I don't hate these, but they are my least favorite AK pattern firearms that I do actually own as we move into the summer of 2021.
I pick one from each catagory:

The gateway AK for me is my 1997 purchase of a pre ban Polytech AK, 7.62, fixed wooden stock, stamped reciever.

Years ago I was issued a full auto Sig 552 for work. I bought a Sig 556 because it was as close as I could get to owning my duty rifle. Since that time Sig has stopped making or supporting the 556 platform. I’ve considered selling my 556 several times because if I break something it may be extremely difficult to fix it. I’m still hanging onto though mainly because it reminds me of my beloved 552 that I had to give back when I changed jobs.

I’d always thought the reason they made the vz.58 look so much like the AK was to assist with the friend or foe differentiation within/between the Warsaw Pact countries. In fast, chaotic combat situations, shapes/colors can be critical to tell apart enemies from people on the same side.

Zastava USA is probably the most impressive ak manufacturer in the US in my opinion. I truly believe their products to be higher quality than Arsenal

Mine would be my mak 90, they are cool but the chicom blued finish rusts more whenever I look away and the lack of a threaded barrel, bayo lug and even a cleaning rod. Also the Chinese hardwood handguards rattle badly. I think Romanian wasrs are honestly nicer

The mak 90s are known to have crappy furniture. Compared to the Prebans. My type 56 has the most beautiful wood and it fits like a glove

I have never understood the love for the postban chicom AKs, everything for look to metallurgy was bottom of the list. My only guess is it's people wanting what they had/couldnt buy as a kid and the collector market pushing things up. Nothing like the infux drying up to take a gun from questionable at best to "awsome", Dracos are a perfect example of that...

I used a post ban SA85M for my AKM63. It was unfired in box, first thing I did was shoot it and source the proper stuff for the deban. I like it a lot, but honestly its still not really among my favorite AKs I own. Thanx for more AK content! A lot of guys ask me their ak questions, and I always recommend your videos.

I have an ultra cool, single digit serial number, first year import Romanian AK. Based off all the research I did, it may be one of the first Romanian AK’s brought into the US. Being Romanian-American, this to me is the holy grail. However, it only likes certain mags. Romanian and Russian era correct mags. Modern cheap magpuls and what not just don’t fit well. And I’m not gonna take a dremel to this thing. Recoil isn’t as smooth as my modern AK’s but damn it’s pretty. Although classic looking, it just doesn’t scream quality like my single digit norinco AKM/47s blue bolt or even my modern Draco->pm90 commando clone. I just wish it was a little more. A unique feel of some sort, or something that makes me love it. I know it’s special. And I’ll probably hand it down to my first born son. But idk. I thought I’d be a little more in awe by it. I love Romanian AK’s. But it’s just not really a shooter. It’s a piece of history, but since it was already fired I figured I’d take it out once in a blue moon. I don’t. At least the round count will be sub 200 rounds.

I love the Tantal. Probably my favorite 5.45 that's actually obtainable. Getting a correct receiver for a kit build is a pain because no one makes a perfect one. Recreator's isn't quite right, the dimples are a little off, the bolt rails are wrong, the center support is not relieved, and the markings are too tall and slanted. Childers is better, but their markings are even worse.

Remember, these are never going to be true milspec guns. No fun switch and its parts. So IMO, don't sweat the tiny stuff. Just get a good receiver that is durable and enjoy it.

One Kalashnikov that I don’t really like but can’t seem to bring myself to get rid of is my Robinson Armament imported VEPR K. With its slant receiver, unthreaded muzzle (ban era import), and the Robinson proprietary furniture I’m not happy with it. It is a 100% NIB safe queen, I even reached out to Krebs Customs to see if they would give it their KVR/KV-13 treatment but they informed me they were no longer accepting host rifles for custom work. I probably need to sell it but I don’t even know what their current value is considering the importation ban on VEPR’s and the “everything shortage” in the firearms industry.

