I finally got around to building a C&C cage for my piggies last week, following your general pattern, and my two girls loved it. The sad part for me is that I lost my Iris today. Iris was an all silver, red eyed Abbyssinian, and she just recently turned six years old. Iris, Sept. 29, 2007 to Nov. 1, 2013. R.I.P. little buddy.

I have never had any issues, I always wipe down the washing machine afterwards and it doesn't hurt to run an empty load before using it for your own clothing.

Hey don't know if you know this but just a suggestion. If you get that crusty urine stains before you put them in the washer just squeeze a little vinegar on the stain. Gets rid of it every time.

I found putting the puppy pads under the fleece is much better than towels or more fleece. They are disposable/cheap and over-all more convenient. Pee never seeps though because the pads are lines with plastic under but absorbs a lot! Just make sure it's not stinking out, lol :P Just my 2 cents :D

Before my rant :) ... I am now addicted to buying cute fleece. I was buying at Ross, but now the Goodwill fleece baby blankets & fleece remnants from craft store. :) IMPORTANT misconception about FLEECE. I have to pre-rinse out everything in the sink about a dozen times each, w/ detergent, before washing only pig stuff together & still 2-3 rinses! It's exhausting & wastes h2o. But I cannot even imagine how anything would get clean in a washing machine. The musty pee smell as I pre-wash, is slightly gross, but not 1/10th as bad as the Syrian hamster pee! (Never again!) And my 2 pigs use their litter box a lot, but just not enough. FYI, I buy the $10 huge bag of rolled newspaper for their litter boxes. It is wise to surround their cage or at least 3 corners w/ litter trays. Then the food dish in the 4th corner. Four mos. of this at 41 w/ 3 kids & 2 dogs & IDK how or why I keep going. G.pig cuteness motivates me I guess. I had gp as a child. Been a + experience for my kids. Def. teaching them how to really care for a pet. So much more difficult than dogs or cats. I follow thru w/ pet ownership, unlike many. DO NOT be careless & let more gpig babies into this world. So please everyone, do your research before you adopt! (From a shelter!) :)

well she said you dont have to use soap you can just use water but you need to wash it 3-4 times to get it worn some so it will absorb better :)

I use baking soda and vinegar when I wash my fleece it kills the smell and is safe for guinea pigs because it has no odor and after I fill the washing machine with water and Clorox to clean the machine out to prepare my clothes after it's stops sometimes I wash my fleece twice before putting it in the dryer

@joelycurtis Hmmm...my fleece also get hair in it too but i find that when I sweep off the fleece it also takes off some of the fur. At the end of the week when it is time to wash all of my fleece I shake everything off outside (this gets some hair off) then wash it and put it in a dryer with some anti static dryer sheets. By the time they come out most of the fur is off (just be sure to empty your lint collector). the best quick solution though is probably just to try sweeping or shaking it off

@guineapigsareawsome If oyu find you are getting a lot of fur in your washer try washing your fleece inside a pillow case or washer bag. I find that most of the fur is removed off my fleece once it has gone through the dryer :)

Someone might've mentioned this to you, but vinegar and ethanol are the best ways to get out urine. Especially cat urine. Vinegar chemically bonds with the calcium in urine to remove it, ethanol (really any alcohol, vodka, rubbing alcohol...) acts as a solvent to remove the ammonia. Many things don't like to dissolve in water, and soap sometimes isn't enough. (I can't remember the exact chemistry of soap atm to explain). Hot water can actually set stains, by bonding the proteins together (Like cooking a steak), so cold water soaks only. Besides cold water is more environmentally friendly.

Try washing it with A Small bit of Vanish Hygiene, it makes it much cleaner and gets rid of smells. :) doesn't harm piggy's neither.

I used to use fleece and a towel. But, now I use bedding all over because she refuses to go to one corner to a litter box. It is easier for me to use a cage liner and just lift it all out twice a week. And she enjoys kicking bedding everywhere. She popcorns and runs more with the bedding than she did with fleece. I think it depends on their likes and personality. But, you are a great piggy mom!
