El presentador de ese año nombró de primera finalista a Venezuela y república dominicana ganó. 6 años después fue viceversa, nombró de primera finalista a república dominicana y Venezuela ganó. En pocas palabras Venezuela se la descobró, los mismo pasó con USA en 1967 que le ganó a Venezuela y 19 años después en 1986 fue viceversa y 11 años después en 1997 USA le ganó de nuevo y falta que Venezuela se la descobre nuevamente.

This was a crucial turning point for Venezuela in beauty pageants. In this century alone, there was never any Venezuelan candidate at Miss Universe who generated a lot of buzz like Mariangel Ruiz did in 2003. Against all odds, she managed to even place runner-up to Dominican Republic. If I remember correctly that year, the Miss Venezuela Organization (under Osmel Souza) prioritized training Amelia Vega at the expense of Mariangel, who almost missed the deadline of arrival on the preliminaries amidst a lot of controversy back then, and then they sort of heavily reduced training foreign delegates soon after their loss that same year. And more noteworthy is that this was the last of their 21 consecutive years of semifinal placements at Miss Universe until they were beaten by Mexico for the last semifinal spot in 2004. Not only that, I also think when India missed the semifinal cut after their 1992-2002 streak of placements, and then Japan did make the Top 5, it signalled a new era for Asian candidates in the pageant. They became a lot fiercer and bolder in expressing themselves live on television in the following years to come, especially when looking now at the 2010s.

Me enloquece como rompe con su presencia ante todas al aparecer en traje de baño .. un contraste total con todas.. le tiemblan sus pechos al par de su caminar como diciendo pum pum pas pam pam!! aquí esta mi sensualidad, mi carisma, mi yo el ser mujer no me avergüenza disfruto tener pechos , piernas largas y me siento feliz y cómo guiña el ojo coquetisima perfecta puro FUEGO ESO SOMOS LAS LAS LATINAS un contraste inmenso ante japon que ni sonrie, con Venezuela se achicopalo no le puso sabor no se porqué si somos mujeres latinas fuego!!! La serbia es puro frio, la de Sudáfrica con mucha sencillez y simpleza y Amelia las hizo pedazos ahi en su actitud de alegrarse cuando elegian a las otras y no a ella. Dios te da aunque te quites.

@@kerchow2062 no arguement with me with regards to Amelia being the winner. But in my country we have our own native languages. Others can speak two and that's common but all our girls save only one exception all spoke in English on any international stage so that's no excuse. We were also a former Spanish colony so that's no justification to us.

@@papapeethehunks Ok but the DR was colonized by french and english so the fact that people get on us for "not speaking english too well" in MU with amelia, clarissa, kimberly jimenez is so annoying because they try and many live in the US now, clarissa and her PR boyfriend, amelia and her DR husband on the NBA they both learned it, and kimberly with her italy bf they all learned and put effort but apprently it's not "good enough" coming from the countries who have english listed as their official language, like some dominican MUs introduce themself as "Republica Dominicana" it becomes a problem but Italy can say "Italia" and they were all cool with it
