When you're in the U.K. and the drinking age is 18, there really is no special reason to celebrate your 21st. American's made the 21st birthday a thing because it's the drinking age.

I’m originally from NZ and our 21st bday’s a massive and always have been regardless of drinking age as it’s when you’re properly an adult. We hire out venues, hundreds of ppl come to our parties and we hire a band etc. It’s a huge tradition. Remember some cultures have huge parties for engagements, some don’t. Some cultures have huuuuge 15th birthday parties (quinceranera) and some don’t. Stop raining on someone’s parade and thinking we are all the same 💛

in the UK we've always been more likely to properly celebrate our 21st over our 18th, i think its because it used to be the age where you could vote and its never ceased to be properly celebrated, plus at 18 you are still quite young so some of your friends won't be able to go on a night out with you whereas when you're 21 most of your friends are going to be over 18
