These type of contest is all abt looks, u should represent the true beauty of ur country, not someone mixed or someone who looks totally different from the majority of the population. Mix with other eastern countries is ok but from totally different race, its not, if u choose someone who looks completely different, that means u think the face of real filipinos is ugly.

@@Noname-si6jr We have tribes in the Philippines called Aaetas that look african but they are not the majority. Most Filipinos are Austronesians or Malayo-Polynesian with Chinese ancestry, and others (some with Spanish, or Indian ancestry, etc). We look similar to other Southeast asians like Thais, Malaysians and Indonesians, also not all of us are dark brown either, a lot of us have light brown or light skin or just tanned... Anyway, the reason why most actors look fair or light skinned with Eurocentric features is because of the fact that they are more favored by the industry. Colorism is a problem all over Asia tbh. It's the same in India and other countries.

The fact that the Philippines culturally ignored us darker skinned Filipinos for decades is a win for all of us. She was born and raised in Bulacan, and she speaks Filipino fluently. That’s enough for me. She may be half-black, but she’s pure Filipina through and through. If the contestant was half Italian or US-American and didn’t even speak Tagalog, it’s always not an issue. Chelsea was born and raised locally. Also, many darker-skinned Filipinos, even Aeta children, can see themselves through her. Genetically, we’re all Austronesian and look different, but to a child, they don’t know. They see someone who looks like them with similar hair. Chelsea Manalo is a win for all in a land full of skin whitening and bleaching.

I dont deny the fact there are Filipinas who uses whitening soap to make their skin whiter. But Im willing to bet, the large majority would care less about how they look. Lets put it this way : Korean women would go leaps and bounds to change their appearance thru plastic surgery,. Meanwhile, an ordinary Filipina would hardly put on any makeup when going out.. My dudes, it's MAH-NAH-LO. 😅. The Philippines has and still, although getting better, places priority in a farer skin tone. The amount of whitening products is insane. We call them Morena/Morenas which refers to someone with a darker skin tone. But what people dont know is that there are indigenous peoples called the Aeta (i-tah). But with colonialism, much preference and much consideration for farer skin kind of became a massive thing. Sad. It also associated with the type of work...that if someone has a darker skin, it means that they most likely do more manual and outside work. As in, working outdoors. That being said, Chelsea is such a good competitor and a big chunk of the population, who follows pageants, support her and rooting for her.

Great vlog discussion, guys! David's Pilipino accent was spot on! Haha! Yeah, PH society is mIxed. Filipina beauties can be mestiza (white), morena (Malay), negrita (black), and tsinita (Chinese). As to the question - what is a Filipino? We should avoid searching for a standard based on the majority because it alienates those who don't fit into that standard. Similarly, it begs the question - What is an American? Scratching our heads for hours to find a standard is laborious and sometimes can even become violent. I wish the PH can reach the level of the US when the world doesn't really care if America is represented by a beauty queen who is white, black, brown, yellow (ewww, that's a weird term), green, purple, pink, and/or all of the above. 😅❤

So the problem is in the handlers of the Miss U Philippines of which they're fond of selecting candidates that are mixed races..they always wanted our candidates to look more like Latinas than representing the true Filipino / Filipina beauty to shine in the international beauty competition..

The average filipino actually has less white ancestry than the average black american... Altogether, genetic studies suggest that African Americans are a genetically diverse people. According to DNA analysis led in 2006 by Penn State geneticist Mark D. Shriver, around 58 percent of African Americans have at least 12.5% European ancestry (equivalent to one European great-grandparent and his/her forebears), 19.6 percent of African Americans have at least 25% European ancestry (equivalent to one European grandparent and his/her forebears), and 1 percent of African Americans have at least 50% European ancestry (equivalent to one European parent and his/her forebears). According to Shriver, around 5 percent of African Americans also have at least 12.5% Native American ancestry (equivalent to one Native American great-grandparent and his/her forebears). Research suggests that Native American ancestry among people who identify as African American is a result of relationships that occurred soon after slave ships arrived in the American colonies, and European ancestry is of more recent origin, often from the decades before the Civil War.

Its silly to imply that only one tribe occupied more than 7,000 Islands when there are many groups with different languages/dialects still in existence today. Many of the top athletes in the Philippines are half-black. A lot of them represented our country in international tournaments. Filipinos generally do not care about race as long as you have roots or connection. We even acccpted full foreigners who built their lives here. Many Filipinas do want to have lighter skin but we still appreciate our morena beauties. Children do tease dark-skinned classmate but they also tease the light-skinned ones. I was teased for being lighter-skinned than my cousins but it's more about being different, not actual hate. I became darker-skinned due to prolonged sun exposure so I no longer stand out as I did before. I do not see a lot of Filipinas undergoing radical, expensive cosmetic surgeries to change their looks drastically. It's really hard to find a "full" Filipino nowadays. We accept our colonial past. Our colonial past with the US helped build our modern economy. We even like Japan nowadays despite what is has done during WW2. It's part of us. We celebrate our diversity. China is trying to take our EEZ. There are even talks of war. But we cannot even seem to hate the tens of thousands of Chinese mainlanders in our country. Racism and colorism are not the great concerns youtube thinks it is. Hating others or yourself takes so much energy. I became aware of the beauty contest becoming viral because the crown was left floating like halo on her head.

