My friends and I had been at the Louisville state fair... completely worn out and the sun was going down . Next week my friend's mom was going to see Elvis and we had tickets to the Eagles with Joe Walsh and Elton John was playing next week too ! We sat in the baseball bleachers and watched Seals and Crofts that evening and I don't think I ever felt so mellow and calm in my life . What a memory that is .... PK

Fingers crossed that Beth will review Hummingbird someday. Hopefully the album version, because I think having more orchestral instruments added grandeur, especially at the end. But they had some lovely live performances, like on the Tonight Show in 1973 (two of them and a bassist).

I was honored to know Jimmy most of my life he has passed away now. But he was truly musically gifted. He played most instruments you can think of and he could write a song about anything in minutes. Never heard him play a wrong note or be off pitch singing.

Beautiful song/group to pick. I grew up listening to them. Another great duo of the 70's I'd like to recommend if you haven't already heard of them is England Dan and John Ford Coley. England Dan is actually Dan Seals, the younger brother of Jim Seals from this group. They had some beautiful songs with great harmonies such as "I'd really love to see you tonight". Dan Seals went on to have a solo career with a lot of hits in the country genre. One of his most popular songs is "Bop", one of my favorite songs of all time. I'm so happy to see you keeping the memory of these greats from the 70's alive so they won't be forgotten after my generation is gone.

The first concert my parents let me go to without them: Michael McDonald Harry Chapin Seals&Crofts Tickets were $4.75, Seals&Crofts didn't go on until 11pm but they played until 1am. Good times!

I was friends with them in the early 70s. I got to hear these songs before they were released sitting right in front of them.They founded the Bahai church in Houston. It is near the university of Houston.They did concerts on campus and also proselytized their faith. I had many discussion about music and religion with them. Nicest guys i ever knew in the music business.

There's a connection between Jimmy and Dash that even predates the Champs. They REALLY first met at Ranger (Texas) Community College, when Dash was drumming for an unknown local band. They were both North Central Texas boys; Jimmy was born at Sidney in Comanche County, and Dash at Cisco in neighboring Eastland County. (Ranger, where they first met, was also in Eastland County.) Jimmy's younger brother Danny ("England Dan") was born after the family moved from Comanche County to Upton County, in far West Texas.

Interesting that you mentioned a temple in Nepal; Seals and Crofts were adherents of the Baha’i faith and even would hold informal spiritual meetings after their shows, sometimes. They were very much about the serenity and healing powers of music and natural appreciation.

Tequila was a throwaway filler studio song. The Champs were studio musicians. The song was never meant to get airplay. It was meant to be a B-side instrumental. But like several hits of the 1950s -1960s, a DJ accidentally played it and it became a hit.

I had no idea they were in the Champs and did the Tequila song! So radically different! Thanks! I heard they wrote this song, but didn't release it for a long time because they weren't happy with it. Then while at a toy store one started playing the intro on a toy piano. That was the missing piece.

I am so thankful that I was born in 1961 and had a brother and sister that were 5 years and 3 years older than me. They introduced me to so much music from as far back as I can remember. Songs like this hat came out in the early 70's became the soundtrack to my life through middle school on. So much great, emotive music.

A couple of my favorite artists also covered this song. Shaw-Blades (Tommy Shaw from Styx and Jack Blades from Night Ranger, both of the band Damn Yankees) recorded a cover of this song for their album "Influence"(2007) that has really good covers of songs that influenced them; and their "Summer Breeze" got significant radio play in 2007. I play that album a lot. The album came about from their messing around in Tommy's home studio, and friends encouraged them to do it. They did a few shows to support it between their bands concert runs, and I saw them in a small club in Moorsville, NC - absolutely awesome show. Tommy Shaw also plays the mandolin, and also on their "Your Move", a Yes cover. You've done "Roundabout" and "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", so you could do "I've Seen All Good People/Your Move" and compare it to the Shaw-Blades version.

This song takes me back to when I arrived in Australia in mid 70s. A cover by local Aussie group, Stylus was a hit and it was continously playing on radio. I don't think I realised it was a cover until decades later.

I remember when this song came out. It makes me yearn for a time when I was young and oblivious to the realities of the world. I dreamed about coming home to a wonderful wife, in a beautiful house on a summer day-someone who was carefree and a soulmate who would wash away my troubles with a gentle embrace. Then I grew up, but this song still evokes those wistful feelings.

I didn't know OLD GREY WHISTLE used lip-sync'd or karaoke'd performances. Piano, bass, another guitar, drums, and bongos? Lotsa instruments and none of those musicians were shown on-stage and they'd be playing behind curtains or walls... and for such intricate timings, too. Because there are at least 3-voice harmonies.

One other reason why bands sounded like this in the 70's (both singing style and production qualities) is that most pop music was played on AM radio. I can remember hearing this on a small transistor radio with a tinny little speaker - the sound was much more compressed, both because of the transmission medium and because the equipment was lower-fidelity, so they'd compensate with the ornamentation that you don't hear as much of anymore.

As a testament to the music of the time, in the U.S. during the 70's, some record companies released their artists greatest hits LP's, joining Seals and Crofts at the time, were Elton John, Chicago, The Eagles, with more to follow. So, if you went into a record shop (before CD's, just Vinyl LP's and cassette tapes), you would see these collections on display. Another fact, you could purchase these LPs for $3.99 U.S.! The U.S. Seals and Crofts album was a best-seller with many great songs with their own particular sound and style. Great Reaction and Analysis. :)

Remember, Seals and Croft were adherents of the Baha'i Faith, which influenced a lot of their music, like this song. When I attended college, USF in Tampa FL, they had a concert on campus, followed by a fireside to explain their faith and their music.

Back in the day when I was 15 or so I earned enough money over the summer to buy a little Panasonic stereo component system for my bedroom. My first two albums were Seals & Crofts Summer Breezs and Eat a Peach by The Allman Brothers Band. Then I got Elton Johns Madman Across the Water, and then The Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands Will The Circle Be Unbroken. I think the next was The Yes Album. lol, I've always had eclectic tastes.

You should check out the popular Japanese group The Peanuts from the 60’s. A female duo made of two twins that actually had identical voices. Crazy harmony and naturally created singing tones and effects most need a mixing machine to do.
