A friend of mine was a contestant that year and she said that from Day 1 it was obvious that Miss South Carolina was going to run away with it and that there were even predictions that she was going to win Miss Universe as well (which she did), so the crowning moment surprised nobody - everyone else was competing for the runner up positions. She also said that the girls aren't as sweet as you think. Lots of petty behavior throughout the preliminaries and after the semifinalists were announced there were a number of sore losers angrily crying and saying the nastiest things about some of the contestants who were selected ("how did that fat cow make the semis?!?", LOL). A little trivia: Pamela Rigas, Miss Alabama (not my friend that I'm referring to) went on to compete in Miss America 1984 as Miss Ohio (4th runner up, losing to Vanessa Williams).

I understand your comments. During the crowning, some contestants turned to each other after Alabama was called as if to say a favorite was out. Also, at the final two, AZ acted as if she might win, especially when she was the Photogenic winner.

Tis was a great pageant!! The girls seem prettier each year and the evening gowns more beautiful as the 70’s came to a close. The hair is already starting to get big and it’s only just 1980!! Seeing a 22 year old Donny Osmond( already with a wedding band on his finger) was wonderful. But this would be co host Helen O Connel’s last year with Bob Barker. Always happy and smiling. So sad Helen passed just 13 years later in 1993. God Bless you Helen such a lovely cohost from 1973-1980.

Bob Barker is an excellent host of game shows and even pageants. However, do you think Miss South Carolina could see the results? The way he held the paper, she could easily read it. She was probably so nervous that she didn't; however, she could have. Shawn did so great here and was excellent in winning Miss Universe too. Congrats on a beautiful lady!

This is a really cool video. I've been so fascinated with pageants lately. I did my first pageant a couple of months ago at my school, and it was a really great experience for me. I hope in the future I can compete in more pageants and compete in bigger competitions.

Shawn Weatherly was both a beautiful Miss USA and ultimately Miss Universe 1980 but almost the entire 12 semifinalists were all very pretty young ladies so it’s definitely not just beauty alone that they need to go all the way to winning Miss Universe.

SOME OF THESE GIRLS MOST DEFINITELY WOULD NOT MAKE IT IN ONE OF " THE DONALDS " PAGENTS, BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY UNATTRACTIVE, AND MOST OF THE GIRLS IN PAGENTS NOW DAYS ARE PROFESSIONAL MODELS. Roseycheeks now that you mentioned it, I see the resemblance. I thought Arizona should’ve won but Shawn obviously was very strong and went on to win Miss Universe. 1980 was truly a good year for Miss USA. If only Arizona competed in 1981/1982.

I, too, thought that Jineane was prettier. However, Shawn wasn't a very photogenic person, so was much prettier live on TV than in her still pictures. She was certainly a worthy winner, since she later won an even bigger prize. Jineane was so lucky to finish in second place behind her. :-)

SnFanForever what’s the bigger prize? You mean Miss Universe? Jineane was lucky to inherit the crown but one may argue she was unlucky to meet Shawn as she defeated her for the title. I think had Jineane competed in 1979/1981/1982/1984, she would’ve won. Not sure if she was eligible to compete in 1985, but I find her to be more facially prettier than the winners those years.
