1983 was a very competitive year in the Miss USA pageant. It was one of the strongest in terms of competitors. Any of the top 3 finalists would have made an excellent Miss USA. Plus the production was a lot of fun! I so miss Bob Barker. Not the same without his charm and personality.

Interesting that at Miss USA 1983, Julie Hayek won against the front runner, Lisa Allred of Texas (prelim winner, won semi finals interview and gown). But history repeat itself at Miss Universe 1983 when Julie, a frontrunner at MU. lost the crown to Lorraine Downes.

It's a pretty safe bet that Miss Georgia did not end up doing anything in the medical world considering in her interview @ 28:23 she had no clue what an occupational therapist did. Julie Hayek (the eventual winner), never became a dentist like she had claimed she was studying to become. I wonder how many contestants ever end up becoming what they studied to be.....?

@@lilytsui3015 history repeat itself at MU 1983. Texas was leading the competition the entire time and ended up second when the judges cast their votes. At MU, Julie was leading but the judges settled for New Zealand. Goes to show they can change their minds at the last minute for whatever reason.

Miss Texas had higher scores throughout the pageant and gave a better answer for the final question. I think she should have had a different hairstyle and a different gown because those made her look a bit old so the judges prefered California for her looks.

I hated California's evening gown. Too much cleavage. Texas had the best final answer and should have won. California won because of her looks but she wasn't very impressive with her final answer. I would have ranked the girls this way based on their answers to the final question: 4- South Carolina ...her answer did not have the depth it should have. 3 - California...pageant Patty rehearsed answer. 2 Louisiana - More well thought out on Education than California. 1 runner up - Nirth Dakota ...Very beautiful young lady with a well thought out answer. Winner - Texas...Best answer...anyone who gives God the credit for everything has my vote! The best part of this pageant was Terri Utley's final walk and the crowning of Julie Hayek. She showed extreme class and sportsmanship the way she caressed Julie's cheek in the crowning! Pageant watchers can learn a lot from her!

As always texas overrated and the scored were high in the competition in interview and in general i think was not the best. there were more dinamic and prettiest girl. Texan girl looked old and plain.
