This worked almost flawlessly for me. Only exception was Canon didn't show up under Models. Need to run the following command in the pi shell: `sudo apt-get install cups-backend-bjnp` Then restart cups: `sudo service cups restart` Showed up from there, now everything is working great. Thanks for the clear instructions. Such a great resource.

This is the best vid i culd find! it is super ez but i am having a little problem with my usb printer. Every time i click print, NOTHING happens. hi. great video man. i wat to use this in my office. i have a pc in my room that is connected to another pc on the front desk of my office. the connection is wireless through a router. its a local network. these 2 computers are connected to each other but not to the internet. If i connect my pc to the internet, it is no longer connected to the pc on the front desk as the ip address is different. So can i connect my pc to a raspberry pi wireless printer through a local network and at the same time stay connected to the pc at the front desk?

great explanatory video. Everything worked for me. But I have the problem, if I want to print on a Windows PC, where I have inserted the Raspi printer, it takes almost 40 seconds until the printer is visible in the list of printers of e.g. Word. If I then call the print menu a second time, it is much faster. This is inconvenient. Do you have any idea what could be changed?

Is there any way to make my scanner wireless as well? It's a bit of a pain to unplug my pi every time I want to scan something to my laptop. Perhaps I could arrange something where pi automatically emails me the pages I've scanned or something?

Hello, any advice would be welcome.... trying to get this to work with a Citizen CL-S521. I have added the printer to CUPS and the driver is installed. When I try to add the printer in Windows it states "Status unavailable". Then when I go into CUPS and try to print a test it says "Waiting for printer to become availabe" So..... I assume everything is talking to each other but just not well enough to work..... The driver for the printer was downloaded from Citizen and was designed for use with CUPS on Raspbian.

Nice video, I will try this but I was wondering if there is a way to use this alongside of Pi hole on a raspberry pi? Because if I use that up in google chrome it would take me to my pi hole admin control page so I’m thinking using both side by side on the same pi won’t work?

it will work, do not worry. To access the CUPS interface (instead of the PiHole one), simply add the port number 631 at the end of your PI IP adress (something like 192.168.0.10:631)

It does not support it nativly but how you can get it to support it is to install the linux driver. Brother has linux drivers and I think you can use the .deb file. Just download the.deb to the raspberry pi and after installing CUPS perform a sudo dpkg -i and replace with the name of the one you downloaded and it should install. then when you go looking for your printer in the CUPS setup you should have the driver for it now Here is the website for the linux driver: support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=in&lang=en&prod=dcpl2520d_as Hope that helps. No it does not support the scanner feature. However, I do have the same thing with my HP officeJet. Just use SANE www.sane-project.org/ Works great.

Do you assign a STATIC address to the printer or use DHCP? If DHCP, what service is running on the Pi? Would it be possible to use a DIFFERENT sub-net address range for the printer i.e. connect to local home network using WiFi (e.g. 192.168.0.xx) and have printer on say 192.168.100.xx ? If yes, then will IP tables require editing and in what way? BIG thank you if able to assist... I have been attempting to achieve the goal your video presented for past 3 weeks WITHOUT success and suspect that my approach has one (or more) subtle differences that has broken something... Thanks for the great comment and I ma glad you are finding this helpful. Now in the case of network printers, like the one I show in the video at 8:00, it is already connected to my home network so it is already on the network. However, the issue I had was that using tablets and phones would not recognize it because it was too old. Thus, setting up this is a good way to bridge the gap. I set up the PI to basically act as the in between device to facilitate between a tablet/phone and the wireless printer. You don't have to connect the network printer directly to the PI you can, like in my case, configure the pi to take requests from devices and forward it to the printer. Now in the case of a USB only printer then, yes, you would connect that to the raspberry pi's USB ports and it would show up in the CUPS list as a LOCAL printer and then you can get it on the network and be discoverable by all devices in this way. I hope that was not confusing. I am thinking about making another video tackling the USB side as well. Hope that helps. cheers!

Can you print from an iPhone with this method? Does it recognise the printer as AirPrint by default? Also, is there any way to make a USB printer attached to an AirPort Extreme base station be recognised as AirPrint capable from an iPhone? Works fine from a Mac. But not from the iPhone. And according to Apple, for some weird reason, this setup is not supported. However, since it is supported from a Mac, why the hell wouldn't it work from an iPhone, as well?

If you are talking about something like a multi use printer that has scan feature as well as printing feature I am not quite sure. I don't think so since CUPS is only a printing protocol but I would have to research it I don't know off the top of my head.

@@misperry I see, but I am able to run a test print from the cups interface which would suggest it shouldn't be an issue with the driver. That leads me to think it's a windows or samba issue. Do the drivers for the printer also have to be installed on the client windows computer?

This didn't work for me, I tried to have a Zebra USB printer, it is a label thermal printer, CuPS installed the printer, the windows computer can see the printer and it was installed into 3 computers, but when trying to print an error pop up saying that windows is unable to print, in other computers looks like it sent the file to print but nothing happened at the printer. Also the 3 computers on the where I installed the printer connected to raspberry started to have problems with any online work these computers were doing, I have to disconnect the raspberry and remove the printer from each computer.
