Radahn does seem to have the dutiful first born son energy, Rykard the weird middle child, and Ranni the overindulged youngest, but I would also not be shocked by literally any other order.

I personally think it's the opposite order. Ranni is the perfect, untouchable firstborn child. Not only is she a powerful moon sorceress, she is one of the people that could have replaced Marika and she most likely would be the next ruler of Caria. Rykard is definitely the weird middle child. Smart enough to make some neat sorceries, but literally fed himself to a snake for power. Radahn, I feel, is the neglected youngest child. His perfect older sister was set to be the next god of the lands between and his older brother had struck out on his own and made his own type of sorcery, but Radahn was either uninterested in magic to that degree or simply wasn't as magically gifted as his siblings. And so, he was ignored in favor of them. It would at least explain his lack of overt ties to his mother and siblings and how at least some of his deal is spiting his father (wears his red hair proudly instead of feeling it is shameful, uses the lion imagery of Godfrey). That, or they're fraternal triplets. Honestly, given how many weird births there are in elden ring, a set of triplets wouldn't be surprising.

Rykard's actions could also be explained by him being the eldest and first in line for the throne, until Ranni was born. A proud man suddenly losing his status and station to a younger sibling could definitely inspire rebellion

I love how they carefully chose the verbs "hew" and "felled," which are verbs connoting the cutting of wood. I'm an grad student studying literature, and the careful attention From and the translation team pays to language never fails to make me smile. Some detractors of the souls games are often quick to attack the game for it's writing (or, as they claim, the lack thereof), but careful word choice like this one makes me respect the sparse writing and environmental storytelling in these games above all. One of my favorite parts of playing a new From game is piecing together what has happened in this world, and there are often so many clues in the language itself. I hate the corny exposition dumps most games use to transmit the story to the player. Games like Elden Ring, DS, and even Sekiro truly immerse one in a mythological setting, with all the weirdness that entails, better than any other media I've experienced.

It's a UK based localisation studio called Frognation that have been working with Fromsoft for a long time now (since Demon's souls in 2008)! They're totally underrated and I think more people should know their name. I am very certain that without their talent, these games wouldn't be half as succesful in the west.

It's very good, my only issue is that English has so many synonyms for things which Japanese lacks that at times things can seem disparate. Like in bloodborne we had like 15 cosmic horror terms making them seem like separate things while it was all originally a single thing.

Praetor refers to a man acting in two official capacities: The commander of an army as well as a government official, while General refers solely to the commander of an army. This also seems to align with Rykard being the eldest, as he seems to hold more power and a higher level of responsibility. Love the videos--you could narrate literally anything and I would listen.

I agree on the sibling order but I have a more dramatic interpretation. Rykard is oldest and lived part of his life assuming he would be the heir because he was older than Radahn and there wasn't a daughter yet. When Ranni was born and he lost his status as the heir he rebelled and turned to the snake god. Radahn pursued his dreams of being a warrior because he was never in consideration for being the heir since he is neither the first born nor female. Ranni then slots into the youngest having displaced Rykard and becoming the new heir but despised having a fate pushed upon her and so rebels too.

The idea that the stronger you are, the longer it takes them to respawn could explain how there are still all the shard bearers despite the fact that Vyke somehow was on track to become Elden Lord despite all the shard bearers still living. He must have been imprisoned for so long that the shard bearers were able to respawn, but how they got their great runes back is a mystery

It might also be worth noting that the Fingerslayer Blade in Nokron looks almost exactly like the Sacred Relic sword which the Elden Beast turns Radagon into, only distorted and flaccid. This is just armchair theory, but maybe that’s why there’s no third giant body on the throne in Sellia, or maybe it has other implications as to what it took to forge that fingerslayer blade.

The kanji in "kyoudai (兄妹)" at 24:00 can be read as 兄( Ani - Big Brother) and 妹 (Imouto - Little Sister) separately
@epryn
@epryn Жыл бұрын
Which is important, as kyoudai can also be written 兄弟 which is used more generically as siblings in addition to also meaning "older and younger brothers" There's also 姉弟 for specifically older sister-younger brother combinations (which can still be read as kyoudai, though that's not how it necessarily should be read) So the choice to use 兄妹 does certainly imply that Ranni is younger than at least one of her brothers

I really think Rykard is the oldest child. Rather than acting like a middle child, I think it makes just as much--if not more--sense that Rykard is trying to gain power in this alternative way *because* his claim to the Carian throne has been usurped by the birth of a little sister. Also I love your videos! ^^ Your voice is so soothing and you really put a lot of thought behind your analysis.

This is exactly how I viewed Rykard's actions. A man who once had a claim to the throne and it was taken from him would do anything to have it back. And that fits with Radahn if he never had a chance at the throne he would never have cared about succession or control and focused on what he was good at, magic and fighting.