Your least favorite is my favorite, sa93 lol. From pictures I’ve seen online of military deactivated Bulgarian ak47s, they often had Russian/other wood furniture so that’s how I have mine configured. I bought mine already with the conversion work done thankfully by the previous owner

Also my gateway was an arsenal bulgarian SLR107FR. I traded it and I want it back, but I got a gen 1 ace galil 7.62x39 in the short configurations I SBRed into a MAR and I’ll never ever sell that thing. Every time I regret trading my FR I grab the Ace and just know in my heart it’s a better gun overall

Because I’m actually an AR fan, here’s my least favorite AR’s… 1: Colt 9 mm AR, the AR is not meant to chamber the 9 mm round from the ground up, and it’s the worst side of the HK MP5. 2: Colt IAR, this rifle is just a revamped SOCOM M4 with it’s 1080 rounds vs 900 rounds for the heavy barrel M4. 3: Any of the latest and greatest AR’s, I find them to be boring and they’re not as enjoyable as the classic AR’s. 4: Colt Target Match AR, that particular AR is so messed up and neutered because of the 1994 AWB. 5: Olympic OA96 and OA98, those are the AWB versions of the original Olympic OA93 AR pistol, as the 96 has a welded magazine and the 98 being so fragile because of the extensive skeletonizing to bring down the weight below 50 ounces.

Yep I have some that I would & have departed with. Most of them I wish I still had. I have some high end Valmet & Norinco rifles's that I'm not in love with that I would let go, but I'm sure I would regret it after the fact...considering inflation selling guns right now isn't too smart unless you really need the money.

the ak i disliked the most in my collection was the mak-90 sporter slant cut. sold it for way more than i bought it and replaced it with an atlantic ak63ds and wasr 10/63

For me, my least favorite AK is a pretty simple catch-all… any under-folder AK because they’re in my opinion, don’t look as beautiful as the fixed stock AK’s are, and they’re uncomfortable to shoot, just like with Ian of Forgotten Weapons on AK’s.

As far as SA93s go you can also be on the look out for NOS bulgarian wood stock set but it can literally take years of searching and it ain't cheap lol

Misha, I don't know if you have a Galil SAR or ACE, but they would have definitely made your last category! LOL I purchased a kit built SAR, which was the first build of the original owner. Soon after purchasing I had to have my go-to gunsmith do some fixes, because it destroyed ammo (requiring some extreme polishing of the feed ramp) and also most of the mags (which were thrown in) didn't stay locked in.. Several hundred dollars later after what was most probably an overpriced purchase, I have a rifle, which is surprisingly accurate, but still has one problematic mag, which won't lock in. Of course the original tritium flip ups weren't included (as they would have probably been well past their useful life) but it is a good rifle, just not one of my favorites. Enjoyed the video sir!

The Ace is a great import but yeah for a classic ARM or SAR, you are at the mercy of the kit quality and the quality of the builder. Plus that of the US receiver itself.

Just one of those things. If I had had the build done to my specs, I am sure it would be something I totally loved. For example, my Russian AKM build done by LegionUSA for me: Childers RU marked receiver and FB-Radom AKM profile barrel. About as good as it gets these days.

I had a Interarms Tantal that had the original Polish barrel. It was a great shooter I remember I put a regular AKM stock on it because I didn't like the folder. I wish I still had it I did trade it to get a M1 Garand which is also a great shooter.

Right now I feel like my least enjoyed AK (though my overall favorite) is my VEPR-FM-47-21 Molot Folder. That is sad because it is also the rifle that sits as my go-to rifle if I ever needed anything more than a pistol and I was nearby enough to it. I have shot many thousands of rounds through it, so I know it is durable and reliable, even more so than the SGL's I bought back when they came out.

I’ve had good luck with my GF5 If it’s was a first Ak I’d get a Zastava M70. The new ones that are imported to Zastava USA are tanks! I have one and it’ll never be sold. The GF5 is a decent build. I got one to finally test what PSA was all about

@@ruskibruh Its a beautiful rifle, but something just isn't right with it. It has an odd recoil impulse that causes the butt stock to kick upward and it isn't as reliable as AKs usually are. But it is one of my favorites to just look at

I've got two FM Veprs, one in 7.62x39 and unfired and one in 5.45, absolutely love them and the 5.45 has the RPK-74M rear end conversion done, but I'd trade both of them in a heartbeat for the full FM RPK-74M, even if it was pretty well worn in

The VZ is an awesome carbine and my favorite. I own the century and czechpoint. It’s smaller, lighter and looks more refined. The mags are super light too.

Sam-7 barrel isn’t on par with SA-93

True, the SAM7's barrel was made after Arsenal AD acquired new CHF tooling from Steyr GMBH. So with the new equipment, its entirely possible the SAM7's barrel is more exacting and thus accurate? maybe it is pretty theoretical.

@@misha5670 there’s a fair amount of material difference too. I would expect the SA-93 barrel to be superior, but maybe not.

@@colinvargo3418 SA93 is based on the AK Type II, where as the SAM7 is based on newer designs. I've done various breakdowns and comparisons in the past.
