Yes, I’m in my bathroom for this recap. 🤣 It was the only place I could hide away from my kids while I recapped the Miss Universe 2021 pageant. And yes, I have a giant wet spot on my pants from Lord knows what. But at least I was able to get my thoughts on the pageant out there for you!! Let me know if you agree/disagree.

Miss Shandi sounded like the Meow thing was something that Harnaaz asked herself to do and volunteered for it. I am not sure how people wanted her to handle the mimickry question. It was something she was asked to do and she handled it so nicely and sportily. Ppl are unnecessarily making an issue out of it. What was she supposed to say on stage? "No I won't do it" Harvey, next question please. Give the girl a break already.

The IMG era is way different compared to the Trump era when mostly the modelesque ones were chosen. IMG is more focused on someone who's authentic and would be the best spokesperson for the brand. But I do agree that this year, we had a wide variety in terms and looks and body shapes and backgrounds that makes the pageant more inclusive. But the bottomline is that the woman that best represents authenticity, initiative and beauty wins. Congratulations Miss India! 🤩🙌🏻💐

@Zua Cole what part of her comment did she equate modelesque to non-authentic? read and comperehend. IMG era is really more inclusive in terms of their first semi-finalists. today closed-door interview weighs 50 percent. thus the new breed of finalists.

@@shidneyseldon Interview was just 3 minutes !!!!!! and all the judges together !!!!!!! In the past judges were 12 and they interviewed the contestants for at least 8 minutes and individually each judge !!!!!. So the interview of 3 minutes DOESEN’T EXIST !!!!!, plus don’t call it anymore a “BEAUTY PAGEANT”.

they all must have model figures and faces, otherwise they would not even qualify for national competitions and no one would send them to Miss Universe. Whether they are authentic and whether they are good speakers is difficult to say, because their statements were quite short. And as for the diversity, I do not agree at all, because practically every year representatives from the same countries are chosen and nearly all of them with dark skin, black hair and eyes. And, as usual, Europe is not represented (Great Britain and France are always in the top 16)

I do agree with your husband, the camerawork was a mess this year. They kept missing the last shot of the contestants when they were striking the final pose. Also a lot of contestants took lot longer to walk and some did twirls like Puerto Rico, so that could have thrown the timing and the camera crew off. This was a weak year indeed but the top 3 was really strong and well deserved. Along with Belgium, I was disappointed that Spain didn't make it. The girl had a divine face. Loved the moment during the final look when Paraguay entered gliding down the stairs with the lights behind her. She looked like a literal angel. That moment when India kinda kissed the crown and took blessing from it before Andrea put it on her was very cute. Shows the girl is rooted in her culture. She is gonna be a great Miss Universe and will be very successful in her country. Won't be surprised if she stars in a Bollywood movie in a couple of years as most winners end up in movies. Great review and very entertaining as always. You could still win the whole damn pageant with the pose you struck at 19:11! Future titleholders must take notes. Merry Christmas and a very Happy Holidays to you and your beautiful family (and that includes your farm animals too lol) !

Loved hearing you’re thoughts and I agree with everything you said. I hope you recap for Miss World 2021 that’s coming up as well. Historically when Miss Universe is from India , through some twisted fate India won Miss world as well. It’s happened twice. They had Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai one year and then Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta in 2000.

It's rather obvious that the Miss Universe had to evolve with the times, for better or for worse, to stay relevant and here are my two cents: The ability to communicate in english is almost an unspoken requirement to be a serious contender; swimsuit is no longer focus on titillation unlike the past but more on body positivity. Also, delegates never looked like super models, not even in your days, so I'm surprised that you would have that kind of expectation because they have completely different body types; Steve Harvey is an enigma as the host because he is neither witty nor funny. His ad libs are thoughtless and condescending.

I agree with Shandi on all fronts. It is heartbreaking that Belgium did not place. She was the face of this edition of Miss Universe and absolutely killed in prelims. It must have been that she completely bombed in interview. The pressure of that room can knock a contestant off her game causing an unexpected mess up. I hope that didn't happen to her, but it'll remain a mystery how she was left out. Production wise, MUO was on point for its 70th anniversary. The stage was one of the best in MU history and the host country choice was perfect. Israel is the right mix of summery exoticness with a classic cosmopolitan metropolis vibe. Only thing about the show was the quality of the video production. I found the video mixing to be a bit choppy; the segments weren't blended together well in some parts. I am split on Shandi's opinion about 'every contestant being dressed the same'. While I don't like both long and short dresses in a multitude of colours on the same stage at the same time, slight variations in the same general style can work. A carefully coordinated pattern is ideal. We don't want random, but monotony is no fun either. As to the contestants' performances, totally agree that PR was ridiculous. Took up way too much time at the starting point during evening gown and then did that crazy walk. Just too much. I expected better from a Miss Puerto Rico. Miss USA's gown choice was unfortunate. I knew Top 10 was as far as she would go when she came out. Not her fault. She did her best given the time. Still a great showing. Didn't think Paraguay would have made Top 5. Thought the judges would not have liked that look for a Miss Universe stage but turns out they did. Speaking of Paraguay, I think she may have won had she not spoken the way she did during her Top 3 answer. She was very impassioned and animated in her speech and seemed to want to create a moment. The judges nowadays seem not to choose the contestant whom one can sense is trying to rile up a crowd or create a viral moment. It reminded of Miss Peru earlier this year when she made Top 5. She did the same thing. MUO probably advises the selection committee against choosing girls who take that approach. The job of Miss Universe is to be an ambassador and a spokesperson for multiple organizations, charities and brands. It makes sense that they are looking for someone who demonstrates that she can be a diplomat and always stay even-keeled and respectful. The way to go is to be calm, collected and letting your power derive from the intention behind your message. Miss India did a better job at that, and now she takes the crown back to her home country after 21 years. Congratulations to India!