Doesn't really make sense as rykard works WITH ranni to help her out of the greater wills control and into the puppet body we know. @@kylemclaren617 That's interesting! 👀I interpreted that as a mutual use of each other's skills, since both would have something to gain in that situation and Ranni's already keen on "gaining advantage" from her allies--even the ones she doesn't particularly like (Selevus, lol.) Rykard is even "rewarded" the Blasphemous Claw for his help on the Night of the Black Knives. You could say it's Ranni caring about Rykard's well-being, or that it's payment in exchange for a job well done. I lean towards the latter, since Ranni doesn't extend that same courtesy to Blaidd, or Iji, who she *explicitly* says she loves.

With regard to why Demigods don't revive, there's actually a clearer explanation that fits with why your character revives as well. In a very long video by a fellow calling himself T-L-G-T-W (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXysgZtvfZV3gc0), he explains that in the Lands Between, BELIEF is what creates power. Spells are manifestations of belief, and so is one's ability to revive. So long as they hold true to their convictions, they cannot perish. Such is the nature of the Tarnished as well. And what we see with everyone we kill is that as they die, their beliefs falter and fail, thus, ending them permanently. A few examples: Godrick is defeated, and abandons his desire to progress, instead falling into his delusions of gold; Rennala doesn't die at all because her beliefs are not shaken; when Malenia is defeated, she says she has finally "met her match", and thus gives up; Radahn's mind is already gone, so when he dies, his beliefs die with him; and as a final counter example, Rykard explicitly tells you "a serpent never dies", and sure enough, his head reappears in his boss room, presumably still "alive", though now being consumed by Tanith. With regards to your character, so long as you never give up on your goal to become Elden Lord, you cannot ever perish, and that is why Margit threatens you saying "Put these foolish ambitions to rest." He's trying to break your convictions, and thus cause you to die permanently. But of course, we don't let him! Anyway, love your content, and hope this helps clarify things! All credit to T-L-G-T-W for this insight, and if you all haven't watched his massive video, it's absolutely brimming with great info and is worth your time.

This seems like it's putting the cart before the horse. It's just as easy (easier tbh) to say that it isn't that they're dying because they're giving up hope, they're giving up hope because they're dying. While we don't know all of the details of how death works in the Lands Between, we do know some of them, and this theory is counter to what we actually find in the game.

As for middle child syndrome, I think Rykard has a variant I'll call middle heir syndrome. If he were indeed the eldest, but it's a matriarchy, then he would have been raised as the responsible firstborn, taught to own his actions, etc. only to be replaced by his little sister. Being the elder sibling, and also going from being the apple of my parents' eye to the un-favorite all of a sudden, I'm definitely catching some familiar vibes. Where Ranni definitely shows spoiled youngest traits, Rykard has a bitterness and morbid acceptance about him that an abandoned eldest might have. Radahn, on the other hand, seems like someone who was never first in line to rule, and so was able to choose his own path to a greater degree. He idolized Godfrey and Radagon, and so he became a general, with one item description quoting him saying, "I was born a champion's cub. Now I am the Lord of the Battlefield's lion."

Sibling-wise, I agree that the eldest is either Rykard or Radahn, though I think the rebellion against the Greater Will is less to do with middle-child syndrome and more their anger at their father breaking their mother's heart and returning to the Golden Order, their old enemies. I see them as children of divorce who deeply reject anything to do with their step-family to an extreme extent

In my headcannon, Rykard was firstborn, Ranni the middle child and Radahn the youngling. Ranni is very hard to place since we never see what she truly looked liked and since the shrouds herself in mistery. But I would be confident in putting Rykard above Radahn, Rykard always looked old the in paintings whereas Radahn looks quite young. Additionally, Rykards domain is directly next to the capital, Leyndell, and with his title of Praetor he seems like he must hold a high standing in society. In Rome most praetors started out as generals or high military officials before becoming a praetor, so it makes too much sense to me that Rykard is older than Radahn. The reason I have Ranni as the middle child is because Ranni seemed to be a lot closer to Rykard than to Radahn. Multiple channels talked about the theory that Ranni told Rykard about the night of the black knifes before it happened. Additionally, Radahn actively sabotages Ranni's fate with his influence on the stars with his gravity magic. Rykard on the other hand does not act again Ranni in any shape or form. Them being close does not mean that Radahn is the youngest, but I could see that Rykard and Ranni were born close to each other while Radahn was born considerably later.

I would also say that Radahn being the eldest is also supported by the fanboying over his dad. It speaks to a strong relationship likely facilitated by a lot of time to bond.

I really appreciate the consideration for answering some musings that people have about the Lore. It's only a small reference but it ties into this relationship the game has with multiple cultural mythologies. I know everything about the Regalia of Eochaid already, Eochaid is the name of the King of the Fír Bolg of Irish Mythology. Big guys, but the Ash of War on it and Executioner's Greatsword, I believe is based off of an archaic spear described as a weapon of the Fír Bolg. Its not that they had tips, but the sides were sharp and the blunt tops potentially could have smashed through shields, hence the corkscrew drill effect of Eochaid's Dancing Blade. Its not worth it's own video, from anyone for that matter, but as one example of Irish Mythology that could be interpreted from the game, I wanted to mention it.

