Which one did she explain again? None of them.

NOBODYs PERFECT..but, remember, before we've arrived from what we have right now, remember, we had also experienced and started from those things that i mentioned, like you wouldnt actually expect and believe that a filipino was able to speak in english fluently and confidently, would you? well maybe if they were born and had parents that werent filipinos, but what im trying to say is, you must also remember and go back to the reason why, we are right now, I'm hoping you wont misinterpret my thoughts and yes point well said, adjectives shouldnt be repeated, because they're already modifiers, and its very redundant and annoying to listen and to hear as well, but again nobody's perfect., i know sometimes those words that i keep on telling you are annoying and monotonous lines, but youre a filipino, you should understand the most, why us, keep repeating that, even though we know it at the beginning that it was wrong, we cant help it to say that, we're very vulnerable when it comes to that. lets just be considerable and appreciable shall we? anyways.., and im so glad for you... like im so delighted!, that your parents were able to taught and raised you well,

There is two ways to receive this question. One makes sense in an interview, the other completely does not: 1. “What is one - BIG - mistake - that you made in your life - and how did you make it right?” 2. “What is - one BIG mistake - that you made in your life - and how did you make it right?” “What is one” automatically asks for an example. For instance: “What’s one tall mountain in the world - and how high is it?” One is Mt. Kilimanjaro at 19, 341 ft, that’s one high mountain; there are others that are high as well, like Mt Everest at 26,026 ft - that’s the highest one. Now, did the question ask for highest? No! It asked for “What’s one”.

It's easy to *ignore*, be fake and deflect - rather than being honest, humble and real.

In my own opinion - making mistakes is not guilt or embarassing - because everyone makes mistakes. Also - resolving those mistakes are not guilt or embarassing - because everyone resolves their mistakes. In a pageant or a interview, it's the only time and a perfect time to explain how you learn and grown from your mistakes - even if you cannot come up with a huge example right away. That's what the questions asks.

Here’s the question again: The judges asked: What is one? This is a leader part of this question (any natural English speaker comprehends this fundamental grammar). It automatically implies a request for an example for the next part of the question (the main question of “how did you make it right”). Therefore, “What’s one? NOT one. It means multiple or many. Again, therefore; what’s one big example? What is one big, significant, or very relevant (example) of a mistake that you can explain how you made it right, or learned from? EXAMPLE: What’s one beautiful lake in the Sierras? I am not asking of the MOST beautiful lake, am I?

If they ARE prepared, then they have a suitable answer. If they are NOT prepared, then the REAL answer to the most stupid thing they have ever done might be something like this: not telling my mother about the way that person was behaving towards me; cheating on my boyfriend; sleeping with my best friend's partner; cheating in my final exam; lying to someone to hurt them; having that abortion; marrying the person that I am currently married to; taking drugs; getting so drunk that I don't know what happened; drowning my baby sister in the paddly pool; not going to see my grandma before she died; not responding to a text message from a suicidal friend; going to see my pregnant friend when I knew I had a rash ....... These are the "worst mistakes" that ordinary people carry around with them. Which one of them should a young lady reveal to the World at a beauty pageant?

my most embarrassing moment came when i misunderstood a simple question in front of my co-workers. we were at a restaurant and I was asked: “what’s one spicy item on the menu that is good, and what’s my favorite”. i told them that the special fire tuna hand-roll was the ‘spiciest’. they all said that I misunderstood what they asked, and that I was asked what-is-one 'spicy' item, not the spiciest. i was embarrassed and did not even answer what was my favorite was. i did not answer any part of the question, even the last part.

The thing about this question is that people expect to hear you give a mistake and how you work through it. The problem is that not everything is a mistakes to people. Some people accepted their life situation and move on. I made a mistake of booking the wrong flight destination but it was not so major that it stops my life.

To start with, let’s be fair, every contestant had to answer quickly, plus, they're around the same age; Venus was not the only one, that’s not being fair, that is clearly being bias. Also, the judge Baldwin never asked for her “biggest” mistake. Most of her fans either misunderstand this easy question, or they are very defensive and arrogant. A person cannot answer - when they do not know the question.
@jasonlicos3 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of reasons why it's hard to answer. It's a hard question because some people doesn't want to remember their biggest mistake. They focus on doing better than the past to the point that they tend to forget their mistakes. Some people are just very private. But in pageantry, it's easy to make up a story or to fabricate your answer if you are not afraid to lie and later be proven as a fraud.

