Arsenal SLR104FR In Russian Plum: Best 5.45x39 AK-74 Of All Time? (Retrospective, 2019)

  Рет қаралды 18,000

Mishaco

5 жыл бұрын

Needing another 5.45x39mm range day, we grabbed a few different guns, including two Arsenal SLR104FR rifles. Jay's is in a modern configuration with all-black polymer furniture, while Misha's is wearing plum furniture and metal triangle folding buttstock from Soviet-Russia.
We dust both off and take them to the range for some casual fun.
The SLR-104FR is a true import; made in Bulgaria by Arsenal AD, and imported into the USA by Arsenal Inc. of Las Vegas, NV. With the exception of perhaps the SGL31, the 104FR is probably the best AK-74 type semi-auto to ever be offered on the American commercial/civilian market.

Im literally drooling looking at one for 1100 down in Texas. 104fr. 980 if your paying cash. They're not always there at the snap of a finger but 5.45s are definitely around at not insane prices. Im kicking myself in the ass for laughing at a gun shop a few years ago when they were 900-1000 and could be found at quiet a few gun stores.

$1100 for a 104fr??? That’s what they were going for 3 years ago, now they’re double if not triple that. Brand new people are asking $3,000 on GB. And yeah 5.45x39 is still cheap and plentiful even with the ammo crisis going on at the moment giving that the caliber isn’t very popular and only a slim number of gun owners own Ak74’s

Found a guy who was willing to build me a Bulgarian ak-74 kit. I'm waiting to get my hands on it and check the build. Heard he does good work so I'm hopeful. I didn't have the cash back when you posted your ak-74 import warning and by the time I did have the cash everyone was price gouging the 104's. I'm gonna put her through her paces and make sure my build is good once I get it. This guy puts on the original cyrillic markings as well which is one thing I wish they did to the factory Arsenal's. @StarCypher
@StarCypher 5 жыл бұрын
Warmachine_13 The factory milspec finish isn't that great to begin with and easily rubs off with basic solvents. You'd be better off having a pro beadblast and re-paint it. If you're not a fan of Cerakote, there's a company called Russian Paint and their blend closely mimics the factory Combloc finish. Just my 2 cents.
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 жыл бұрын
The factory finish is a layor of parkerizing/phosphating (looks grey so some don't realise its tehre) covered with a layor of black non-reflective paint. Unfortunately, when you strip your camo off, you'll take the OEM paint w/ too. However, you should be able to save the park underneath. So just repaint it. That's what happens in the Bulgarian military all the time...paint is just an outer layor to give protection. Its easy and cheap to refinish every couple years as needed to keep the metal itself from pitting.

I'm in no way speaking on behalf of Misha, but it really depends... The SGL, as you might know, is Russian and can't be imported anymore in the States. From a collector's standpoint, that would be best. The SLR would be a better choice if you actually plan to use it a bunch. If you aren't already invested in 5.45, then I suggest picking up an SLR-106 or having a 223 Saiga converted. Hope this helps.

@3of11
@3of11 5 жыл бұрын
Although I cant speak for him 100%, I bet the answer is "NO". Reason being he talked about in previous videos. 5.45 is essentially dead because no one else will adopt it militarily (why when you can just adopt or keep using 5.56). Some countries in fact want to get rid of it or have gotten out of it (Poland). Basically its "Russia only" and only continues to exist in Russia because the optics of them adopting 5.56 would be unacceptable (and switching would be expensive, big country problems). Same reason the Chinese have their "not-a-5.56-but-basically-5.56" 5.8 round. So with that no new military contracts really exists, Russia certainly isn't going to adopt a foreign weapons platform in THEIR caliber. With no military contracts in 5.45 no new guns will be developed or re-chambered for it. Civilian sales don't move the meter because the only country with a large enough civilan sales market to move the meter is US... and 5.45 isn't going anywhere in this country because the only reason 5.45 got popular here was dime-a-round ammo + 5.45 shooting ar uppers. That's long gone now so all that's left is the small esoteric 5.45 shooter market. Sort of like .30 carbine, 1 gun chambers it, no new military contracts remotely likely = this "permanent purgatory".
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 жыл бұрын
100%...well ok, 99% to be honest sure it'll never happen. First off, historically neither Israel or Czech have used/adopted 5.45x39. Second, they aren't going to tool up to make 5.45mm components, just to sell a couple hundred rifles to American civilians...and that would be the only market. There are practically no military customers looking to buy in the 5.45 caliber today. The only users left are Russia, North Korea, a few satellite states using old AK74s, and Romania who actually wants to switch to 5.56 as soon as its military budget allows for it.

