A very seasoned transmission mechanic told me that the torque converter clutch in every 6R80 is going to eventually fail and the metals will then destroy the transmission. According to him, it doesn't matter how you take care of the fluid, and it doesn't matter how you drive it. You could baby it like grandma and keep the fluid bright pink (which is difficult since Mercon LV turns dark very quickly even under normal driving conditions) and it will still fail. You can expect to get between 100-150K out of them, max. I'm writing this in the middle of a 6R80 transmission swap in my 2016 F150. I also tow a camper. I do my own work, so I asked the transmission guy I know whether or not I was insane to try to swap transmissions in a driveway, considering my experience level. He gave me his opinion of 6R80s, Ford, and the auto industry in general. Thanks for this video. I'm replacing my transmission cooler and all the lines and this will help me figure out how to get my grill apart.

Certainly not true. I own 2 6r80 equipped vehicles. A 2008 Expedition and 2016 F150. Both have had the torque converter replaced however thats as far as it goes, the rest is bologna. Expedition developed a shudder at 218K and we replaced the converter. No damage to the transmission and its at 238K now. The other is a 2016 F150 and is a full bolt on e50 tuned beast and has had the hell ran out of it from racing to heavy towing and long distances at times. Has pulled 11,000 lbs 400 miles and 3000 back. 6000 lbs 1247 miles and 3000 lbs back. On and on. Ford service recommendation was 150K, I did it at 150K. Same as the Expedition it developed a shudder at 168K. Replaced converter and now tearing up the highway at 205K. 100-150K max and a destroyed transmission is absolutely bogus. I must have the only 2 good ones.

Thanks for the video! I ordered the mishimoto and the proper lines from ford today. Plan to add the trans cooler to my 16 F150 5.0 this weekend. It’s an XLT that does not have the heavy duty towing package added so I am adding this to prepare for hauling a travel trailer.

@Daniel Lambert, thank you for the comment, I'm glad this video helped you decide to tackle the job. It's the best towing upgrade I have made so far for towing our Grand Design travel trailer. Another one is the Power Stop Z36 brake pads and drilled and slotted rotors for extra stopping power. If you plan to do any mountainous driving this will help keep your brakes cool and last much longer.

Did it make a difference? I don’t have a cooler currently. Just bought the one you took off actually for my 2016 f150 lariat 5.0. Wondering if i should’ve spent extra for the moshi

@leblunt27 Thank you for the comment. Yes the Mishimoto Transmission cooler has made a huge difference over the stock cooler. It is significantly noticed on high mountain passes while towing a heavy trailer. Since we are on the road full time we wanted peace of mind knowing the temp wouldn't climb above the 225 range, where the trans fluid starts to break down. I'm happy with the upgrade and peace of mind.

What temps were you getting before this install. My transmission gets up to 230 not even towing with no cooler installed.

The F150 was getting low 240s while pulling a camper. Are you considering adding a cooler to yours? Are you driving a lot of mountain passes?

@@jacobsupgrades yes I want to add a cooler. It can get up to 230-240 when I have to rev up the engine to go uphill. like 3000 rpms for about 20-30 seconds to maintain hwy speed for a couple hills on my way home from work.

@mese600, not yet but I will say it's worth the upgrade. It's made a huge difference towing through the mountains and off-road driving. I highly recommend it.

why not just change the tranny filter while you were in there replacing all the fluid? guess i dont know miles on your truck
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades Жыл бұрын
@idahoman966, great question, at the time I had less than 100,000 miles on the truck and really didn't want to mess with dropping the pan to replace it. Recommended service interval is 150,000 miles but if you tow any I would do it sooner. It's on my list as a project this winter.

Hello, I am battling the same problem with our camper. We have the HD payload package on a 2015 5.0. We live in northern Idaho and every road goes way up or way down. I did service the transmission with Amsoil and a new filter, it helped on the acceleration shudder from a stop to speed, after the second drain and fill, but still have high Temps on the transmission when pulling big grades. I'm am divided between the AFE aluminum pan or the cooler? Whats your thoughts?
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 2 жыл бұрын
@rugerkampf, the transmission cooler has been a huge upgrade over the stock one but out East we did have the transmission get hot on long steep grades. I'm sure pairing it with the AFE pan you mentioned will help cool even more. After some thought I think regearing our truck to compensate for the 33" tires will help even more.

@@jacobsupgradesI have not done a bigger pan on my f150 but will probably do the cooler to start. I have a deeper pan with cooling fins on my 3500 Cummins and I hardly notice a difference. It has a huge cooler from the factory so that probably already works really efficiently. With that truck I tow 12k+ from Texas to Michigan, I hit a few steeper hills if I come up through Tennessee. But that’s my experience with a completely different transmission and truck so maybe it’ll help on the F-150 more

What is the temperatures drop with larger trans fluid cooler? I saw you were getting 240F before but what after?
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 11 ай бұрын
@phillipperritt7787, while towing it now hangs around 200-210. The highest I have seen on a mountain pass was 225F. I usually drive in manual mode while towing in those situations and try and hold 3rd gear as long as I can and that helps a lot.

Chevy has the same problems but worse. But you can change the thermostat on them pretty cheap and it will run much cooler. Still won't fix the fact that they are junk though.

@Kevin Albritton, I agree with you. I'm wondering if regearing my front and rear diffs would make the biggest difference in performance when towing. Especially when running 33" tires or larger.