Belgium was my sentimental favourite as well. If there was to be a “surprise” winner this year it should have been her. She could have easily gone on to be a great Miss Universe with her heart and personality. If communication was the problem; I think that could have easily been sorted had she spoken in her native French with an interpreter.

I was like not really excited and not anticipated to the 70th competition hmm😕 was totally Shocked about Bahamas... and they changed the name by adding “The” Bahamas🤨 I feel sad to Miss USA😫 Like she literally won her national competition and then straight away ready to compete for Miss Universe. Like she didn’t even had the time for her Miss USA reign bfore coming to compete to Miss Universe.. I actually don’t like Miss Paraguay’s and South Africa’s gown🤨 it was like mehh I WAS DAMN MADDD THAT MY BELGIUM 🇧🇪 DIDN’T MADE THE FINALS CUT😫😫😫😫😩😩😡😡😡🤬😤😤😤😤😤 SHE WAS OBVIOUSLY A CLEAR SHOT WINNER haihhh😪😪

I agree Philippines slit was high on her gown, but I thought it really flattered her figure by elongating her already long legs and made her stand out among the other girls - combined with the face she gave us, as well the gold design of the gown, she had a real queen aura. Just my opinion.

Totally agree on your assessment of Miss USA as well as Miss Universe. I adore Elle and I was rooting hard for her to win Miss Universe, but I was worried she’d have some challenges given the lateness of time between the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. I believe Elle was ready for Miss Universe in relation to her own personal preparation, but her Team wasn’t prepared for her. The gown choices, though were nice dresses, didn’t seem to be her style…and it kinda showed. Also, possibly her arriving late to Israel (absolutely no fault of her own) might have tested her psyche. How could it not? She was about to engage in a pretty heavy competition. She never got a break, regardless of her having to quarantine for a time. Her performance was always good, but if she wasn’t completely exhausted it would be surprising. I’m glad she’ll now have a little time to rest and reflect before getting into her full Miss USA duties. Otherwise, I honestly saw her as Miss Universe. I also believe Miss Paraguay was first runner up because of her beauty. Her responses to her questions were weak… both times. Miss Colombia should have been selected to the top 5 over Miss Paraguay, IMO, as her responses to her questions were decidedly better. I was afraid, for the sane reasons, Miss Paraguay might win the Miss Universe title because everyone seemed captivated by her beauty and would ignore that her question responses were weak. But I was glad that in the end, they couldn’t ignore the better Miss India’s responses to her questions, since both candidates were very beautiful. To each their own, of course, but I did NOT like Miss Paraguay’s gown. But then, I’m not a fan of pastel colors. The pale green kinda washed her out. As a top model, I expected something more dramatic, though I did like the flowy fabric. I agree that the arm flailing she did during evening gown was a bit much. We could already see the dress was flowy, it didn’t need the arm twirling at the end of her performance. With respect to Miss Puerto, I had to laugh. You were right on the money. Her walk during the evening gown competition was almost comical. She over did the shoulder movement, as you described and it was indeed a turnoff. It was almost a caricature of a pageant walk. I always look forward to your assessments of these pageants, sometimes pointing out things, good and not so good that I missed, while adding some comic moments.

YES ... My issue with Steve Harvey is, for me, are the same jokes "His wife spends money." He won't "flirt" play off the contestants who are excited to make it (IE The Bahamas making their FIRST ever advancement to the semi-finals). I believe that the co-host from the preliminary competition (and he has been a color commentator at Miss USA & Miss Universe), Carson Kressley, would be the best choice to host the pageant. He has the personality and I think he would keep the attention on the delegates and not about himself.

Miss Universe 2012 is a good example of who’s hands were on top and who should have won in my opinion. Miss Philippines hands were on top, while USA was on bottom. A lot of people were shocked.