I feel like Rykard comes off as the second. IMO, I do not think Elden Ring wanted to imply Praetor in the sense of a military general or commander. I think, they were instead going for the Roman Empire’s use of Praetor, which also had a function of overseeing the “Munera”, or in our view, the gladiatorial combat but eventually moved onto inquisition of criminals and noblemen. This makes sense when considering the duelist all wear serpent emblazoned armor, perhaps these were gladiators originally condemned by Rykard. So here’s my view: Radahn has a lion theme and is the “General” of the game, he represents the great general himself, Julius Caesar (Caelid) with Leonard as Asturcus, Caesar’s human footed horse lol. Now his armor does come from Guts, but it also comes from the myth of Hercules, god of strength and heroes wearing the pelt of the Nemean lion. Hercules also had a bout of madness, and Caesar had a parasite infection, maybe a correlation with Radahns scarlet rot madness. Anywho, I think Radahn represents the Republic period of Ancient Rome. 1st born. Rykard has a serpent theme and is the “Praetor”, he represents the gladiatorial games for a period but moves on to grand inquisitions. Rykard then moves away from this belief system and explores the cult of Eiglay, her winged form representing both Mercury (Divine messenger) and fertility snake god, Glycon. He then abuses his power and title by killing and eating noblemen, knights and anyone else, decimating human population but growing his serpent hybrids. Rykards journey mirrors that of Alexander of Abonoteichus, a Greek oracle that prophesied the coming age of Glycon. It is stated he fixated a human head to a snakes and sat at his throne, he was hated by Christians who deemed him a blasphemous liar and would not offer him communion. This can be viewed as the period of the Roman Empire, 2nd born. Ranni has a witch theme and is a “Princess”, she represents Selene/Luna “the white armed goddess”. Ranni/Rennala/Snowy witch form the triple goddess, Maiden/Mother/Crone and with Ranni having Blaid and gifting us the lone wolf ashes, this represents Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome. However, with the heavy emphasis of witchcraft and the Golden order’s war with Liurnia, and Ranni being the last Princess of her line, it would seem Ranni’s time mirrors that of Empress Maria Komnene, representing the last Byzantine Empress of Eastern Rome (Constantinople), the last Born. I may be wrong, but I’m not trying to change anyones head cannon or debate, just offering up my thoughts on it all, 🍻 did not expect to research so much and write so little, cheers 🥂

One thing to note is that Radahn looked up to Godfrey more than Radagon, which depending on when in the timeline he started to look up to him it could be a sign of rebellion towards Radagon. Great video as always and good luck on your journey as well!

5:08 Also, the Two Fingers say that "the Greater Will has long renounced the demigods", which might imply that the Grace that would normally keep the demigods alive is no longer with them. There's also the fact that Grace will leave you once your purpose is achieved. Which explains how Godfrey and Morgott die, despite having grace. As Varré says: "It shows the path that you are meant to follow, even if It leads to your grave."

This is about the Roundtable Hold but relates to the Fingerslayer Blade. To continue your theory of the use of the Fingerslayer Blade, I can only guess that it was used to eliminate the Two Fingers in the Roundtable Hold in Leyndell, where we can find Raging Wolf Vargram & Errant Sorcerer Wilhelm, which is why, further, that Roundtable Hold isn't operational anymore. Consequently, then, the new Roundtable Hold is not as lively, because most Tarnished refused to move or, like Istvan or Tragoth, enjoy grass more. The old Roundtable Hold still has visitors, except that there's no more Two Fingers reside within.

No idea how I've never found your channel till now with how long and how deep into the souls community I am, but I absolutely love it! Binged the whole thing in 2 days haha. I was wondering if you had any interest in ever covering lore from the older souls games, I'm not sure if this was your first souls game or just the one you decided to start covering but I wouldn't let them being older and already covered scare you away from talking about them. I've already seen vaati and plenty others cover the things in elden ring you have too and I still love the passion and personality you brought to it in your own unique way as well! : ) Plus so many good cosplay opportunities we'd miss out on haha

"In Marika's own words. Hear me, Demigods. My children beloved. Make of thyselves that which ye desire. Be it a Lord. Be it a God. But should ye fail to become aught at all, ye will be forsaken. Amounting only to sacrifices." This directly backs up your remembrance point. Her useless demigod kids are killed and stored for later use. This is before the shattering

You add the most interesting and unique perspectives to the game and the Souls series that many don’t, when you mentioned about how much time actually passes by when our character dies in game and comes back. You’re right, it can be a very long time and we just don’t realize it. A very unique point with Master Hewg

In regards to the siblings positions I think it’s Radahn, Ranni, then Rykard. My main reason is because Rykard knew that he would never have a chance at getting at the throne, and that’s why he went to the serpent so he could potentially overthrow everybody and secure his own rulership. Radahn was first born and a prodigy in Magic and war and was almost guaranteed until his sister was born so that’s why we find him actively using a lot more magic that his sister does. And he knew that her fate was tied to the stars, so that is part of the reason why he held back all the stars, because if he held it back, then she would not be able to live her fate as truly intended originally, and then that would’ve given him an opportunity for the throne which would’ve been his originally.