It’s *irritating* (and frustrating) when you misunderstand the question; isn’t it? A great question, *such* as this, entices the contestant to describe her *humility*; by admitting she even makes mistakes, and learns from them; which Venus didn’t do; *honesty* by not coming up with an example right away; *strength* by describing how she corrects her mistakes; and *wisdom* by describing how she tries never makes the same ones again. Instead she showed arrogance (intended or not), and mass confusion which made her look very weak. BTW; I guess the judge irritates any contestant with any question.
@NinoBegatonga11 жыл бұрын
I don't know why this easy question is so badly misunderstood. It is not a secret that everybody on earth make mistakes. And, this was a special opportunity, on stage, in a competition, the only place and a perfect chance to show how you resolve your mistakes; they wanted her to explain her great character. How complicated is that? How does it turn unanswerable? I guess when you don't understand it, it can be unanswerable.
@alanyakenny9 жыл бұрын
That was a rather simple question because all you had to do was reflect for a second for the answer. We all reflect about our life and adjustments we can make even the seemingly perfect lives. Yes, women should have it easier than men in this scenario. As men have pride and ego. Either you had a perfect life amd cant recall a single mistake (huge or small in this case) Or Had a life full of mistakes and from those had to pick the most impactful one. Much easier than say what's your favorite song, what do you feel about the war on terror, what do you think about freedom of speech which all tend to have long & complicated answers.

I'd like to know a few things: 1. Where did they ask for "biggest"? 2. What defines a big mistake? 3. Why do they ask this question in interviews? 4. Can this question be taken two different ways? I dare anyone to answer these.

Miss Philippines could have answered something like,"My biggest mistake in life was walking away when I've witnessed someone being bullied in the street. I could have stopped the bully and stand up for the person who cannot defend herself and tell do not allow others to step on you and tell you otherwise. You are a beautiful person. The question requires a person to admit something she has done wrong and what she could have done to make it right. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. There's a humility in honesty but defiance only shows arrogance.

***** . Well, Thank you! But I'm not interested. As for the minutes, it just took me a couple of seconds to think. I know people crash under pressure but her question is not about explaning the concept of evolution or the big bang theory. It was a random and a simplest question every human can relate. Anyway, I was just as bummed as you are when she lost her chance to win the title. She gave an empty response and evaded the question and simply said,"I'm just happy to be here. Thank you" I guess by now she realized how she made her biggest mistake in life. Lesson learned.

This is such an easy and simple question and a great opportunity to explain how you resolve your mistakes, as the question asks. It's the chance to describe a persons' humility and strength. The misunderstanding is the judge never asked for "worst" mistake, did he? No! Please show me where and then your comment would be justified. Until then, he didn't. Why make a question up, or words up, just to justify a loss?

It's such an easy question, most arrogant people cannot understand this widely used question to see if the interviewee can even admit making mistakes, learn from them, and how they correct their mistakes. That's exactly what it asks, doesn't it? -->"How did you make it right?". It's so simple; a totaly idiot is easily confused by it.

The Miss Universe Pageant and it's officials DO NOT ask 'unfair' questions to its candidates. Anyone who thinks that is just making pathetic excuses for their contestant in a very bias manner. It's as simple as that.

I am still amazed that people continue to misunderstand the question because judge Baldwin never asked for the biggest mistake. The MissUniverse doest not want liars (strike one). This easy question is specially designed and it worked to weed-out arrogant liars and fake deceivers. How about trying being honest (if you even know what that feels like) and say that you can’t think of one example at the moment - that’s being very honest and is a great attribute for being a MissUniverse. Can you even admit making mistakes? You can’t. That is lying right there (strike two). How did you make it right? No answer? (STRIKE THREE)! Strike four? No one asked for "biggest".

***** I know English is not your first language; it might not even be your second, however, a child born in the U.S. will know what’s implied, and what’s not, unlike someone like you. You seem to bad misunderstand this very badly. For instance, answer this: What’s one wide river in the U.S.? Am I asking for the widest? This is basic first-grade English. Besides U.S. English terms and real comprehension, this question is specially designed and purposely composed a certain way. They did not want an example; they wanted to see if the interviewee is open, confident, strong and humble from resolving her mistakes; if she can even admit to making them.

I see your rush to answer speaks volume to your incapacity to understand this easy question in English.

I don't believe any of that. Regardless... I asked what's one wide river, I did not ask for the widest; you even gave me examples, right? The same type of question was posed to Venus and you (also) misunderstood it as biggest, but you went on to undertand my question you did not misunderstand it as widest. Why is that? Her question is no different than mine. Therefore, you did not teach anyone English. I think it's due to selective understanding and misunderstanding due to bias. In your mind(s) you cannot comprehend your hero Venus misunderstanding a simple question, therefore the question must be wrong...not Venus. Do you want me to answer this easy question? OK, You answer it first and then I will.