Bahamas was good in prelims, she was honored with an award and spoke very eloquently, but even better the next girl chili who won an award did NOT speak well at all. It made what Bahamas said even better.

About the hands on top thing, what do you think of Miss Universe 2018? Her right hand was not on top, but her left was.

OMG I love You Shandi because everything you said were the same things I had on my mind & what I already said in other comments section.. So i’m not going to repeat again because I echo every word you said.. But just to highlight: Yes! I was so bummed Belgium didn’t make it! She didn’t deserve this year’s El Tocuyo Award. Along with Spain & Thailand, just to add.. But I’m happy that my predicted Top 2 actually came true! Paraguay & India were my winners from the start. They were both consistent & incredibly beautiful. Kuddos to Israel for this successful & great hosting. They shut down the critics especially those who were against them hosting this year. Speaking of future host, Ryan Seacrest is my dream host for MU.. He’s a pro & classy.. Congratulations India for a well-deserved victory..

Belgium did fantastic in prelims and I hate to even say this but her gown ruined her performance for at least myself the top was not flattering on the sides and I think that honestly played a role

Yes!! Her gown was NOT FIT well at all!! It kept gaping every step she took. You even saw pads at the end. I was so disappointed cause I had her high on my list. Why didn't her team see that the fit was horrible for her prelims dress???

@@dangutube5420 oh thank god I wasn’t the only one who saw that. But yes, I guess you never know maybe she didn’t have a choice or her first choice dress got stolen like Puerto Rico last year 🧐 I felt bad for her because her story was so great and she was stunning!

The gowns that Miss USA wore was designed by a Filipino designer Michael Cinco! Those gowns looked fab on Miss USA but she looked tired and not on her best..Miss South Africa's gown was designed also by a Filipino..Other countries' gowns were designed by other famous Filipino designers.. Only Miss Philippines from top 5 Q and A answered the question directly but the only thing was I think the way she delivered the question..other girls answers were not on point but answered with confidence.. Thank You for your honest reaction and loving Filipino fans in pageantry..God bless you Shandi!

Paraguay didn’t answer her Top 5 question so I didn’t get why she was in the Top 3 instead of Colombia or the Philippines, but she delivered better then them so that’s possibly why she got in.

I think the main problem is because the girls competed at like 2 or 3 am. I can only imagine competing after waking up at like 8 am and being at the venue that long THEN having to compete. Given that, I feel like they did great. But I agree with pretty much everything you said!

A lot of girls who everyone thought would’ve made it to the top 16 didn’t and they were all beautiful/great speakers which tells me that MUO literally picks their favorites regardless of interview. It’s all luck at this point!

OMG you look fantastic. You are so humble. YOU WERE ALSO 1ST RUNNER-UP IN MISS UNIVERSE 2004. Shandi, you are right about the Masters of Ceremony position. I like Steve Harvey, but it is time for a change. Miss Singapore reminded me of Halle Berry about 20-25 years ago. Hope to see you on anything in the future. Loved Paraguay's dress as well. I thought there were too many hip-high slits, a lot of gold, and too many gliterry gowns. I thought I was going blind.

Excellent review!!!!! I agree with the majority of what you mentioned. I actually did watch the preliminary competition and was sure Belgium would make it. I was really disappointed she didn't. I also thought Singapore and The Bahamas were a huge surprise. I had everyone else on my predictions except for Japan and Aruba, but I loved Japan based on her introduction to Steve during the finals. FYI, The Bahamas got the Spirit of Carnival award at the Prelim show, so she's must have been an amazing lady thorough the whole thing and that's why she made it to the top 10, because her overall score must have been through the roof. I thought the swimsuits were hideous. Those styles don't work with most body types. In regards to India's intro with the animal sounds... Her reaction made me think "really?!?! Of all the question you could have asked me, this is what I have to show the world?". She didn't back down from the challenge though, so I applaud her for that, but... Come on. It's like they knew she was the one to beat and gave her the worst question. I loved Paraguay and had her as the winner in my predictions, but I think she was given a great question to introduce herself as opposed to what happened with India. I was also surprised Paraguay made it to the top 3 after not even answering the top 5 question. Had she nailed her questions, she would have won, because she was the must beautiful and everyone loved her. I also had France as a favorite and thought she would be the winner or 1st RU. I was very upset she was left at top 10. I wonder if her lack of interaction due to her quarantine (tested positive for COVID-19) affected her overall score. I didn't originally liked India in pictures, but I loved her during Prelim, and she was constantly doing amazing during finals. I feel her presence and answers were worthy of the crown. BTW, your bathroom is Gorgeous!!!!!!! And lastly, how do you stay so youthful and beautiful with 3 toddlers and a husband!?!?!?🤩

I forgot to add... You are absolutely right about Elle's dress. Her Prelim gotten was hideous and the finals one just didn't quite do it for me. I think you nailed it with the sheer part being too light. Had it been her skin color, it worked have had a great effect.