I learned as a young man (of which I am no longer) that when it comes to guns and you think you want it, buy it now. It's like the Fram oil filter commercial - pay me now or pay me later. One example of my adventure: I had an opportunity to purchase a slightly used HK 91 for $450 in the 80's from a friend. Who knew a Republican president would ban imports right? Thirty plus years later I found one in excellent condition for $2600. Yes I bought it. OUCH!
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 жыл бұрын
And $2.6k is actually a very good price these days too. If it helps, use an inflation calculator sometime to see what $450 in '80s dollars is equal to today. Then you might not feel so bad.

And at the same time, people no longer budget or avoid buying everything they want. I know people that make well over $100,000 a year that basically live paycheck to paycheck. Of course they have a ton of stuff and take grand vacations every year, but as far as money in the bank or 0 card debt? Not so much. Then again, modern society doesn't encourage being financially conservative either. Kind of a chicken/egg situation.

The SGL 31-94/95 definitely doesn't have as nice rear trunnion work and rear rivets as the SLR104FR's do in my opinion but they are both amazing AK74's if I could only keep one it would be my 09 SGL31-94 though.

I know what you mean. The SGL's ear rivets aren't 'bad' but the 104's are just a tad better and don't have the receiver pushed in that little bit like you see on many 31-94/95s.

And if you read some other comments below, you'll hear the opposite. Fact is, canted SLR104FRs and Saigas came in. It happens with all factory built AKs. If i could only have 1? then yes it would be the SGL31 but since we aren't limited on the number of guns we have, its really nice to have both. Each does it a bit different and each represents a different model/variant.

You'd have to have a real professional do it , so you didn't damage anything, when pressed on and off the barrel. Don't forget the extra cleaning rod ring and bipod that also is pressed on. If it's all true Russian rpk parts and done professionally, I think it would be fine for holding value.

FM has a 16" barrel, RPK has 23". Also the FM has a custom FSB to let it fit the thicker barrel muzzel than on a standard RPK. TL,DR; it wouldn't work.

To be clear, i in no way blame 'Millenials' or even think they are a bad group. In fact, most I've met are more polite and more mature than folks older than them. However, i do think the current education system is rigged, insanely expensive, and ultimately of doobious worth. Its a real issue for the USA these days.

5.45 you were too beautiful for us. I allways have had a feeling the 7n6 ban and many other import bans have been supported by US manufacturers to protect domestic sales. Im happy I got my 104 a long time ago with a load of 7n6 and 2 unconverted saiga rifles in 5.45 when they used to be cheap. People used to complain so much about the paint on arsenals. Any idea when any imports from them will come in? Im also not intrested in any US made AK offerings, a reciver "made" in the US is the only domestic part I will have on an Ak. People used to say you could make an AK in a cave with a hammer but without a huge goverment millitary factory they are uneconomical to make where as ARs are much more suited to small scale production. I would be suprised if psa makes a 5.45, I'm pretty sure they would go for a 5.56. Since the only part arsenal would have to make differently compared to their 7.62 rifles would be the barrel its possible we could see them agine if there is enough demand. Im affraid with a lack of new rifles in 5.45 it will be hard to find ammo in the future.