I don't see Filipinos being as "sensitive" as western sensibilities, it's not perfect, so of course there will be still prejudice and stereotyping...but it's not enough for us Filipinos to divide the country worrying about race...there's more dispute/division when it comes to the two major religions IMO

I mean it's hard to find a pure blooded filipina or filipinos generally because we are mix because of so many invasions it's like ⅕ of the population is still has a pure filipino which is i think is pretty big for our population or not I'm not sure XD

Filipinos are not “very mixed.” Filipinos have like 3-4% European (Spaniard) admixture. So the overwhelming 96-97% is Southeast Asian stock. Just because the Philippines got converted to Catholicism and many Filipinos adopted Spanish surnames does not mean they are mixed.

Yeah the average Filipina is about as Spanish as the average Haitian is French and nobody would ever say that most Haitians are very mixed when the average Haitian looks like Lupita Nyong'o.

That percentage only pertains to Spanish colonization. The new influx of mixed marriages shows a different data. Also, when we say mixed it’s not exclusive to European mixes. I mean even Jose Rizal is part Chinese like a huge chunk of Filipinos.

@@ynnos5555 when you say “We say mix and it is not exclusively Europeans (Spaniards) mixes” I find that like a cop-out for denial, there's a problem with Filipinos (as well as other Asian groups, I'm not singling out only Filipinos here) that Filipinos view whites as more attractive and thereby mixed Filipino and white as more desirable than over non-mixed Filipinos. Filipino mixed with Chinese (Chinoy) doesn't count as mixed because essentially it's asian with another Asian. Meztizo/almost always refers to Filipinos mixed with Spaniards. Filipinos tend to push that mixed race thing to be more acceptable by non-Asians. To either be white adjacent or Latino/adjacent, contributing to the whole distance themselves from the other Asians, fill/am push the Pacific Islander category when the Philipines are geographically closer to China and Malaysia than any Polynesian, Micronesian, and Melanesian Islands. Are Filipinos mixed? Sure, but by that absurd logic, the Chinese are mixed too. Hong Kong (once a British colony) and Macau (once a Portuguese colony), right? Chinese are made up of 56 officially recognized ethnic groups (not counting the numerous other non-officially recognized groups). If China is working hard to restore its national pride and Asian pride by rejecting the colonial mindset, don't you think that is a noble cause? Filipinos seem to still suffer more than other Asian groups concerning colonialism. Another example could be the Vietnamese. Just because they were under French rule at one point doesn't mean they are mixed. The issue I see with Filipinos claiming that they are mixed is that they try to make it seem as if they are parallel to the people of Latin America. Where their Indigenous population has decimated to the point of almost being wiped out in some parts of that world. The admixture over there is 60-70% mixed Indigenous and European (mainly Spaniards), and this is not even counting the African and Asian mixed. To try to frame Filipinos in the same category, in terms of racial mixing, as Latino/as is a gross exaggeration and misleading just to distance themselves from the Asian category just to be closer with Latino/a groups. This is called self-hate on a collective level. To fix this one must first acknowledge that it exists. By the way, I have nothing but love and respect for my Filipino brothers and sisters. Time to break free from that colonial mindset. Not just Filipinos but any other Asians out there who think being Asian is somehow lesser or inferior to other races (especially white). Time to rise from the ashes of colonialism and emerge as proud Asian people.

@@nigeltang8738 you missed my point and I didn’t say mixed Spanish. Also, even modern Aetas have admixture to them. Do note that even before Spanish colonization migrants & traders are already in the Philippines so technically there’s no such thing as pure Filipino. Our ancestors are not even originally from here.

As a Filipino, I do not see any problem with her representing our country. The only true Filipinos are the Aetas, Atis, and other original settlers have black, darker brown, and light brown. The rest of us come from various backgrounds like Chinese, Taiwanese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Spanish, AMerican, Japanese, etc. She earned her victory and will excel in Miss Universe 2024.

In my case, I've been mistaken to be somebody from India (more because of my eyes but not so much of my nose) since I was young even though we don't have relatives from India or not that we know of. But my grandma looks like one from there. So, I still say I'm pure Filipino and I love my brown color. Not a fan of beauty white products, too. Filipinos are of mixed descent. Beauty is subjective. Let's just embrace whatever color we have.
