The criteria for Miss universe has changed, and communication and advocacy seems to have a larger role (more than gown and walk) in determining the winner. All of the top 16 except for 1 contestant (which might have been the fan vote winner) were great speakers with advocacies that stood out, not just pretty faces. They also did a lot of work for their respective communities prior joining the pageantry world. It makes sense to me why Celeste and Anna didn't make it. While Celeste is excellent when it comes to performance on stage (she was much better in her national pageant though, and I believe her prelim gown could have been much better), she was lacking in the advocacy and story aspect. Celeste promoted the story that she failed her first pageant and now she's been given a second chance (Pia and Cat already own that story) more so than her actual advocacy. Her advocacy did not stand out nor was it inspiring. For instance miss Puerto Rico was known as the "Space Girl" who teaches stem to young girls and promotes stem education for females. She wants to be the first Miss Universe in space. Anna had an inspiring advocacy and story, but her english level is concerning. For an international platform like Miss universe a decent english level is crucial. English is the language for international communication. I hope both MUT and MUPH takes into account all the aforementioned for their new queens.

I agree with you and I’ve said pretty much said the same in other pageant vlogs/pages. It’s clear to me now that MUO’s “transformational leader” is someone who transforms the lives of OTHERS through their passion and leadership. As you say, all of the top 16 have this but it was R’Bonney who said it best in her final q+a Given that prelim interview was worth 50% and Celeste’s prelim performance was just ok, it was not meant to be. Her lack of her own advocacy was a concern of mine even during MuPh 2022. All of the technical aspects of pageantry are trainable. A purpose in life is not. MUPH and MUT need to reconfigure their plan and start to pay closer attention to an applicant’s advocacy experience.

@troyboy89
@troyboy89 Жыл бұрын
@Kathi Simpson I agree that there is nothing wrong with celebrating beauty. I think though that swimsuit and evening gown is more about how confidently a delegate presents themselves in both competitions, not necessarily how beautiful they look in them. This is consistent with the themes of previous mottos (I.e “confidently beautiful” etc). Ann (the new owner) even mentjoned in her speech during the show about the “beauty in humanity”. In other words, the beauty in charity/advocacy work. Its becoming clear that we are in a new era of Miss Universe which im all for. I’m loving this new direction! Plus there are other pageants that are more traditionally focused on physical beauty (miss grand, miss supranational etc).

I agree with you. Miss Universe had no plans from the beginning to crown R'Bonney. I watched the whole show on the final night. Miss USA won the competition fair and square. I also loved she connected the Organisation's theme to her own personal experience and advocacy in her answer. The Organisation is looking for someone who has leadership qualities. Miss USA's answer was about her transformational leadership which made her the winner. Unfortunately, there are many people out there thinking that Venezuela was very beautiful; she wore a beautiful gown and so, she deserved the crown. They forgot that Beauty pageants are not only about being beautiful. You got to have brains and intelligence that should wow the judges. Miss USA had that intelligence. She knew how to execute her intelligence.

Lead by Example! Well said. R'Bonney has proved that she is a transformational leader by her years of working with women who were victims of human trafficking and abuse. It is well documented that her advocacy was not just for the competition. She has the skill set to teach sewing as evidenced by her education of having a degree in fashion. R'Bonney's video clips of her actually show her sewing skills and shows her in her element of teaching women. You can't just "choose" a advocacy for the purpose of winning a competition and then show a few video clips that show you working with children. Education is a easy advocacy to choose, however, it would have been more powerful if when advocating for education, you had the necessary degree or training for being a teacher. There was way too much hype and over exposure for some contestants based on looks, outfits, social media. It's like judging a book by it's cover. It's the substance of the contestants, not the "look". I love it when the dark horses become part of the competition. After watching the prelims my list did change and many of the "front runners" and those who were hyped dropped from my list. I loved the surprises in the top 16. Yes, the JKN era is more about a pretty face, it is about being a transformational leader.

In the final Q&A, at first I thought DR had it, she was very eloquent, however Miss USA just nailed it, very specific, and drawing from her own experience. Thank you, Luis for sharing your thoughts. This is the most fulfilling analysis I have seen this season. I appreciate you for talking about South Africa, Spain and India. And how beautifully you talked about Harnaaz and summarise her entire reign. This is such a pleasant way of giving tribute to the past titleholder, whereas most pageant experts did not care to talk about her at all. Indian queens are calm, sophisticated and exceptionally articulate. When the whole world is ignoring them, they are silently doing their job and making their mark. Divita is an example of that. I completely agree with you on the top 5 and top 3 selection that they all deserved their placements. Congratulations to USA for rightfully claiming the crown by rising above all the controversies mercilessly thrown at her. My Venezuela is such a kind-hearted woman; she showed immense support toward USA after fans started bashing her. What a beautiful woman. Proud!!!! My heart breaks for Celeste but I know she will go on to do amazing things in the future. She is much more than this. I wish from now on, the pageant community becomes more inclusive and start appreciating many other contestants who are doing incredible work throughout the year leading up to the competition, instead of just highlighting the strong sash countries. It is not just about winning the crown but celebrating these amazing WOMEN.