It's not the 'mistake' that this simple question is enticing. It's how did the canidate make it right, or how she corrected it. The judges wanted a great example of that - easy.
@slumlish10110 жыл бұрын
This was an easy question to answer. It has nothing to do with values or innocence of the one who randomly picked it. Most losers find any poor excuse why she didnt win or how she was cheated - nobody cheated anyone. The truth is she cheated herself by being defensive, evasive and arrogant (over-confident). It's how she resolved the mistake, not made the mistake - a fatal misunderstanding.
@C8615380510 жыл бұрын
Except - the question was not about anyone's "greatest" mistake. The question is HOW THEM CORRECTED IT, *using* a significant, or big example. The judges and the world DID wanted to hear how she made a negative into a positive, or right from wrong, or any kind of HUMILITY from her. A defensive person would think it's the mistake that counts, and not about how they fixed it. It would seem that this weak person would keep on making the same mistakes over again.
@NinoBegatonga10 жыл бұрын
This was a great question, and an easy question as well. This one can't admit making mistakes? Everyone makes mistakes because they are human. She is not special. Denying it makes her look like a liar. The pageant does not asked stupid questions, especially if the girls pick their own questions. She said major, the judge did not.
@Jonathanyagami10 жыл бұрын
That is not a great question its stupid why not ask her what is the worst part of her body, or what does she hates the most? Why is the question a personal question when they must ask intelligent questions. And I would like to read what your answer would have been.

Jonathan yagami 1. You cannot hide you bias behind a made-up Japanese avatar / name. 2. The MU does not asked "not great", or "too personal" or "not intelligent" questions in the biggest pageant that there is. It is that your English is poor and you, and Venus cannot comprehend this easy question. You cannot admit it, just as Venus cannot admit that she is imperfect and human.

Ok it seems i have to explain it to you with oranges and apples, my sarcasm is about why are they asking something negative ?I am not saying the question is hard it is a question that implies someone making a mistake...So why the fuck you cant understand that is not a good question for a miss universe? If I remember correctly, she never gave an answer. "What's one mistake?" no answer, "How did you correct it?" no answer. The pageant said the response had nothing to do with the question and all non-venus-supporters alll agree. Also, this is a question specifically designed for job and pageant candiates, not for presidents who, as you should have known already, cannot give his presidential, political or national mistakes away to the world.

@alalalalal483310 жыл бұрын
So many people, across to many difference paths misunderstand this simple easy question. In order to comprehend this elementary question, a person has to, first, be able to understand the question, be humble, strong, and confident. A person has to admit the one thing we all share and the one thing that makes us all human, ‘imperfection’. In order to learn, one must and always fail. Science is a study of failure, in order to get that single, final working prototype. No one wakes up and succeeds and ‘knows-it-all’. For example, the Wright Brothers did not succeed in flying the fist attempt, and for God’s sake, NASA did not succeed at space flight (with a vast team of scientist and engineers behind the project(s) (we still can’t get it right). So why is it even slightly difficult for one little amateur contestant to admit that she makes mistakes? Did she claim that she was perfect? I know she misunderstood the question, and everybody knows that she was over-confident. Even if she misunderstood the question, etc, the humbling thing to do was to at least admit that she [does] make mistakes like everyone, big and small, and answer at least part of the question and say, I learn from my mistakes - that’s how she makes it right, and so on. Neither which she did. It was apparent that she panicked and thanked everyone (twice), and gave a response that had nothing to do with the actual question. So, for those who continue to support and purposely (of innocently) misunderstand this question, she should have taken a deep breath and tried a tiny bit of humility and heard the whole questions. She didn’t and she ONLY heard: mistake, BIG mistake. Somewhere, she head ‘biggest’, which is not even there. Most do, and that is the failure of the listener/recipient. Most think, especially in her culture, that a mistake makes them look weak, a failure. Little do they know, it’s just the opposite, in the rest of the world? With this question, you can turn the tables on mistakes, by explaining that one needs mistakes to succeed, to learn, to be more confident, stronger, wiser, etc. It’s NOT the mistake (which is part of life); it’s how a person learns from it. That was the question; if you go back and hear it again. I know I’m wasting this comment because most of her supports cannot even admit her misunderstanding; the ironic purpose of this exact question.
@Ripplestorm10 жыл бұрын
I guess I would fail that question too, because I think the greatest mistake people make is holding an idea of an unreachable perfection. I think of life as perfect no matter how chaotic,dark, or good it can be. Its life there is not a single path or a guide on life
