tune the E string TO that root A note - obviously as you go up the neck, the intonation will start to swag, so this is why you would do this for huge numbers of trackings - track that chord, move on to the next one. It takes ages but I doubt you'd find many people in rock production doing otherwise nowadays.

@elliottm1234
@elliottm1234 10 жыл бұрын
It's most likely as he's demoing/reviewing that piece of equipment. In other videos you can see he's got much fancier interfaces. It also allows him to switch between monitoring the DAW output, and the straight interface output as he mentioned, which is not as easy to do on an AXE FX as far as I know.

Cool video and good tips Misha. Just a tip though... you are recording at 24 bit and not 16 bit. So you have huge headroom and don't need to record super-hot and almost clipping to get a good signal-to-noise ratio (this is an old method from the 16bit era). In fact, it's often better to record at more relaxed levels for good gain structure in your mix, especially since you are quad tracking and will probably turn down the faders on the guitars quite a bit anyway. Cheers

The previous suggestions are all software vst plugins apart from Digitech GNX which is an external fx box. Guitar Rig 5 and Amplitube 3 are really good starting points if you're a beginner. The main battles you will come across is the quality of D.I. and guitar you have. Use a weak D.I. and cheapo guitar and these vsts will sound thin and poor. On the otherhand with a decent D.I. and quality guitar most people couldn't tell it's not a real amp. There is quite a lot of difference imho between using quality gear aswell like RME babyface vs Digidesign 003R via PRS S2 guitar. The 003R instrument D.I. makes all vst virtual amps sound awesome while Babyface is only adequate in comparison.

Regarding the double tracked tone being duller part, usually what I do is for the sake of getting a tone, I monitor through the software(with a setting of as low latency as possible)first and pan it hard left/right, then play alone and compare with some commercial CD tone(especially those rhythm parts where only one guitar is playing) to get an idea/reference of where my tone stands. Then tweak it from there. After that, switch back to optimized sample rate settings for CPU power and use direct monitoring for tracking.

HammerDimension I apologise, my comment might have looked genuine to somebody who hasn't seen Steve Terreberry's "how to be djent". And even so, it's no more of an actual guitar than any 7 or 8 string guitar. By your logic, the only true guitar is the original form, which only had one string.
@True_Necroholic
@True_Necroholic 10 жыл бұрын
No, by my logic a guitar has 6 strings, that is what a normal guitar has and so what I'm referring to as an "actual" guitar, and I'm simply making fun of extended range guitars since they have exploded in popularity in the last few years even though they are largely unnecessary (in the sense that most people aren't really utilizing them fully). Just poking fun though, I'm not against them. Also I've never heard of a guitar having only 1 string at any point. The original "guitar" had multiple strings. Perhaps you are thinking of some older chordophone that predates the guitar.

***** The scale length for extended range guitars is larger due to the fact that regular 6 strings cannot produce the proper frequencies extended ranges can. So just drop tuning a 6 does not work, if you are going to talk in a technical aspect.

Yeah but my question is, with this variety of music, what is the point of a bass when your guitar is that extended in range? using an extended range guitar, which he's doing, defies this statement. from my ears, the bass here just adds a tonal quality, not much if any low end.

Hey Misha, very nice video, I found it extremely helpful! I still have a hard time making a good source tone (I use POD HD). Do you have any general outlines, fx. always using two compressors, and a screamer, dual amps on low gain or anything like that? Or is it just a matter of trying out stuff? For me that could seem like a long process, given the amount of amps, mics and effects. Would be super cool getting some tips on making amazing tones :) Thanks again! Can't wait for PIII!

The Axe FX has stereo FX, (modulations, reverbs and delays). He's no using any FX, so he's just tracking one of the inputs. That's why you only see one track being recorded in Cubase

6:30, yes, you actually can use one track and simulate a 2nd performance. It just takes some effects and a little knowledge. You copy the track, you PITCH it up AND down using a vibrato effect going SLOWLY so that the tuning of the 2nd track is always JUST a hair high then in tune then a hair low and you do that so you don't get phasing because you ALSO will adjust the clip so the 2nd track is just a hair later or earlier and then run the 2nd track with a hair diff eq and if using amp sim, you can use a diff speaker cab whatever. Pan then hard left/right or 80% L/R. Doing all this will keep it from going mono by NOT being the same sound at the same time on both tracks. But for non-adlib stuff, you can just play it again on a 2nd track and get a more live feel. Solos... you can copy the track (so you don't have to relearn an ad lib solo) and do the doubling idea. Just my opinions.
@skyvader981
@skyvader981 8 жыл бұрын
depending on the riff I'm recording I will duplicate one track and zoom in closely and nudge the item over a few milliseconds behind the original track. not too much or else it sounds like a delay
@TruthSurge
@TruthSurge 8 жыл бұрын
Doing that will cause extreme phasing. Keeping that phase sound out ... you'd need to shift the pitch up and down continually or the timing continually. Just shifting it 10 ms or so will cause a lot of phase shift and some thinning of the sound.
@Electrundo
@Electrundo 4 жыл бұрын
Seems easier to just record a second take real quick.. Also less phasing issues.
@TruthSurge
@TruthSurge 4 жыл бұрын
@@Electrundo you can fix the phasing by adjusting the timing of track 2 (the dup track) AND by mucking with the pitch using a pitch shifter and just adjusting the pitch up and down in a sine wave fashion by like 7 or 8 cents so that the phase is never the same and thus, not really noticable. But it's never going to sound like real doubling. poor man's version BUT it's a tighter tracking and especially for ad lib since harder to learn something and track it tightly later. I do both. But I think real doubling sounds a bit fatter.

Actually, the signal coming from the guitar is loudest when strumming all the strings loudly, not a palm mute. Just run your guitar directly into any device that has an actual vu meter or good digital one and you can see this. So, he must have your axe fx going into that focusrite because the signal coming from the pickups will never be louder with 3 strings muted than with 6 strings fully vibrating. Point being, just be sure to check your levels at EACH junction (basically like he did) so that the signal does not clip but is as loud as it can be at its loudest point. Then for mixing, adjust to taste w/o clipping also.
@TruthSurge
@TruthSurge 8 жыл бұрын
Jack Anderson That's what I said when I said he MUST have his rig going guitar INTO Axe FX because otherwise guitar into PREAMP or recorder would not work that way. You strum more strings, you get a louder signal so you'd want to do just like he said anyway, make sure your loudest part of the song (not how loud you COULD make it by banging all the strings as loud as you could) doesn't clip. So... you are just agreeing with me. :) At least we won't have a silly YT argument lasting 50 posts and accomplishing nothing. :)

@crummockiphail9720
@crummockiphail9720 8 жыл бұрын
enny_tv Well, $50 more, but yeah you're right. The 2i4 is the lowest level Scarlet interface that does stereo monitoring. However most beginners wind up choosing the Solo or in this case the 2i2 because Misha did a video with it, and wind up getting screwed.
@jzdotexe

So I should definitely be grabbing the 2i4 then if I want a proper monitoring setup?
@crummockiphail9720
@crummockiphail9720 8 жыл бұрын
Jacob Zacharia Yeah at least, if you want stereo monitoring. I don't know how much you're willing to spend or what other kind of gear you have in your setup though. You'll have to check everything as far as inputs and outputs on your gear and see what has the correct I/O for you as far as cables and jacks and stuff. The next two from Focusrite are the 2i4 and 6i6 which have different routing options. I'm not too familiar with that other brands bring to the table though.