Yoir bias was not free from this at all Luis. Celeste did not deserve a placement in the top 16 based on her prelims performance and she most likely didn't ace her interview either. She was never a dynamic or captivating or even confident speaker and I don't say that to bash her but to be honest. Every other woman that made the cut wowed the judges and had conversations of substance. They all had clear advocacies. While I'm not saying that Celeste doesn't have substance, she wasn't branded or marketed as if she had any. If you go to her page rn, it's nothing but glam shots and photshoots. There's no link to anything that she's passionate about or any work that she really does for her country or community. How unfair of you to expect her to earn a placement that she and her org did not deserve. Secondly to that, the behaviour of the fans and the organisation are why she probably didn't make it also. SEA pagaent fans can be so toxic. Not just to foreign fan bases but to each other as well. The organisation can see all of this. Plus, the behaviour if Celeste's team at show. Walking out of the auditorium after she didn't make the cut was so unbecoming and tacky. It was a poor reflection of her. If the miss u org decides now that they don't wanna place a fil contestant next year because of that bad behaviour, I would understand the decision.

Like you mentioned, especially after the suspension of her national organization, she did most of the preparation herself, going so far as reaching out to designers and designing her own swimsuit cape. She proves that you don't need a whole team to do everything for you in preparation for the pageant, because when you're now the reigning Miss Universe living in New York, you may not always have a whole team behind you. And as you said, she stated precise, tangible examples of how she can influence the Miss Universe Organization. She's a truly inspirational woman and I can't wait to see her reign the Universe!!

Celeste was underwhelming in the preliminaries compared to her preparations over the months, even many of her fans noticed that and assumed maybe it was a strategy to put more effort in Top 16, but everyone was fighting for top 16 spot which she did not, she is to blame for that performance, it was OK, but didnt give it her all, just because Asians love the pageantry and love her and was not placed, we have to assume the standard was changed, and just because biased people put her as their favourite doesnt mean she automatically did well, check most people's top favorites, they placed her in top 5 before the competition, after the preliminary, some placed her outside top 10, or 16, which proves that she wasnt at her best, lets acknowledge that Philippines will not always be placed, and just because she is not placed, it does not make MU a cooking show,

I agree with so much that you said... As South Africans we were so nervous about Ndavi's performance. Something happened during the prelims and she completely didn't look comfortable in the bronze dress. The Top16 announcement was a bit of an upset with so many clearly deserving women being left out. I also agree that Thailand and Philippines being left out of it was totally bonkers and I look forward to your video about that.

Miss Universe organization is not just looking for Beauty and Brains or Smart Talker during Q & A, which is the cliche for most pageants. But in this new era of Miss Universe, they had been telling these contestants that they are looking for " A TRANSFORMMATIONAL LEADER". Someone who is not only beautiful and smart but also have done an impactful advocacy. Not just in words or visions but in Action. She is consistently driving the force for a change in the lives of women as Fashion designer for sustainable environment and teaching women victims of illegal trafficking on how to make a living through sewing. She is passionate of her advocacy not just today but in the long-term transforming the lives of people especially women locally and in the universe. ...and I can't agree more that she is the TOTAL PACKAGE

if MU is looking for beautiful, intelligent women and leaders of their communities and transformations, why didn't they give the crown of Miss Ukraine, which perfectly fits the description and Victoria was not even qualified to the top 16, and they chose a boy who forgot to put a breast on and instead put on a ton of makeup, who cares about clothes?

Thanks for your faith in our girl, Ndavi. I was shocked that people were overlooking her, not because I'm South African, but because she was good! And even during the show, her gown performance was top 3. Despite Philippines and Thailand having longer runs, I heard some people saying they were "over" South Africa placing. I would even go as far as saying black queens still get a raw deal from fans, who struggle to recognize different forms of beauty. (Even in Asia and the Latina countries, most queens are light-skinned, even though light-skinned girls often don't represent the average girl in those places.)

They removed Celeste's narrative ihhh.... They want to be too hands on... too the point that our MU representative is just like a puppet. She lost her spark come prelims.... Same thing with Rab and Bea.... They didn't shine much in their prelims performance. Padrino/Kumpare system ihhhh... whoever the people are close to the people in the org are the ones they give a role in the candidate's journey. It should be about HER journey not the journey of the people surrounding her... it should be about her. Ask her what she wants.... Ask her what narrative she wants to say, That's the problem with Jonas and Shamcey... they were too exclusive. How about the org announce that we need a national costume on social media and the best one would be in the Miss Universe stage. Simple things like that would make a difference.... as there is engagement with the fans. "We have up to this month! So guys help us and we can make our candidate shine. help us design her cape for the MU finals etc etc" There are a lot of designers that are not noticed, that are equally talented or more talented to those people who have an established brand. The support that Celeste had was all organic.... almost all full support for her, because we believed in her. But the MUP organization held her back. Her outfit and performance in the Bragais shoot was even better than in the prelims. It's impossible for Celeste to walk like that and perform like that in the prelims if the org did not instruct her to do so. It is impossible that her Bragais shoot (dress and performance) was better if no one was whispering to her to do this... to do that. Look at R'Bonney's dress and Nat Cos.... That was all her idea.... according to some vloggers it was a one woman show.... she did not receive much help for MIss USA org, that is why she asked for help and she got it. She collaborated with the Filipino designers to make her ideas a reality thus making her win. R'Bonney is amazing and she told her narrative the way she envisioned it from the beginning... I love that R'Bonney represented her Pinoy culture with pride. In my mind, she and Celeste are my Final 2. I love R'Bonney I have been rooting for her since day 1, same with Celeste I have been rooting for her since day 1 as well. But one entered the other fell....Hayyyzzz Couldn't Val Taguba (the Nationals designer who made her dress) be chosen for her prelims dress? But then again we are talking about Jonas Gaffud, the man whose main purpose is make his friends famous at the expense of our MU candidate. Sorry I had to say that, but I guess it is what it is. I hope next time our candidate does something akin to what Cat did... whoever she wants to help her win, that's who she should be with. MUP just for support. This is a wake up call to Shamcey, Voltaire and Jonas.... Don't be too exclusive... I know you want all the credits to go to you guys... that should not be the mindset. Ask for help if needed be. Be more open to people of the Philippines and let our candidate shine that way she won the nationals and I know she (future MUP) and your team will make a mark in pageantry. SORRY FOR THE RANT.... ANYWAY I THANK YOU! CHAROT!

Top 5 are always pre selected after interview n preliminary competition. They always do that. If you see those girls in top 16 they all are well spoken and are doing something for the society. Thailand also doing but she lacks communication skills. Philippines lacks in both departments she is just beautiful model. MU used her for Beauty commercial that's it. MUP always have MU type girls even required as per current criteria but they selected this model. This was their choice and they are responsible for this un placement. Nothing against the girl she did what she could but expecting her to do well in personal interview and Q & A is something beyond her capabilities. I agree about Harnaaz. Her final walk was rushed. If the new MU organization is about 'women empowerment' then they should have let Harnaaz have more interaction. It's like if they were embarrassed by her. OK she gained some weight, like WTF does it matter? Her weight gain was, I guarantee you, due to health issues. People saying she sat in the corner stuffing her face do not know sh*t about what they are talking about. Anyway, I digress, I don't feel they 'empowered" Harnaaz. Quite the opposite. We still love her tremendously. She is a sweetheart. Now onto R'Bonney, I was so in love with Peru, I overlooked R'Bonney which is dumb of me as I'm American LOL. India clearly was a strong speaker and I'm sure she killed it in interview but her stage presence and performance in prelims and finals wasn't strong enough. Even in finals with her new evening gown, it was ill fitting, you could see how much it was gaping in the back and it didn't flatter her body which is very hip dominant. South Africa was a great all rounder but she was just outperformed by super strong girls. Going from 16 to 5 is always going to favour the girls who perform well because they get swimsuit and evening gown rounds to slay it so unless you're one of the best performers chances are you won't make top 5 even if you’re a strong speaker. As for USA winning as a business strategy, that is such a reach. Who comes up with these conspiracy theories? R’bonney deserved this crown and it's sad that people perpetuate such ridiculous allegations to discredit a well deserved win. On to Harnaaz' tribute it was so rushed. She deserved more screen time but it was wasted on that lunatic Ann. How is no one mentioning how horrific her random speech was? It was awful to watch. I was watching with my family and even my mom was cringing. It was like watching a car crash in slow motion. She never needs to be onstage ever again. As for the Asian countries being iced out because of business is ridiculous. Most of the Asian countries that everyone thought would do well weren't actually very good at speaking. Let's be real, Philippines and Thailand were not great speakers compared to these other girls. That's what the Asian countries need to focus more on is how to communicate instead of just having a strong pasarela and nice gowns. Pick up your game Asia and you'll be back on top. Rant over lol.
